Chapter 40

  Chapter 40

"Attention all! Get ready for battle!" The company commander shouted loudly from behind a small mound of earth.

But nobody knew what preparations to make. Here was our camp, the school playground... The playground meant no trenches, no shelters, so what were we preparing for?

The old soldier was fine, knowing that as soon as the gun fired, he immediately fell down, which at least reduced the chance of being hit by bullets or shrapnel. As for the new recruit...he ran around in all directions, and after a wave of bullets and shells, several soldiers were shot down again.

A few of the soldiers under me were still clever, each one crouching motionless, only... I believe they were intimidated by these bullets and shells.

  。

I didn't care about them either, and after a few moves, I crawled into a sand pit and hid myself.

This should be a place for Vietnamese students to practice long jump, and it's probably the only sports equipment that people below the poverty line in Vietnam can afford. It seems like nobody has used it for a long time, so the sand in the pit was as hard as stone, and I spent a lot of effort to make a decent bunker for myself.

"Second squad leader!" I had just dodged in when Knife Scar yelled at me: "What are you hiding for... suppress the enemy's firepower!"

"What? Suppressing enemy firepower?" I was stunned: "Just me alone?"

"Who else if not you?" Scar shouted loudly: "Otherwise, what's the point of assigning a gun to you?"

"Damn it!" I spat out the sand that had splashed into my mouth, and cursed in my heart: I'm willing to come and fight with my life on the line, but being assigned a sniper rifle makes it seem like I owe you guys something.

But after thinking about it, he still followed Scar's orders and raised his gun.

Take a look outside through the sniper scope... No wonder Knife Scar yelled at me, all the devils were shooting at us from the high grounds of civilian houses 500 meters away.

Our army's 56 semi-automatic rifle had a range of only over 400 meters, and the 56-style assault rifle could hit accurately at 300 meters. At this distance, nearly half of our weapons were ineffective. Although the machine gun's range could reach 800 meters, its accuracy was not enough due to recoil and barrel movement. Moreover... The enemy's firepower basically focused on the machine gunner's position, so although there weren't many enemies, our army was suddenly beaten to the point of being unable to fight back.

This is the disadvantage of not having long-range individual weapons. From this point, it seems that this Vietnamese army unit is quite familiar with our military's equipment, and this sneak attack was clearly planned to target our weaknesses.

But... they didn't think there was still this sniper rifle!

I thought of returning home, but my hands didn't slow down. I took aim at a Vietnamese machine gunner, held my breath and pulled the trigger.

This shooting method was learned from the old man, and I still remember him saying to me: "The gun is in your hand, the butt of the gun is on your shoulder, when you breathe in and out, the gun will also move with it. If you want to hit accurately, hold your breath."

Let's hold our breath, and the devils will be out of breath... it's worth it!

Then "bang!" A gunshot sounded, and the head of the North Vietnamese soldier who had set up his machine gun on the roof and was firing wildly at us fell to the ground.

This Viet Cong was a clever guy, most Vietnamese houses were wooden with peaked roofs that made perfect foxholes for him. All he had to do was climb up on the roof and set his machine gun up on the ridgepole, only his head would be exposed.

But... this brain's capacity is already enough for me.

"Good hit!" A few meters away came the voice of Knife Scar. However, I didn't dare to feel even a little proud, because I knew that at this moment I needed to remain calm.

"Bang!" Another gunshot rang out, and a North Vietnamese soldier who had set up his machine gun at the window suddenly burst into a flower of blood, then was knocked backward by the recoil of the bullet.

The window is also a good machine gun position, the windows are all covered, and the interior is relatively dark (the simple houses in Vietnam generally have poor lighting), and the muzzle will also spray sparks and smoke, making it difficult for people outside to see the exact location.

Maybe someone will say, the window is just that big, and shooting at the window with a gun would be enough?

It's not as easy to fight in reality as it is in imagination. The window of opportunity is small, and the target only exposes a head. If you shoot at the window and hit the head, that can only be attributed to luck.

The timing of my shot was actually quite simple, the target had a regular control over the machine gun's left and right sweeps, so I observed the swinging arc, but when the arc was about to point at me... that is, when the head was facing me directly, it was also the time to pull the trigger.

The "bang" was fired by a rocket launcher gunner.

The rocket launcher is quite powerful. Because as long as the operation is skilled, or in other words, with good coordination with the secondary gunner, loading and firing, reloading and firing... The rate of fire is still quite frightening. In addition, the rocket launcher also has incendiary shells, armor-piercing shells, and fragmentation shells, which can destroy enemy fortifications and tanks, as well as infantry, making it a necessary infantry weapon.

