Chapter 42

  Chapter 42

Some readers think that this book is similar to the second half of "Decisive Battle in Korea", so I'd like to clarify: first, the concept is different; second, "Decisive Battle" entered Vietnam from Guangxi, while this book enters Vietnam from Yunnan. Moreover, it's basically based on real battles with some reasonable additions, such as the previous underground fortress of Laojie. If you feel a sense of déjà vu, that's normal, after all, it's written by the same person, with similar writing style and military descriptions, and even depicts the same army in the same battle. However, there shouldn't be any identical plot, because soldiers themselves don't like repetitive plots either.

Li Zuo Long indeed was a unique individual, his eyebrows didn't even furrow as he followed the troops forward. Wang Ke Chang and several others fell behind.

In fact, I also knew they would follow up, not for anything else, just for the second half of that sentence I said... "I won't be responsible for your life and death either!"

To put it bluntly, this is to intimidate them. Think about it, on this battlefield, there isn't a single inch of land that can be said to be truly safe. Just now, didn't two Viet Cong appear in that house one after another? The question then arises, if two more Viet Cong were to come... could these new recruits handle it?

So they all counted together... perhaps it's still safer to follow the class leader. Hiding in that house, if one is not careful, may be caught by the devils, and even if they are lucky enough to escape this battle, after the war, they will be treated as deserters. They were not stupid, of course, they knew how to choose.

At this time, I didn't have the extra energy to pay attention to them. In fact, I would rather they not follow us. The reason is simple: now they are a burden and an encumbrance to us, and to some extent, I still need to protect their safety...

But at the same time, I didn't have that much time to think about it, all I knew was to lead my troops and follow Chen Yiyang, advancing cautiously towards the dense machine gun fire.

What surprised me was that Chen Yiyang looked like a well-trained soldier, not just because she had helped me crush the Vietnamese army's breakthrough earlier, nor just because she had just calmly killed a Vietnamese soldier at close range, but also because now she could find cover in time and kept gesturing to us behind her back, indicating whether we should move forward or stop.

From this, I feel more and more that she is not simple. It can be said that now this class is not under my command, but rather she is in command.

But this seems nothing strange, just like what Chen Yiyang said, an ordinary Vietnamese civilian can shoot and kill people, let alone her who has been in the Vietnamese army for so many years.

This made me secretly shocked in my heart, if all of Yue's army were like Chen Yiyis quality... then this battle would be hard to fight!

"Class Monitor!" Just then, Chen Yiyiy, who was walking ahead of me, turned around and called out to me, pointing at the top of my head.

I looked up and quickly understood what she meant, it was a three-story wooden house with a simple wooden ladder nailed to the corner of the wall for people to climb to the roof, you could say it's a great sniping spot. Chen Yiyang is letting me snipe here...

I nodded immediately and turned around to give orders to the soldiers behind me: "Everyone, follow the clothes and advance, when I'm not here, listen to the clothes' command!"

"Yes!" Although the soldiers under his command were somewhat surprised, they still followed Chen Yiyi and continued to advance.

Looking at Wang Kechang walking in the back with a trembling body, I couldn't help but feel pity for him. I shouted to him: "Thief, come with me!"

"Hmm... okay!" Wang Kechang sniffled, his eyes showing a grateful expression. It was clear that with his quick wit, he knew I was taking care of him and protecting him.

Without saying much more, I exchanged a glance with Chen Yiyuan, then slung my rifle over my back and followed Wang Kechang up the wooden ladder to the rooftop.

This is a "human"-shaped tile-roofed house, the ridge of which provides me with a very free and spacious sniping position. If I followed the superior's order to "cherish every blade of grass and tree in Vietnam", I might have to be careful not to crush those tiles, but I don't care about that at all, "squeak" a few times and found a position to lie down, sticking out my head for a look...

Hey, Chen Yiyang really knows how to find a location. In front of me is a Vietnamese civilian's drying field, with an open view and good visibility. More importantly, from here I can clearly see the enemy's position and through doors, windows or collapsed wall holes, I can see Chen Yiyang and their marching route.

It can be seen that they are also able to provide remote cover for them. I think Chen Yiyang also arranged me here for this reason.

However, in order not to expose Chen Yiy and his party, I could see the enemy but endured without firing.

Suddenly, I think Chen Yiyuan is more than capable of commanding a company, let alone a platoon. At the very least, she's much more reliable than our regiment commander.

"Monitor!" Wang Kechang leaned over beside me and asked cautiously: "What am I supposed to do?"

"Huh!" I was taken aback, originally calling him up just to give him a safe place, now I really don't know what to do with him.

"Alright!" I thought for a moment and then pointed to the route of Chen Yiyang's troops, saying to him: "See our troops? Don't shoot, just watch. If you see any danger, report the location and situation, got it?"

"Is that it?" Wang Kechang nodded and said: "Understood!"

