Chapter 4: Only Living On

  Chapter 4: Only Survival

Staring at the pile of food covered in fresh blood, no one dared to move. Thinking about eating the food off the corpse, they were all forcing themselves not to throw up. Where was their appetite?

Moreover, this lieutenant colonel was obviously of devilish level, and would shoot at the slightest movement, so that for a time no one dared to advance.

The major didn't pay attention to them, still staring at the electronic watch on his wrist, and whispered to himself: "Ah, little guys, you don't eat but someone else will, poor things, you'll have to starve for a day."

"Of course, if you can make it till tomorrow."

What he said had an effect, and some people were already trying to get up shakily.

Xu Ming also stood up. Although there were two baskets of food, the baskets were not big and could not feed twenty or so people. Not even ten people could eat their fill.

He knew the lieutenant colonel wasn't joking. After dinner, there was another assessment? What was it? Whatever it was, he had to eat first before talking about it.

Xu Ming was the first to rush out, quickly jumping in front of the food, grabbing three breads, two boxes of milk, and four sausages, before disappearing into the crowd again.

The lieutenant colonel looked at Xu Ming in surprise, a hint of a smile appearing on his lips.

Even Xu Ming himself was surprised at his own agility, he wasn't exactly a sportsman, but rather the type of person who stays indoors and gets flabby. How did he become so agile? Had crossing over to this world improved his physical constitution?

With Xu Ming being the first to eat crab, others rushed to grab food, but they were all things on the corpses, and they didn't have much appetite either, so they didn't take much. Even so, there were still eight or nine young people who didn't get any food.

Just as everyone was scrambling for food, Xu Ming had already swallowed a sausage into his stomach, half a box of milk had gone in, and half a loaf of bread had been gnawed away. This was absolutely the worst-tasting food he had ever eaten. The milk was bland like water, with a sour stench, the bread was dry as stone, and the sausages were completely moldy.

He ate while handing Martina a box of milk and a loaf of bread, mumbling: "Hurry up and eat."

Martina stared at Xu Ming's mouthful of blood and bread crumbs in horror, as if she was looking at a vampire, her pretty face pale.

"Eating is necessary for survival, and survival allows us to think about the future."

Martina heard this and her whole body trembled, she lowered her head and stared blankly at the small hands that were already stained with fresh blood from touching food, suddenly made a very big decision, and started devouring the food like a wolf.

It was just that when she ate, she could occasionally still hear a sound like vomiting but being forcibly suppressed.

"What a strong girl! If she were a girl from a peaceful and prosperous era, she would probably be scared to death by this scene. Where would she have the chance to eat?"

Xu Ming eats very quickly, this is a good habit cultivated from often playing games all night, no way, every game time is very tight, let alone eating this kind of packaged snack food, even eating regular meals also ends in three minutes.

Just as the food was just snatched away, Xu Ming wiped his mouth with a handful of blood-stained fingers and immediately drew beautiful blood marks on his face.

He glared at the nearby boy with his mouth open, full of menace.

These boys with food stuffed their mouths, some eating and vomiting at the same time, while others stared greedily at those who were eating, occasionally glancing over at the lieutenant.

The major smiled slightly and said slowly: "There are still two minutes, the little ones who haven't eaten their fill should pay attention, time is running out."

It was as if they had been given tacit permission, the group of boys who hadn't gotten anything to eat suddenly charged into the crowd, fists, feet, shoes, belts, teeth - anything that could be used was employed. In an instant, the entire classroom was filled with wails, cries of pain and excited shrieks.

Martina's food was not finished, and there were still half a loaf of bread. Two relatively thin boys, about 1.75 meters tall, stared at Martina's food.

They rushed to Martina's side, one boy was about to grab her, another raised his foot, ready to kick Martina away, lest she counterattack.

Xu Ming was right next to her, where they would let them get away with it. Although there was no realistic hand-to-hand combat capability, they still often engaged in close combat in the game.