However, the drawback is that every time after launching, there will be a long tail dragged behind. If it were elsewhere, I believe these well-trained Vietnamese soldiers would also shoot and change positions.

However... the Viet Minh were in a narrow house, which had only two windows in total. Moreover, the Viet Minh thought that our army did not have accurate firepower to hit him, so he felt at ease and kept switching positions between these two windows.

  。

So I aimed my gun at another window and waited for him, just waiting for him to stick out his head and barrel when I would pull the trigger...

After I hit several key points in a row, the enemy's firepower suddenly weakened a lot. However, the enemy's quality was really good, they quickly noticed me, the sniper who made them suffer heavy losses. Before I could fire my fourth shot, two machine guns were already firing at me, shooting out dense waves of bullets...

I should say I'm relatively lucky, because the ones dealing with me were Vietnamese machine gunners rather than snipers. Otherwise, if there was a Vietnamese sniper facing me... I'd probably be done for by now.

It was only later that I found out the Vietcong did have snipers, but we were not their strategic target, so they didn't deploy them in this direction.

However, the machine gun bullets still pinned me down in the sand pit and I couldn't move at all. The whizzing sound of bullets "zip zip..." was everywhere around my ears, and sometimes I could even feel the heat of the bullets and the hot air they brought as they flew by.

Life is sometimes precious, and at other times worthless. When it's precious, no amount of money can buy it; when it's worthless, a single bullet can end it... That's how short the distance to death is - just a few centimeters away from me. If I lift my head slightly... this life will be over.

However, the enemy's machine gun bullets were concentrated in my direction, which gave some time to other soldiers, and they quickly recovered and organized several machine guns to fight against the devils. The bullets above my head also decreased a lot.

"Second monitor!" I had just caught a breath, when the company commander roared at me: "What are you still stunned for? Don't you hurry up and fight? Keep fighting!"

"Damn! Is this going to cost me my life?" I spat out the sand that had been poured into my mouth, thinking to myself that at this moment, who knows which devilish Japanese soldier is staring at me, and as soon as I stick my head out...

But Lao Zhang doesn't care about me that much, he only knows that with this gun I can accurately take down the Viet Cong, so he's still over there shouting at me: "Shoot, shoot hard!"

I don't care about you that much! I won't risk my life for just one order, so I took a look around and saw that even the small mound of earth could provide cover, so without thinking twice, I rolled over and rushed behind the small mound.

  。

It turned out that my worries were also justified, just as I rolled and crawled up for a moment, a row of bullets "whizzing... whizzing..." followed me all the way behind until I hid in the small earth mound before reluctantly stopping the shooting.

This is not because I'm a coward, but I'm very clear that I've already been targeted by the Vietnamese devils.

Isn't that so? Even the Lao Da knows I'm the only one who can accurately take out the Viet Cong with a single shot, and those Viet devils won't know either? Those Viet devils are all battle-hardened veterans, will they give me time again, give me another chance to take them down one by one?

But Lian Chang still didn't understand the reason, he saw that I not only didn't carry out his orders, but instead ran to his side and hid, so in extreme anger he opened his mouth and scolded: "What the hell are you doing? Why aren't you shooting?"

I was speechless and didn't know how to explain it. Actually, this can't be blamed on him, our unit had never had a sniper before, let alone any sniper tactics, so it's normal that the company commander wouldn't know how to command.

Since you won't carry out orders and won't explain, then pretend to have something to report.

Then I hesitated for a moment and said: "That... Commander Lian, listen... the sound of those Japanese devils' guns doesn't seem quite right!"

"What's wrong?" Lian Zhang was still fuming and wouldn't listen to my explanation, waving his pistol and shouting: "Get him!"

I was at a loss and had no choice but to feel around the back of the mound, pretending to be checking the situation, but this brief delay actually allowed me to hear that the gunshot didn't sound quite right.

"Go on!" I said: "Listen carefully, the gunfire in the northeast direction is getting denser!"

"Mind your own business!" Lian Zhang, clearly out of patience, said in a low voice, "I'm telling you, Second Squad Leader, if you're afraid to fight, believe me, I'll shoot you with one bullet!"

I can only feel helpless and bitter: damn it, there are Vietnamese guns waiting for me outside, and inside, the platoon leader's gun is still pointing at me... aren't they pushing me to my death?

But I don't know if it's because of my talkativeness or fate, at this time I suddenly blurted out: "What's in the northeast? Why are the devils constantly bombing that place..."

"Northeast?" At this time, Lian Chang suddenly realized: "Ah, it's bad... It's the artillery battalion, those devils must be trying to take out the artillery battalion!"