"Really understood?" I was a bit skeptical, because reporting directions and positions, such as the location of a few o'clock, how many meters away... isn't something that ordinary people can quickly and accurately say.

I know this... completely because of the old man.

The old man's eyes are blind, aren't they? And his temper is as stubborn as a cow. When it comes to taking things or eating, he never wants others to help him. I don't know if he's nostalgic for the days when he was in the army or what, but he insists on teaching me how to read directions.

"Six o'clock direction, five meters, dinner table!"

"Eight o'clock direction, two meters, washbasin!"

  ……

At first, I often reported inaccurately and would usually get a few slaps on the face. After a long time, it naturally became familiar, and after several months, I could even report the accurate direction without looking.

Look, my father and I have always lived like this. I'm like a commander, telling him the direction to let him take care of himself, and he seems to like it too, at least this way he won't feel useless. And I'm happy not to have to lift a hand in leisure.

"I really understand now!" Wang Kechang nodded his head very affirmatively.

  "Give it a try!"

Wang Kechang poked his head out and took a look, saying: "Twelve o'clock direction, two hundred meters, well!"

"Hmm!" I unexpectedly glanced at Wang Kechang, it seems that this time I really called the right person.

I didn't know that Wang Kechang had a reason for this set, was he a pickpocket? As a pickpocket, he often needs to spot targets on the street, but spotting targets can't be done by pointing... That's easy to arouse the target's vigilance, so under his head training, he practiced reporting directions.

At least it can still serve some purpose by reporting directions.

In fact, I don't dare to have too much hope for Wang Kechang.

A sniper is an assistant, the main reason being that a sniper needs to stare at the scope, the scope is magnifying a small area... Although this place can be seen carefully, it also means that the observation range is too small and cannot take care of the overall situation. This is also why modern snipers are often equipped with an observer.

However, most of these observers are equipped with binoculars. I don't believe Wang Kechang can play any role without a pair of binoculars.

So up until then I still planned to play singles alone. However, soon I found out that this idea was wrong.

Just as I was aiming at a Vietnamese machine gunner, waiting to launch an attack with Chen Yiyidan and others, Wang Kechang suddenly blurted out: "Ten o'clock direction, 500 meters, Vietnamese trap!"

Along the direction indicated by Wang Kechang, it's really... Two North Vietnamese soldiers can be clearly seen peeking out from behind a wall corner through the sight, obviously they have discovered our army's flanking maneuver... They should have discovered it, after all, with the military quality of the North Vietnamese Army, how could they be so easily ambushed?

I couldn't help but feel a little surprised, I didn't think Wang Kechang's eyesight was actually not bad... What I didn't expect was that this thief's eyesight and observation skills would be poor, shouldn't this be their specialty?

At the same time, he was secretly shocked, and if Wang Kechang hadn't reminded him, what happened next wouldn't be hard to imagine.

Chen Yiyuan and others were completely unaware that they had already been discovered by the Vietnamese army, and continued to move towards the Vietnamese army's position along the original route. The Vietnamese army would use their usual tactics, quietly letting them pass, and then suddenly appearing behind Chen Yiyuan and others for a sweep...

Of course, now that they've let me discover this, their scheme can't succeed.

I aimed the sight at a point about half a man's height from the corner of the wall, waiting quietly, just waiting for the enemy to stick out half his head again and then I would hold my breath and pull the trigger...

A loud "bang" was heard, and then a patch of red and white murky substance was left in the corner of the wall.

At the same time, the gunshot was also a warning to Chen Yiy and others. They stopped in their tracks at the first moment and locked their gun barrels on the wall corner.

"Rat-a-tat-tat..." The ones firing the guns were a few new recruits. New recruits have one characteristic: as soon as they get startled, they fire their guns to boost their courage, even if they clearly know that the bullets can't hit the enemy hiding around the corner behind the wall.

Another North Vietnamese soldier was apparently pinned down by that one shot and refused to stick his head out again, and I couldn't do anything about it.

But I couldn't doesn't mean others can't, yet Chen Yiyiy suddenly darted out of the bunker, quickly threw a hand grenade and then lay on the ground.

"Boom!" Before the explosion had even faded away, Chen Yiyang got up from the ground again, holding her submachine gun and charging into the smoke. Then all that could be heard was "Rat-a-tat-tat..." followed by silence. The next second, Chen Yiyang emerged from the smoke, waving at the stunned soldier behind her.

I have to admit, I was stunned again by Chen Yiyang's series of familiar and smooth movements. I think it's not just me, the male comrades who watched this scene are probably also sighing in admiration.

  "One o'clock direction, Vietnamese reinforcements!"

Wang Kechang's words made me come to my senses, and after adjusting my perspective, I saw that the enemy had dispatched five or six people to fill in the gap on our left flank.

Normally, five or six well-trained Vietnamese soldiers would be enough to take on a whole platoon of our troops. But... now this squad has me and my sniper rifle, plus Chen Yiyuan...

And so, the time of great slaughter has arrived!
