Chapter 41: The Desperate Defense (2)
The enemy saw that Tianhu was trying to drag the mortar back, and they intensified their firepower, shooting at him with dense volleys. Tianhu had no choice but to abandon the mortar and retreat back into the house.
However, this move made it impossible for the enemy to use the mortar again. As long as the enemy dared to charge forward, Li Fei, Haren, and Mawa on the upper floor would take them out one by one. The street was narrow, and the enemy couldn't swarm in all at once; they could only come in small groups, making them easy targets for Li Fei, Haren, and Mawa.
The enemy commander was furious, shouting angrily as night began to fall. Seeing that they had made no progress after a long day of fighting, the enemy launched a fierce attack on Tianhu's position from both front and back.
Tianhu's machine gun ammunition was depleted, and he could only use his rifle to shoot. The four rifles were not enough to keep up with the enemy's intense assault. Just as the enemy was about to break through their defenses, Tianhu ordered Mawa to retreat into the house.
Mawa refused, saying that retreating would be equivalent to waiting for death. She continued to shoot at the enemy, her aim accurate and deadly.
Tianhu tried to persuade Mawa to retreat, but she insisted on staying. He eventually grabbed her and pulled her into the house, then closed the door and barricaded it with furniture. He told Mawa to climb up onto the wall, but she hesitated.
Tianhu climbed up onto the wall himself, then pulled Mawa up after him. They were followed by a young girl who had been cowering in fear. Just as they reached the top of the wall, an enemy grenade exploded inside the house.
Tianhu quickly pushed Mawa and the girl down to the ground, shielding them from the blast. He then led them along the wall, calling out to Li Fei and Haren to follow.
As they moved to the rooftop of another house, the enemy burst into the room below, searching for them. Tianhu positioned himself with his back to Mawa, Li Fei, and Haren, guarding three sides, while the girl was placed in a blind spot. Whenever an enemy soldier appeared on the rooftop, Tianhu would shoot him in the head.
The battle continued, with the streets filling up with Japanese corpses. However, more and more enemy soldiers were climbing onto the rooftops, and it seemed that Tianhu's group could no longer hold out. Suddenly, a fierce gunbattle erupted outside the city, with at least hundreds of people involved.
