Chapter 64: Forced into an Ambush (1)
Heaven really took care of us, and we found a natural cave, with the entrance quite hidden. If the tank hadn't gotten stuck and pulled us in, we wouldn't have discovered this hidden entrance among the weeds.
The space inside the cave is quite large, and with over ten of us staying inside, it still feels very spacious. Gazing at the dimly lit and spacious cave, I couldn't help but sigh in admiration. On a cold winter night in the mountains, to be able to find such a wonderful place is truly a stroke of good luck.
Everyone was tired after a day's work. After arranging the night watch, they lit a bonfire in the center of the cave and sat around it to eat military dry rations.
Because the captain was worried that my mood wasn't good, he didn't arrange for me to take night watch. It just so happened that I was too lazy to care about these things, and sat alone by the fire pit resting quietly. Of course, all of this was accompanied by the sound of Birdman's voice, but it seemed like everyone was in a good mood, gathering around some topic to brag, until they all felt a bit sleepy, then surrounded the fire pit with sleeping bags, put away their weapons, and crawled inside.
The black bear helped me spread out my sleeping bag, patted my shoulder and lay down beside me. I came to my senses and thanked him gratefully before lying down, gazing at the flickering flames on the ceiling of the cave, unable to fall asleep for a long time.
I gazed at the weapon by my side, its blue-black lacquer gleaming with a cold light in the firelight, and I even caught the faint scent of gunpowder in the air, cold yet alluring.
Perhaps, after half a year, the deepest part of my heart has already accepted and gotten used to this kind of life. The restless and turbulent blood in my young heart is full of temptation, that kind of fatal temptation. I don't know what's right or wrong, nor do I have any concept of right or wrong.
A different life, one that ordinary people may never come into contact with in their lifetime, or even know about, is a huge temptation for a young heart!
Young blood is boiling, behind the temptation is a price, and behind the price is life and blood. I know that what I am touching now is the edge of life, it's the war that everyone spits on, despises, scolds and fears to avoid!
And I, perhaps have already gotten used to the feeling of holding a steel gun in my hand. I know this feeling, I can feel that behind the steel gun is blood and life. The scene from this morning seems to appear before me again, the enemy's blood may be tolerable, can be ignored, can give myself an excuse. But innocent people's blood also splatters under bullets, innocent lives disappear in front of our eyes as accessories. Walking to today's step, was I wrong?
As long as I hold onto the gun, sooner or later I will also shoot out this kind of bullet that flies horizontally!
Should I stay?
The second day, just before dawn, the black bear woke me up and handed me a package of military dry rations. I took it directly, tore open the packaging and stuffed it into my mouth, helplessly sighing as I gazed at the top of the cave.
A new day has begun, and I'll be chased around in the mountains again!
Today is destined to be more treacherous than yesterday!
The Russian army is like a spider, weaving a huge web in the forest, and we are the prey struggling in this giant net. There are only two paths in front of us, or two outcomes. Either break through the net and rush out; or be held in the arms of this big spider, slowly torn apart and eaten!
Hastily finishing breakfast, the sky was not yet fully bright, and it was only possible to see the road under our feet in the mountains. Just as we guessed yesterday, the Russian army that was chasing after us stopped pursuing after stepping on the booby traps we set up along the way, giving us plenty of time to rest.
After a brief moment of gathering, the crowd shouldered their equipment and weapons and walked out of the cave, erasing the surrounding marks, and hastily proceeded in the direction of Gekist Town.
The trees beside us and the rocks under our feet quickly disappeared behind us as we rapidly advanced towards our destination.
After daybreak, the Russian army behind us must have also started a new round of pursuit with great eagerness. Last night, facing us who are equally well-trained and unaware of the specific situation, one or two cleverly disguised decoy mines made them dare not to easily launch a pursuit action at night. The Russian army, which has already been exhausted, will not give up its life to pursue us today!
A large number of reinforcements behind, a large number of our brothers around, will definitely make the pursuing Russian army confident. Although yesterday's extensive minefield we set up caused them significant casualties, as long as we encounter any well-equipped "spider web" in the surrounding firepower network, they will mobilize troops to reinforce and eliminate us at the fastest speed!
The landmines have been used up, and the few hand grenades left on our bodies are not willing to be set as trap mines. We must leave some for use when encountering Russian troops. Without these trap mines, the pursuing Russian army behind us will speed up even faster.
After running continuously for nearly an hour, I was already feeling waves of fatigue washing over me, panting heavily. The captain's equipment had been taken over by Hei Xiong and Feng Zi, leaving only the weapon held in his hand. However, after running for such a long time, his face and lips had turned deathly pale, his chest heaving violently up and down, gasping for air like an ox. Yet, he didn't show any intention of stopping to rest.
The captain pulled the tank's handed-over hand over a rock, took two deep breaths, and asked the birdman on the side: "Birdman... how is the situation? Is there any latest intelligence from the Russian army?"
The Birdman wiped the sweat and shook his head, checking the miniature computer fixed on his arm. He raised his head and said to the crowd: "So far, we haven't received any latest intelligence from headquarters. The Russian troops being pursued are all keeping radio silence, reporting their situation every half hour. Headquarters is working hard to collect intelligence and identify their specific location."
"Wait a minute......!"
The birdman let out a loud cry, stopped in his tracks, and quickly operated the miniature computer on his arm.
Intelligence has arrived at headquarters!
Everyone quickly formed a defensive formation, with me, the captain and the birdman protected in the middle.
"Latest intelligence!" The bird man lowered the G36 on his shoulder: "According to the latest intelligence analysis collected by headquarters, a team of about ten Russian special forces has approached our vicinity. According to the coordinates sent, they should be within a kilometer or so around us!"
My heart skipped a beat, what was bound to happen finally did, after running for so long, I'm facing it head-on! My hands couldn't help but tremble slightly, involuntarily gripping the SG552 tightly as I gazed at the crowd. Everyone's eyebrows were slightly furrowed, their eyes vigilantly scanning the surroundings, not a single person spoke.
"Can't we avoid them and go around?" Scorpion Tail asked.
It's best if we can avoid a head-on confrontation, once we open fire, we'll expose ourselves, who knows how many more people will be attracted? By then, all the advantages will be lost, and we can only fight to the end.
"It's impossible!" I couldn't help but interrupt: "The trail we left behind is too obvious, it's impossible to hide!"
Everyone who heard me speak turned their heads to look at me, and I was taken aback myself, wondering why I had spoken up.
The captain thought for a moment and asked the bird man: "How far are the other Russian troops behind us?"
"The troops behind us are probably about 7 or 8 miles away on the mountain road, and it will take some time to rush over. The others are scattered differently, the closest team needs to come to support, at full speed, only about 20 minutes, we have already faced them head-on!"
"Direction."
"Three o'clock to four o'clock direction."
"Take them down! Scorpion tail, scout out the situation, everyone else lay in ambush, try to take them down in an instant! Must withdraw within 20 minutes!"
"Yes!"
The crowd let out a low growl, their eyes flashing with ferocity, and an aura of murder hung in the air.
I licked my dry lips and looked around at the crowd of people with an air of killing intent, feeling a bit at a loss. I... what should I do?
Scorpion Tail carried AWP on his back and quickly climbed up a giant tree for reconnaissance, while Kim Ji-joon also climbed to a slightly higher position to keep watch. Everyone carefully dispersed to find suitable ambush positions.
The captain walked over, standing in front of me with a serious face. Due to the wound on his shoulder, the captain's face was deathly pale and frightening, the scar on his face looked even more ferocious, and he stared at me with bloodshot eyes and asked: "Can you fight?"
"I..."
