Act 1 Chapter 13
Stretched out his hand to catch some rainwater flowing down from the tree, and with one mouthful, he had already sucked the rainwater into his mouth. "Ptoo" He immediately spat it out again. The tree was so dirty, the rainwater was filled with all sorts of strange smells. Resigned, he pursed his dry, cracked lips, and then retreated deeper into the temporary hiding hole in the tree to avoid the heavy rain that had been falling for two days.
The enemy was still searching for themselves when the rain started, but as the rain got heavier, they stopped searching too. However, the heavy rain also made it impossible for them to advance or retreat, and they could only shrink into this tree hole.
"When the mountain bear sees me again, it will definitely give me a punch." As he spoke, his hands didn't stop moving. He casually tore off the gauze wrapped around his arm, only to find that it had stuck to the flesh. He didn't care, and forcibly ripped off the gauze, taking a large piece of skin with it. Looking down, he saw that the wound had become infected, with yellowish pus slowly dripping out. From his shirt pocket, he took out the last of the anti-inflammatory powder, gritting his teeth against the searing pain, and poured it all over the wound. Then, using the same gauze, he re-bandaged the wound. As he looked outside at the increasingly heavy rain, his mind began to recall events after finding the radio on the enemy's body.
"Although I dislike you, woman, it's our duty to protect you. As long as we don't die, we can take you out of here. Put on this and wear that." While speaking, he had already taken off his bulletproof vest under the puzzled gaze of Shan Xiong and handed it over to the woman. After a moment's thought, he also took off his helmet and threw it at her.
"Falcon, what are you doing? Want to die?"
"Look at that woman getting dressed quickly, the bulletproof vest I threw to her, wearing my own helmet. 'Mountain bear, I know what you want to say, but we are soldiers, our duty is to obey orders, in front of orders, I can even sacrifice myself, let alone personal preferences?'"
However
"Let's go, we'll contact headquarters while walking, and a plane will come to pick us up soon." He interrupted the mountain bear who wanted to say something again, put on the radio, helped him up, and walked forward. We came here before, and the pickup point agreed with the plane is just ahead. There is a large open space there, enough for the plane to land.
"But I'm so tired, can't we rest for a bit?" The woman had already forgotten about the pursuing soldiers behind them and the warm corpses on the ground, her mind only thinking of resting. "Spoiled rotten."
"Ma'am, the gunshot earlier has already drawn attention. Since they haven't arrived yet, it means they're still some distance away from here. However, we've already wasted too much time. Before long, they'll be arriving. What they'll want then won't be us alive, but our corpses."
"I don't care, I'm just tired. The order is for you to protect me, but it also says that you have to listen to my orders. Now, I'm ordering you, find a place and let me rest for a bit. And, you can call me Miss Gao, not 'woman'."
He didn't say a word, but instead helped the mountain bear continue walking forward. The corner of his eye could see that the mountain bear glanced in the direction of the woman, but he didn't hear him speak. 'Probably a disdainful look.'
"Wait for me, wait for me." I hadn't gone far with the mountain bear when that woman's shout came, not an ordinary trouble.
"Stop right there." She ran up in front of me, her hand pressed against my chest, forcing herself to stop.
"Say."
"I'm hungry, I want to eat."
"Heavens, she just threw up and still can eat?"
"When I was about to set off and wanted to bring dry rations, you said hunting is good, so I only brought food for me and the mountain bear, but we've already finished eating it. So, woman, if you want to eat, let's head back to headquarters later." After saying this, he didn't pay attention to her standing beside him, but instead continued to support the mountain bear as they moved forward. It was quite strange that the mountain bear didn't say a word this time.
By afternoon, it had started raining lightly in the sky, although not heavily, but enough to make people slip.
"Oh no, it hurts." Hearing the cry of surprise from behind her, she stopped in her tracks, turned around, and saw that the woman had sat down on the ground.
"Get up and keep going."
"It seems like someone's foot is twisted and can't get up."
Look over there, our destination is just within sight. If this woman doesn't cause any trouble, we'll arrive in half an hour. But, alas...
"So what do you want?"
"Carry me on your back."
"Ka-chak! The mountain bear cocked the rifle again. "Damn, I've tolerated you for a long time. If it weren't for the peregrine falcon, I would have killed you a long time ago. Why bother with this trouble."
She looked at the one sitting on the ground, no longer having any fear, with a provocative gaze at the mountain bear, just as the mountain bear was about to fire under her gaze. But she reached out and pressed down the mountain bear's gun, "Don't shoot here, it will attract the enemy again, they haven't given up searching."
"Kestrel, don't stop me. Without this burden, we would have left here long ago. At the very least, I can still find a scapegoat. Now, it's all over."
"Fire away!"
"Shut up, woman." He could only voice his disapproval of their unproductive quarrel.
"Why don't you tell that bear to shut up."
"Damn it, I can't hold back anymore. At worst, I'll just go back to the military court." Ping! The sound of Shan Xiong's gunshot echoed far away, and the enemy must have also heard it. Looking over at that woman, she was very lucky. Just as Shan Xiong fired his gun, his own hand had already pressed down on the muzzle, and the bullet hit a spot right in front of her, very close, very close.
