Chapter 11: The Wine of That Night

Volume 2 Chapter 11 The Wine of That Night (8)

Jin Shunyu was both angry and thought the man in front of her was lovely, so she simply took out a dozen or so jars of wine and pickled vegetables, arranging them on the kang in two rows, with a somewhat fierce and murderous aura.

  "It's officially starting now!"

Chen Zizhong took off his top, revealing his shiny black back, and sat on the kang table with a loud thud. He opened his mouth to drink the pickled vegetables, stretched out his hand to pour wine, and startled Jin Shunyu so much that her eyes rolled back.

Jin Xunyu was so angry that she gritted her teeth, but she was already half drunk. Chen Zizhong was the real bottomless pit. She knew she couldn't compete with him, and she was also curious about how much food he could stuff into his belly. So she brought up a large bowl of rice.

"Kimchi is salty, but it's good with rice."

Chen Zizhong pushed away the rice pot: "Rice is a rare thing, leave it for the mushroom head."

"There's still some at home. This pot can cook four catties of rice, I'm just afraid you won't be able to finish it." The woman's family was really thin-faced, with all their thoughts written on their faces.

Chen Zizhong no longer retreated, his hands covered in kimchi juice dug into the pot, and he chewed with a loud "chomping" sound. After eating two mouthfuls, it seemed like he wasn't satisfied, so he simply poured wine into the pot and ate with a mixture of half wine and half rice, making a messy sound.

Chen Zizhong is a weird talent, with a stomach that can't be satisfied by eating or drinking. While others use rice to go with dishes, he uses rice to go with wine.

The Chinese pay attention to food being delicious and fine, but during wartime, people didn't have the luxury of being picky, nor did they have the means to be.

Four jars of pickled vegetables, three jars of wine, and half a pot of rice all became ghosts in Chen Zizhong's belly, but Chen Zizhong still didn't show any signs of stopping.

Jin Shunyu thoroughly softened up, but she wouldn't utter a word of defeat from her mouth. She just pushed away the wine bowl and calmly smoothed out her hair.

Chen Zizhong was still drinking and eating kimchi, Jin Xiangyu didn't say a word, staring blankly at the wall opposite her, on which hung a mountain cat skin, the largest pelt her husband had shot before his death. She knew that after getting drunk tonight, the guerrilla troops would move in tomorrow, and Daher Village might never be peaceful again.

Chen Zizhong drank like an enemy, and his words became more and more incoherent. He talked about his deceased father and brothers, saying that his sacrificed comrades were all as strong as iron leopards. He said the Japanese devils and American devils were the same, and couldn't be driven away. In the future, every village in Korea would become a widow's village, and it would have to become a country of widows.

The two of them drank from noon till the lights were lit, their faces red and necks thick, the wine fumes intoxicating Xiao Hui Zhen, who lay on the kang saying nonsensical things.

Chen Zizhong didn't return for a whole day, which made Pu Dongming anxious. He called over Ding Rugang and the squad leader to discuss what to do. Ding Rugang was worried that Chen Zizhong might be in danger and suggested taking some men to rescue him from the village. Pu Dongming spoke vaguely, saying that Chen was a bold and handsome man with many romantic conquests. In the Northeast, whenever young women saw him, they would swoon. What if he slept with a widow? Hou Fengzi immediately turned against him, swearing that if Chen broke any rules, he would cut off his head and use it as a chamber pot. Ding Rugang dragged away Hou Fengzi, insisting on taking men to rescue Chen. Pu Dongming asked him what they would do if the villagers of Daher Village were violent and had tied up or killed Chen Zizhong. Ding Rugang's face turned serious as he said that if Chen was tied up, they would rescue him; if he was killed, they would avenge his death. Pu Dongming panicked, saying that this wouldn't do, but he couldn't stop the fierce men from charging into the village like wolves.

That day, Hou Fengzi looked at Ding Rujing with a serious expression for the first time.

Ding Ru just led a team into the village, bursting into Jin Shunyu's home, and was immediately hit with the pungent smell of wine. He saw six or seven large wine jars on the table and kang (heated bed platform), and his eyes widened in surprise.

Jin Shunyu's drunken eyes swept over a row of black and shiny gun barrels: "What? Afraid I'll harm your captain?"

Ding Ruogang said to Chen Zizhong: "Captain, it's dark."

Jin Xunyu was snubbed and lost face, grabbed a wine jar to smash Ding Ruguang, but was stopped by Chen Zizhong.

Hou Fengzi said bluntly: "Yes, I'm just afraid you'll harm people."

"I'm not a fox spirit, why would I harm people?" Jin Shunyu's eyes sparkled: "What if I really did harm someone?"

Hou Fengzi is a straightforward person: "Killed to accompany the captain's burial, alive without a wife, dead with a warm coffin."

Jin Xunyu laughed so hard that her flowers shook and her voice was like a swallow's, she grasped Chen Zizhong's collar and coquettishly shouted: "You're in on it, your brother is too, from now on Dahai Village will be your old nest, we widows and orphans can't take revenge, you help us take revenge."

Chen Zizhong laughed until he rolled on the ground: "Alright, alright."

Jin Shunyu crawled around on the kang, riding on Chen Zizhong's body like a horse: "We said it was good, you also helped me carry water and chop firewood, and even drank wine on my family's kang. From now on, you are a man of my family. Whether to stay in Korea or return to China, I'll listen to you, but there is one thing, don't abandon us, don't die."

Chen Zizhong rolled his eyes, suddenly pushed Jin Shunyu down from the kang, and fell to the ground. He stuffed his fingers into his mouth, stirred, and spat out filthy things flying everywhere.

Ding Ruogang shouted loudly: "He's drunk! He's drunk! The captain is drunk, hurry up and carry him back!"

Wu Xiaomao blocked Jin Shunyu, clinking glasses to toast her: "Thanks for the understanding and support, Comrade Jin Shunyu. You're also drunk, go to bed and turn off the lights."

Hou Fengzi carried Chen Zitong and fled outside. Chen Zitong grasped his shoes in his hand and hit his own head, "Damn it! We've fallen into an ambush!"
