Chapter 18: The Mysterious Mr. Lings Outer Story

  Mr. Leng's Outer Story

Dazzling lightning illuminated everything before his eyes into a dazzling white, he stared blankly as Xiaobao was engulfed by the lightning in front of him. He went mad and rushed towards the lightning, but was violently bounced back.

It seemed as if there was an invisible barrier blocking his footsteps from reaching her side.

He rushed forward time and again, only to be bounced back each time. Although he was just a stone's throw away, he couldn't touch him no matter how hard he tried.

The lightning flashed and disappeared, everything around turned to scorched earth, the barrier that blocked his footsteps vanished, he finally rushed over, but it was already too late, the place where he once stood was now empty, and his shadow could no longer be found.

Does a ghost have tears? He didn't know, something flowed out of his eye sockets and slid down his cheeks, disappearing into the air before it even hit the ground.

Xiao Bao hasn't died, he wouldn't cry. Xiao Bao must still be here, he's playing with him just like before, waiting for him to find him, and then he'll happily call out "ge ge" (brother) just like before.

When Ninth Uncle and the others arrived, Da Bao had already dug a very deep hole. He was squatting at the bottom of the hole, his hands slowly scooping up the mud on the ground, muttering Xiaobao's name in his mouth.

"Dà bǎo, nǐ bié zhè yàng."

Translation: "Daba, don't be like this."

Ming Shu jumped in and squatted beside Da Bao, stopping the movement of his hand. Da Bao raised his head, his eyes a dull blankness. Ming Shu saw the blood tears flowing on his face, and his heart ached with pain.

"Dabao, you still have me, Ming Shu is here..."

Ming Shu held Da Bao tightly and said repeatedly.

Dabao still looked dull and seemed not to have heard Ming Shu's voice, his mouth only murmuring Xiaobao's name.

Jiu Shu stood at the edge of the pit, turning his back, unable to bear looking again.

  He still used that method.

Jiǔ shū xiǎng qǐ jǐ tiān qián de nà yè wǎn, xiǎo bǎo zhǎo dào tā, xún wèn yǒu mei yǒu bì kāi tiān zhù de fāng fǎ.

  Translation:

Ninth Uncle thought back to the night a few days ago when Little Treasure found him and asked if there was any way to avoid the heavenly punishment.

At that time, he told him that only one of them could survive.

They kill people and commit murder, but saving lives is accumulating merit. However, that merit is not enough to offset the sins of those two people.

He remembered that at that time he said that everything was caused by him, and he was willing to bear all the heavenly punishment, as long as Da Bao could live.

Those merits were insufficient to wipe out the sins of two people; how about one person?

He gave him a charm and he stuck it on Taibao's body when the heavenly punishment came.

All the sins were transferred onto him, leaving Dabao with only merits.

The calamity of two people, all borne by him alone.

Jiǔ shū zòng huái zhōng tāo chū yī gè xìn fēng, sòng dào Dà Bǎo shǒu zhōng.

  Translation:

The ninth uncle took out an envelope from his bosom and handed it to Da Bao.

"He said: 'This is a letter from Xiaobao to you, and it's the only thing he left in this world. You'd better take a good look at it.'"

The older brother never knew that the younger brother could write. It was as if he had never known that timid little brother had such great courage, and when disaster struck, he pushed him away.

He couldn't read, so Ming Shu read out the contents of the letter to him.

Dabao, by the time you read this letter, I will be gone. I know it's not right, we promised to be together forever, but now I've left you behind. But Dabao, how can I bear to let you face heavenly punishment with me?

I know I've done right by everyone else, but I haven't done right by you, sorry for not being with you until the end.

Dabao, I'm gone. You'd better stay with Ming Shu. You're so silly and always get bullied without even realizing it. Following Ming Shu is a safer bet, although he's not reliable, at least he won't sell you out.

Dà bǎo, don't be sad for me, I'm fine, really. Xiǎo bǎo has never lied to Dà bǎo before, you have to believe me. This isn't the end for me, I will live well in another world.

Dabao, stop killing people and use your abilities to save them instead. When you have accumulated enough merits, go find Ninth Uncle and ask him to help you attain enlightenment and be reincarnated as a human being again.

Dà bǎo, you are a good older brother, I hope that in the next life, I can still be your younger brother...

A thin sheet of paper in his hand, now seemed to weigh a thousand taels. The empty and dull eyes had a hint of luster, he held the letter tightly against his chest, as if embracing a treasure.

Heart-wrenching pain swept in, blood-like tears gushed out, his wailing was so desperate and sorrowful, as if the entire world had collapsed.

Xiao Bao, when thunder strikes your body, does it hurt?

Many years passed and when Ninth Uncle and Ming Uncle had become white-haired old men, Da Bao finally accumulated enough merit to be reborn again.

When the ghost officer from the underworld came to take him away, Da Bao looked at Jiu Shu and asked softly: "Jiu Shu, did Xiao Bao lie to me when he said I would meet him again?"

Da Bao's eyes were deep and unfathomable, his emotions invisible at the bottom of them. Ninth Uncle nodded slowly and said, "You will meet him."

Dabao followed Gui Cha away, and Ming Shu finally spoke up: "Why did you deceive him?"

They all knew that the ghosts destroyed by thunder would disperse and never have a reincarnation.

"We know, but Da Bao doesn't, so shouldn't we give him some hope?"

As long as there is hope, there will be a future. Rather than letting him know the truth, it's better to weave a false future and let him believe that they will meet again someday.

Author's note: Every single extra chapter is a torture! By the way, I find my own torture points quite strange...