He shot the bear a resentful glance, walked up to the woman, squatted down, and looked into her eyes until the defiance in them turned to fear. "Woman, I'll carry you, but I want you to know that you're just part of the mission. We have a responsibility to keep you safe, but not to be your lapdog." Without looking at her again, he turned his back on her and hoisted her onto it, one hand reaching for the radio lying nearby.
"Let's go, Shan Xiong." I walked to Shan Xiong's side and supported him with my other hand. I didn't say anything else, but he already understood what I meant from the apologetic look in my eyes.
"Contact has been made, in 20 minutes the plane will arrive and it will help our artillery brothers to guide them directly to bomb that base flat." After contacting the plane, he walked behind a large rock where the panting mountain bear was leaning against, along with her who was said to have twisted her ankle.
"Brother, it's my fault for being useless and causing you trouble." The person who spoke these words then heard the apologetic voice of the mountain bear, but she didn't say anything, just stared at me with her eyes, I don't know what meaning was conveyed in her gaze.
"Stop talking and take a good rest, the plane will be here soon." With that said, I leaned against the stone and closed my eyes. Just now, I carried one person and supported another, and it took me an hour to walk what should have been a half-hour journey, I'm exhausted.
Bang! At the sound, he immediately opened his eyes to see her helmet, which she had casually thrown onto a rock, had been shot off to one side by a bullet. "Sniper!!" He instantly recalled the alarm and grabbed Mountain Bear, who was about to rush out. "Leave this to me, you deal with the others later. We have 5 minutes before the plane arrives."
He stuck himself to the ground, carefully crawling behind another rock, recalling the direction of the gunshot from earlier. "Should be at my 6 o'clock position." He cautiously poked his head out, then quickly pulled it back as a bullet hit the rock with a loud crash. "Close call!" As he thought this, he swiftly pulled out a red smoke bomb used for guiding planes to land. He pulled the pin and casually tossed it at his feet. As the smoke enveloped him, he held his breath and sprinted to another rock, using the fastest speed possible. Just then, a gentle breeze blew in, dispersing the smoke away from his position and towards another direction. He lightly threw a stone over, creating a slight ripple in the smoke, and immediately heard gunfire. "Still that direction, this idiot doesn't know to change positions!" As he lured the fool into exposing himself again by firing, he swiftly opened the bolt of his sniper rifle, loading a bullet as he quickly positioned the gun through a gap in the rocks. Through the 16x scope, he could clearly see a green figure in his crosshairs. "Does this idiot think we're easy to bully?" As he thought this, the bullet hit the man's chest, and from the scope, he could clearly see a massive blood hole appear on his chest, almost tearing him in two. Without confirming the target again, he swiftly ran towards Mountain Bear, just as a black dot appeared in the distance, flying towards them.
"Mountain bear, when the plane comes over, it will still take about two minutes, but the red smoke has already become our biggest signpost. The plane can see it, and so can the enemy."
"I'll go and lure the enemy away."
"No need, I'll go."
"Why?"
"I already have Ou Yang, you still don't have anything."
"This is an excuse? Don't argue with me, brother."
Bang! Without any warning, a shot hit the side of the mountain bear's head. Watching it slowly collapse, he immediately met the woman's puzzled gaze.
"Listen, woman, what I'm about to say is important, so please remember it. I'll only say it once. When Mountain Bear wakes up, tell him that since the enemy's sniper has appeared, it means the others will be arriving soon, and I need to go lure them away."
She nodded, and he casually pulled off his ID tag, but accidentally touched the fragment of a dagger, which was Ouyang's good luck charm. After thinking for a moment, he also pulled that down and handed it to the woman.
"When Mountain Bear wakes up, give these to him. Have him hold onto my ID tag for now; if I don't come back, help me turn it in. As for this dagger fragment, Mountain Bear knows its significance. Just tell him that if I'm gone, he should carry it with him, and Ouyang and I will watch over him together, letting him live a good life in our place."
you
"Don't interrupt me, I know you hate Shan Xiong, and I also know you have connections that can make him die unjustly. But you should know, he's a straightforward person, always says what he thinks, and when you get back, think about your behavior over the past few days, then you'll understand why he's like this. Consider it as my request to you, Wang Kun, don't do anything that will harm him, he's my only brother, thank you."
She didn't say a word, just nodded and turned around, without looking at her eyes, and ran towards the distant woods.
BOOM! As soon as I entered the jungle, I saw an enemy rushing towards me in a hurry. I didn't even have time to aim, so I directly put my sniper rifle against my waist and fired a shot at him. The high-energy bullet broke through a small tree on its flight path and then broke one of the enemy's legs. I knew she must have heard the sound here, so I glanced in the direction of the mountain bear. With a smooth motion, I slung my sniper rifle over my back, drew out my shotgun, walked over to the guy who was crying out in pain on the ground, and shot him in the head with one bullet. "Is this what special forces are like???" I wondered to myself as I ran deeper into the jungle.
Not far from running, I saw a big tree in front of me. "Let's cover the mountain bears and leave here." I had already climbed up the tree, opened my sniper rifle, and said this to myself. The other enemies will arrive soon, and we must cover until the plane takes off, otherwise it will be shot down, and I don't know if they have brought individual air defense weapons.
