Volume 1 Sudden Battlefield Chapter 41
"Is the northeast direction the artillery camp?"
When I heard Lian Chang say this, I couldn't help but feel dizzy for a moment.
I fainted because I couldn't believe that after fighting for so long, the company commander still didn't know that the Vietnamese were attacking the artillery camp.
We, as soldiers, don't know about that either, isn't that normal for soldiers? We eat our fill and sleep, receive tasks and complete them, encounter enemies and kill them... What deployment, what plans, we have no idea. Isn't that right? When the artillery regiment arrived at our army's flank, we didn't even know.
It wasn't until later that I found out this artillery battalion had just arrived in Laojie for less than two hours.
So we soldiers didn't know whether the Vietnamese army was attacking our artillery camp or if it was just normal.
However, Lian Zhang was different, he knew more information and deployments than we did.
For example, just now, listening to Lian Chang's tone, he obviously knew that the northeast direction was the artillery camp, but he pretended not to know which direction the Vietnamese army's main attack was in. Even when I explicitly reminded him that the gunfire in the northeast direction was more intense, he still didn't react. It wasn't until I asked that overly straightforward question... that he realized the focus of this battle!
From this point on, Lian Chang's overall view is not ordinary! He seems to only know how to deal with the Vietnamese army in front of him, only knows simple and mechanical killing of enemies, but does not analyze the situation of the entire battlefield, and naturally does not know that the Vietnamese army in front of us actually just wants to block us from reinforcing...
Just as I was about to sigh, Lian Zhang yelled out loudly: "First row! Charge forward for me..."
"What?" I was taken aback by his words, rushing over in this situation?
The row of men obviously also had doubts about this order, or perhaps it was because the gunfire was too loud and they didn't hear the command...
However, Lian Chang waved his pistol again and ordered: "What are you still dazing about? The Japanese devils are attacking our artillery camp, rush through the enemy's firepower network to reinforce immediately!"
"Yes!" Under the long sigh, after replacing the magazine of the submachine gun in his hand with a new one, he gritted his teeth and shouted loudly: "Comrades! For the motherland, for victory, charge!"
"Charge!"
……
It really went like that... I watched in disbelief as the soldiers carrying guns rushed towards the Vietnamese army's gunfire on the open ground.
Machine guns rang out, bullets poured down on the soldiers like raindrops, blood flowers bloomed, one by one the soldiers fell, and pools of blood splashed out...
I was stunned by this miserable scene, but I was only stunned for a moment.
This is my chance, a chance to turn defeat into victory, and also a chance to survive.
Why is it said to be an opportunity to live?
The troops who were called up by Lian Chang are a row, and when one row is done, whose turn will it be?
Of course it's second-rate, I'm just second-rate!
So if you want to save your life, hurry up and leave before the commander gives the order! Otherwise, a row of soldiers will be my model.
Besides, I believe that at this moment even the Vietnamese machine gunner staring in my direction was busy firing at the charging Liberation Army soldiers, and if we didn't leave now, there would be no more opportunities.
I crouched down and slipped out from behind the small mound, after which I only heard Commander Lian's curses, but I just pretended not to hear.
As I passed by those soldiers under me, I shouted at them: "All of you are here, follow me!"
"Yes!" Most of them responded to my command, except for a few frightened new recruits, and among them was actually that Shen Guoxin who claimed to be a hero...
My heart was racing, I saw the row of soldiers charging forward were about to be wiped out, and the enemy's firepower would sweep towards us again. So I shouted at those stunned new recruits: "If you want to survive, follow me!"
"Yes!" This time those new recruits reacted, each and every one of them hastily gathering their rifles and following along.
I also came to mind and no longer care about them, I spread my legs and ran towards the left wing of the residential house at a speed of 100 meters.
There is no doubt that staying in the open would be suicidal and the only way to survive was to take cover in a civilian house.
Moreover, I knew that the Vietnamese army should have sent a few people to occupy these houses, leaving us with only one way to retreat back to the school buildings. In that case, there would be a several hundred meters wide open area between us and the Vietnamese army, making it even more impossible for us to break through their firepower blockade.
But it's very clear that Yue's army didn't make sufficient preparations.
As for why the Viet Minh didn't make good preparations... no need to think much, it's definitely because that unexpected gunshot from the little thief triggered the battle too early.
So we still have a chance, and also the opportunity to break through the Vietnamese army's defense line to reinforce the artillery battalion.
To be honest, I really don't want to do this... Looking at all these guns and cannons everywhere, I involuntarily have an urge to run as far as I can. But although I'm timid, I'm not stupid... If the few of us soldiers ran away, while the other warriors sacrificed themselves on the battlefield, what would happen to us?
So if you want to survive, there is only one way out, and that is to desert. If you don't desert, you will die under the commander's reckless orders. But the purpose of deserting is to break through the enemy's defenses, to kill the enemy more effectively... In that case, no one would say we are deserters!
