Chapter 15: The Tiger in the Dense Forest

  Insufficient balance

I covered the flashlight with my hand, concentrating the light in a small area. Chang Sun and several other soldiers surrounded me, completely blocking out any stray light that might escape through my fingers. As soon as I opened the map, I couldn't help but curse: "Damn it, Dai Bing you son of a bitch!"

The map in my hand was actually an English version of the Indian border, looking at the map is different from holding a Chinese-English dictionary to read and understand the meaning. On the battlefield, any slight deviation can make us, the lone army deep in enemy territory, die without a burial place!

We, a group of fully armed soldiers, crouched in a pit, just like primary school students coping with the final exam, collectively guessing and discussing several times, feeling somewhat nervous, finally roughly determining our position and route. We have now taken a transport plane from Tibet, circling over Bhutan's border, inserting into the disputed territory between China and India, forced to parachute into the primeval forest between Shakti and Tawang, initially estimated to be 40 kilometers off the assembly target.

In fact, reaching the assembly point has become a mere formality. With three hours left before dawn, the remaining assault team members are scattered throughout the 20-kilometer diameter mountain forest. The city soldiers are slightly better off, at least they have high school diplomas and have read a few more books. The rural soldiers were sent to the army after graduating from junior high school. Based on everyone's English level, getting this kind of map is like looking at a heavenly book? In the midst of blind collisions and scrambles, who knows where they've all gone, only ghosts would know.

Although the location we are in is a primitive jungle, after the Indian military lost the Sino-Indian border war in 1962, it has established motorized roads around the jungle area that can allow mechanized units to quickly maneuver through the area. Once a battle occurs, Arjun main battle tanks will arrive on the battlefield within half an hour.

The Indian Army has set up more than 40 firepower points at strategic heights in the mountains, each equipped with two to three high-powered machine guns, one Swedish-made FH-77B 155mm caliber artillery piece, and two mortars, defended by a company of soldiers. Any attempt to capture such a strongpoint would necessarily come at a terrible cost.

Especially the FH-77B artillery equipped by the Indian army in these strongholds, its range is over 40 kilometers. The forced attack will inevitably suffer from the bombardment of 155-caliber heavy artillery. What's even more frightening is that it only takes twelve minutes for the S-30MKI twin-seat long-range fighter-bombers taking off from the air force base on the Indian border to fly over our heads. This is the latest bomber imported from Russia, with comprehensive performance surpassing the US F-15E strategic bomber, currently ranking first in combat power. The precision-guided air-to-ground missiles it carries are a nightmare for any ground forces!

We, these scattered assault troops, are just a few stars in this war machine, not even enough for others to play with. In the minds of most people at home, the Indian military's equipment is still shabby and can be defeated with one blow. However, in reality, India's military investment has been increasing crazily at an annual rate of 15%, and it is the only country in Asia that owns an aircraft carrier. Objectively analyzing the troops on the China-India border, the Chinese army, whether it is the navy, air force, special electronic countermeasures forces or the artillery with a huge influence in mountainous areas, are all at a relative disadvantage in terms of equipment.

Now only a war of unlimited national mobilization, as proposed by Chinese politicians, would put strong pressure on India. After all, they have only one-third of China's land and need to support the same population as China, with their per capita annual output value of $300, which cannot afford a long-term comprehensive consumption war.

This information was also what I learned bit by bit when I went to the military competition platform to worship and learn from Master Jihui. Looking at the map marked with more than 40 firepower points in red pencil, they were evenly distributed on various strategic highlands, tightly pinching every corner of the original jungle, coordinating with motorized troops and air forces, forming a three-dimensional attack position. As time went by bit by bit, Changsun Ting's and my faces became heavier and heavier.

I stretched out my finger and pointed heavily at the location of the No. 103 high ground on the map, saying in a low voice: "If I were a qualified commander, I would temporarily change the assembly point to here! A person who can be appointed as the commander of the assault battalion by the deputy regimental commander should not disappoint me, right?"

Point 103 was relatively central to the area where our assault troops were scattered, and well-trained soldiers could rush there in two hours. The height difference of this hill is more than 300 meters. Due to the limited visibility, the Indian army did not set up a strongpoint here, but only established a border post with about one class of troops stationed there. They lacked necessary heavy firepower and were unable to withstand the lightning-fast attack of the assault troops.

The sky brightened, and we all looked up at the same time. In the southeast direction, someone fired three red and one green signal flares. The four signal flares shot out in different directions and times, obviously with a hidden meaning. Long Sun Ting and I were greatly encouraged, exchanged a smile, and suddenly jumped up. I called out in a low voice: "Follow me and rush forward immediately! Our target is the 103 high ground! We must act quickly, although our commander's clever order for the soldiers to fire signal flares at other locations, this simple coded message can be deciphered by the enemy in less than two hours!"

I was fleeing wildly to the left, and I thought of Yang Qing. This guy is a famous online fantasy sniper, deciphering passwords is his forte. If he hadn't been hit by enemy anti-aircraft fire, he should have arrived at the gathering point in time too?

We eight people formed a column and swiftly passed through the dense forest in silence, carefully avoiding the patrol cars cruising along the highway with a menacing atmosphere. The enemy's artillery fired flares that lit up half of the sky, and everywhere was flashing with flashlights, the barking of military dogs could be faintly heard, and from time to time, sporadic gunfire could be heard from some corner, then quickly fell silent again. Tonight is destined to be a sleepless night, countless soldiers are fighting desperately in this forest.

