Volume 2 Chapter 11 The Wine of That Night (7)
Jin Xunyu sat up straight, his voice loud and clear, as if capturing Chen Zizhong was a piece of cake. Chen Zizhong had lost the momentum he had earlier, half-reclining in front of the kang table, picking up a piece of kimchi to examine it carefully before tossing it into his mouth, where it knocked against his teeth several times before being slowly swallowed, and after taking one bite, he would smack his lips twice.
Chen Zizhong is an old guerrilla with experience. To stand firm in the enemy's rear, there are only four things: mobilize the masses, build a party, establish a government, and set up armed forces. Building a party and government in Korea is the task of the People's Army, and the guerrilla team does not lack weapons, but lacks a good mass foundation, which is also the most difficult point. After all, it is a foreign land, and it is impossible to get the smile of the old hundred surnames, and there is a high possibility that they will starve to death in the deep mountains and forests. Jin Shunyu becomes especially important, and she must be made to obey absolutely, and be of one mind with the guerrilla team. Chen Zizhong cannot bear to play tricks on such a straightforward woman, but this drink is worth the lives of several hundred members of the guerrilla team.
In the war years, people were hot-tempered and fond of drinking. At every celebration banquet, Chen Zizhong would encounter several troublemakers who wanted to make a scene with him, often using cups, bowls, and basins. It was not unusual for men with big arms to drink heavily, but Chen Zizhong had also seen women with large capacities. That year in the Northeast, Chen Zizhong accompanied an old veteran leader to win over a Nationalist general. The general had six concubines and chose the sixth one to accompany him for drinks. The sixth concubine was a ruthless person who used her charm to kill people. She wore a tight-fitting,米色旗袍 (a type of traditional Chinese dress) with high heels that clicked loudly as she walked behind Chen Zizhong. With a smile on her face, the sixth concubine tried to persuade the old leader to drink more, but was blocked by Chen Zizhong, who drank bowl after bowl with her instead. After drinking over ten large bowls, the sixth concubine still showed no signs of intoxication and excused herself to go to the restroom. The general said with a hint of sarcasm, "It's said that your army is full of heroes..." Before he could finish speaking, the sixth concubine returned, her 米色旗袍 gone, revealing a red bellyband on her pale skin, her eyes reddened as she loudly declared that she would not leave until she was drunk.
The woman either didn't drink wine, or if she did, she would at least have three large bowls. Chen Zizhong saw Jin Shunyu sipping her wine with a small mouth, and her eyes grew brighter as she drank more. He knew he had met a worthy opponent in the wine-drinking arena. She was an expert at drinking slowly, savoring each sip, and wouldn't get drunk all night. Chen Zizhong, on the other hand, would stuff himself like a glutton and burst his stomach in no time if he didn't control himself. As a peasant, he had a rustic air about him and knew well the saying that "a widow's doorstep is full of gossip", so he wasn't in a hurry.
As expected, Jin Shunyu drank half a tank of wine and became impatient, frowning: "Eat with a big mouth, have some manly style!"
Chen Zizhong chuckled and looked at Jin Shunyu's wine bowl, also chuckling.
Kim Soon-woo's face was covered with frost, and he drank wine faster and faster, without any tricks, letting Hee-jin sit on one side to watch the battle.
In a hurry, two jars of wine were drunk, and Jin Shunyu's gaze dissipated. Chen Zizhong still had half a jar of pickled vegetables in his arms. Jin Shunyu clinked the wine bowl against the jar in Chen Zizhong's arms: "You lost, your people are never allowed to enter Dahu Village again."
Chen Zizhong scrambled up, his eyes shining brightly.
"Thirsty!" Chen Zizhong snatched the wine bowl and poured it into his mouth.
Jin Shunyu was stunned, the wine bowl was raised in front of his eyes and he forgot to open his mouth.
"Damn, I'm thirsty!" Chen Zizhong hugged a jar of pickled vegetables with his left arm and held a wine bowl with two fingers of his right hand. With a flick of his cheek, half the jar of pickled vegetables was gone in an instant, without even leaving any soup behind.
Chen Zizhong devoured three jars of pickled vegetables and drank up all the wine that Jin Xiangyu had left.
"Is there still some left?" Jin Shunyu was naturally unwilling to admit defeat, and according to her personality, she wouldn't give up until she had drunk herself under the table, drinking until she fell asleep for three days.
Chen Zizhong wiped the soup water from the corner of his mouth with the back of his hand, his eyes darting about in a mixture of despair and provocation: "Hungry! Thirsty! Damn it, I'm starving!"