The civilian house was just a few hundred meters away from us, and in our frantic rush, we arrived in no more than a few minutes. When I reached the door, I didn't dare to linger, and with a loud "bang", I kicked it open and rushed inside.
As I went in, I was stunned to run into a Viet Cong soldier who had also rushed in. He was clearly trying to seize the high ground, and neither of us expected to encounter each other like this. After a brief moment of shock, both of us raised our guns almost simultaneously, and the shots rang out at almost the same time. However, it was the Viet Cong soldier who fell, while I didn't even get a scratch...
The reason is that I remember an old man's words.
At that time he told me: "If you accidentally encounter the enemy, when raising your gun, never shoot at the head, but rather at the belly!"
I asked foolishly: "Why?"
The old man didn't say much and punched me hard in the stomach, I let out a miserable cry and my whole body curled up like a shrimp.
"Do you know why now?" the old man asked.
I didn't have the strength to respond, I could only nod weakly. Actually, I didn't know anything at that time, all I knew was that I hated the old man to the bone. I was only 15 years old, did he need to hit me with such a ruthless punch? Did he think I was his son?
It's a good thing that punch hurt so much that it left a deep impression on me, so now I can instinctively aim at the enemy's stomach and pull the trigger.
It wasn't until then that I truly knew the answer to the question...
At this distance, both parties almost simultaneously raised their guns. No matter what, it was impossible to stop the other from firing. Even if my bullet hit the opponent's vitals first, they would still fire due to muscle spasms before dying.
In this case, usually two die together, but there is one exception, that is, hitting the belly.
Firstly, hitting the belly will be half a beat faster than the opponent. Secondly, hitting the belly will make the opponent's body arch like a shrimp, and as his body arches... the bullet will also follow and shoot towards the ground under my feet.
Just as I was secretly rejoicing at having escaped, another Vietnamese soldier suddenly appeared... Before I could react, a black shadow flashed by and this Vietnamese soldier's throat had already been cut open. He clutched his throat with both hands in agony, seemingly trying to stop the continuous gushing of blood, but he was powerless to do so, only letting out a series of faint, chicken-like "gurgling" sounds as he slowly knelt down, then fell to the ground and convulsed several times before finally lying still.
We were all shocked by the miserable death of this North Vietnamese soldier, and I'm no exception, even though I've been through battles with bayonets and seen enemies die in front of me, but never have I seen an enemy die in such a slow and painful way...
Take another look at the person who took action, it was Chen Yiyuan, she held a military dagger with blood on her hand, just like an ordinary person, calm and peaceful, but made the soldiers' hearts skip a beat.
I don't know what others think, but at that time, a thought suddenly popped up in my mind: What if I married this woman and got hurt? One day, we had a fight and she was angry with me, would she also do the same to my neck...
"Class Monitor!" Chen Yiyiy pulled me out of my daze: "What should we do now?"
"Hmm!" I thought for a moment and asked Chen Yiy: "Are you familiar with this terrain?"
"Familiar!" Chen Yiyiy nodded without hesitation: "Having lived here for five years, I know it like the back of my hand!"
"Very well!" I said: "Immediately lead us to attack the flank of the Vietnamese ghosts, and coordinate with the main force to encircle them!"
I say this because I am very clear that the regimental commander who has already lost his composure will continue to command his troops to attack, so our attack on the Vietnamese army's flank is undoubtedly a pincer movement against the Vietnamese army.
"Yes!" Chen Yiyiyang responded with a voice and held her gun in front of her, leading the way.
But then something went wrong, Wang Kechang looked at the two corpses on the ground and suddenly burst into tears: "I don't want to go, I don't want to die... I, I don't want to be a soldier anymore, I don't want to redeem my crime! I want to go back to the juvenile detention center..."
Wang Kechang's crying quickly spread and several new recruits including Li Zhaolong showed fear in their eyes.
"Monitor!" Shen Guoxin said with some difficulty: "You say... we all nine deaths and one life, it's not easy to escape here, why do you still want to go up?"
"Right! Monitor...". Xu Guochun had already thought of an excuse, he suggested: "Let's just stay here, we've killed two Vietcong devils, haven't we? After the battle is over... let's carry the bodies out..."
"Shut up!" To be honest, Xu Guochun's suggestion was quite tempting. After all, having a corpse could prove that we were fighting the enemy and not deserting, right?
But I knew that the two bodies of the enemy were far from enough... Now, those who are charging in the open space may be our second squad. If we don't attack, the first and second squads will all be sacrificed, leaving only my class still full, except for the two enemy corpses, not even a single hair of our own people is missing... Who would believe this if I said it?
What's more important is that thinking of the scars they got from bleeding and sacrificing outside, while we're in here thinking about how to save our lives, it just doesn't feel right.
I pointed the gun in my hand at those new recruits and said, "You can stay here, but don't say I'm Yang Xuefeng's soldier from now on! I won't be responsible for your life or death either!"
They turned and left without saying anything else.