One boy's hand was pulled by Xu Ming, and with a sudden tug, it just reached another boy's calf. Xu Ming lifted up, the other boy lost his balance and immediately fell to the ground.

And this boy's left hand still wanted to hit him, Xu Ming's head was against the boy's chest and he slammed into it, holding the boy's right hand with force upwards.

  "Ah!"

Accompanied by the mournful cry was a very brittle and abnormal bone sound, the boy wailed on the ground crying out for his father and mother.

Another boy also climbed up and saw his companion's miserable appearance, hurriedly pulled him to one side, looking at Xu Ming with a resentful face.

Xu Ming also didn't pursue, and quietly stood in front of Martina.

He has a record of one win and two losses, but no one dares to challenge him.

Martina gave Xu Ming a grateful look, quickly suppressing the surging in her stomach and finishing the bread in her hand, and drinking all the milk in the carton.

The lieutenant colonel's electronic watch rang.

"Unfortunately, kids, time's up, and those who haven't finished their food should throw it on the floor."

The crowd gradually quieted down, some had just grabbed food and hadn't had time to eat yet, others were reluctant to throw it away, while others had only eaten half of it, if they threw it away now, they would appear even hungrier.

"It seems you don't understand what I'm saying." The lieutenant colonel still had a smile all over his face, "But that's okay, I believe with your intelligence, you'll figure it out."

A sudden shot rang out without warning.

A boy holding a bread secretly stuffed into his mouth, still maintaining the posture of gnawing on the bread, was shot through the center of his eyebrows, leaving a deep bullet hole in the wall behind him. Fortunately, there was no one behind him, otherwise the remaining force of the bullet would have killed another person.

The result of this shot was that everyone threw all the food in their hands onto the ground, just like throwing hot yams.

"I told you so." The major chuckled and said: "You smart ones will understand. You little brats who haven't eaten yet, come over here."

The lieutenant drew an imaginary line in the air, and the crowd parted instantly. Six people didn't get anything to eat, including a girl who looked like a doll, and of course, the two boys who attacked Martina.

  "Superior officers, please step forward."

The two soldiers behind him took a step forward in unison, shouldering their assault rifles.

Everyone was frightened by this action, and a boy even urinated in his pants.

The company commander frowned and pointed at the boy in the wet pants, saying: "You stand over there too."

The boy let out a strange cry of "ah" and fell to the ground with a thud.

"Useless trash, keeping you is a waste of food." The lieutenant's gaze turned extremely gloomy, and with a raised hand, he fired two shots at the fainted boy.

The boy didn't even have time to let out a miserable cry, and with a thud, he lay motionless on the ground.

  "Seniors, prepare."

That doll-like girl suddenly knelt down, tearfully saying: "Major, please spare my life, I'll do anything you want, just don't kill me."

"Oh? Anything at all? What would you do?" The lieutenant colonel seemed somewhat interested.

That girl seemed to have grasped a lifesaving straw, speaking incoherently: "I can do everything, Captain. No matter what pose you want, I can do it; no matter what method you want, I can do them all."

"Not bad." The major chuckled and said, "Unfortunately, I don't have that kind of energy."

With that said, he waved his hand and the two upper soldiers' rifles fired simultaneously. A burst of intense gunfire made everyone crouch in the corner, not even daring to breathe.

After the gunfire stopped, all six corpses were riddled with bullet holes.

The lieutenant colonel casually put the pistol into his gun bag and said, "Alright, the assessment for the first lesson has ended. There's some good news to share with everyone - the second round of assessments is about to begin. Before we start, I'd like to solemnly announce that this time, each classroom will select three people. With a total of sixteen classrooms, it means we might recruit up to forty-eight people. Unfortunately, we only need six people. These six individuals will receive the rank of senior officer and represent the people and the nation in completing the important mission of striking against the opposition."

"As soon as I confer the rank of upper soldier on you, I can responsibly tell everyone that I can guarantee that you will have enough to eat every day while you are alive. Of course, if you die, we don't care."