A sudden burst of gunfire rang out right next to us, and the eight of us dropped down simultaneously. I saw that two or three soldiers had already cocked their guns. I shouted in a low voice: "Halt! Without my order, absolutely do not open fire!"

Having experienced the crossfire of submachine guns, both Long Sunting and I can distinguish that there is no gun pointing at us to attack. Less than 100 meters to our left, a fierce battle is taking place, with the outnumbered side fighting while retreating towards us. Several flares streak across the sky above us, and I clearly see a commando desperately resisting the attack of more than 20 Indian soldiers.

The commando was as tall and strong as Yao Ming, and somehow he had grabbed an M60 heavy machine gun, wrapping the long chain of bullets around his body. Amidst the deafening roar, he fearlessly exchanged fire with the enemy's military jeep-mounted machine gunner. More than 20 assault rifles were trained on this soldier, and amidst the flames that engulfed him, his body burst forth with a multitude of blood flowers. The soldier suddenly let out a long, anguished howl, crashing to the ground as the heavy machine gun flew four or five meters away. His hands and legs had all been shattered by bullets, but because he was wearing bulletproof clothing, he remained alive.

Indian soldiers sneered and walked up to the commando, one of them pulled out a bayonet from his rifle and stabbed it down fiercely. The bayonet was stuck halfway due to the bulletproof vest. The man laughed wildly and said something, another Indian soldier put his own gun behind his back, pressed both hands on the rifle that had been stabbed into the Chinese soldier's body, and together they exerted force, amidst the Chinese soldier's painful screams, the entire bayonet was inserted.

Two Indian soldiers pulled out their bayonets and stabbed downwards with all their might, the bayonet piercing the Chinese soldier's body once again. The Chinese soldier's eyes were wide open, his lips trembling as he tried to lift his head to bite the button on his collar, but a heavy military boot came down on his head, crushing any hope. His strong physique meant that he could not die, and all he could do was watch in horror as the bayonet stabbed into his body again and again, bringing out large amounts of fresh blood.

This is war, what humanitarianism and preferential treatment of prisoners on the battlefield are all nonsense! They are a group of warriors who have killed their way to madness, or they are a bunch of rascals who usually have nothing to do but can only vent their excess energy by fighting. Now they are simply enjoying lawless violence without having to bear the consequences!

I silently lowered my head, such a strong soldier died here, what a pity!

  "Bang bang bang......"

Suddenly a burst of submachine gun fire erupted from our position, and one soldier jumped out while shedding hot tears, firing wildly at the enemy. Under the sudden attack, four or five Indian Abhisit soldiers including those two were shot into sieves, each with at least three to four big holes in their bodies. Due to the internal air pressure, they generously offered their own blood as nutrients to the flowers and grasses in the forest.

"Damn your mother's new soldier's egg!" I cursed loudly, shouting at Zhang Sun Ting: "Cover me, first take the heavy machine gun for me!"

Chang Sun Ting raised his M16 rifle and fired a high-precision shot, hitting the machine gunner who was standing on the jeep, enjoying the slaughter. The gunner's body spun around and fell off the vehicle. I sprinted out like a cheetah, jumping onto the jeep before the rifle had finished firing all its bullets. I grabbed the heavy machine gun and unleashed a frenzy of shots.

All the assault team members we led jumped out and swept wildly, watching the enemy fall in front of us, I didn't feel any joy in my heart, only a bitter taste in my mouth, now we're just killing recklessly on the side of the road, purely because we're tired of living too long!

The headlights of a car flashed by on the opposite side of the road, and a military jeep followed closely by a military truck sped over. It seemed that there were at least a dozen enemies inside. Chang Sun-ting also jumped onto the jeep and shouted wildly: "Boss, we must take them all out in one go, otherwise we'll definitely die on this road!"

I nodded vigorously and shouted: "Whether we live or die, you and I two brothers must fight for this shop, and fight them to the end!"

Chang Sun Ting's fist smashed onto the car stereo, and a burst of energetic music started playing. I laughed loudly: "Damn, it's actually a disco version of 'Shi Gao', I love it! Even if we're both dead, my brother and I can still dance while beating up Heibai Wuchang on our way to Naihe Bridge!"

"Alright then, let's make a deal that in our next lives we'll still be brothers and you'll still be my elder brother!"

  "Alright! Give me a rush!!!!!!"

Chang Sun Ting floored the gas pedal, and the military jeep charged forward like a raging bull, smashing into the oncoming jeep. Along the way, it blared out bursts of wild music, singing in Chinese: "Shake your head, is it cool or not? Nothing's cooler than..."

Awesome, awesome, awesomely awesome! Can it be more awesome than us driving a Jeep at nearly 200 km/h and crashing into another Jeep?!

Chang Sun Ting burst out laughing: "Big Brother, since you became a softie, I've thought about this tragic scene between us brothers more than once. Who would have thought it'd actually come true? But what's with me dreaming of being with Hollywood star Chun Xiao every day, why hasn't heaven granted me that even once?"

I clutched the heavy machine gun tightly, shouting loudly against the strong wind that made my eyes stream with tears: "What's the use of relying on heaven for such things? As long as you and I two brothers can return alive, whichever woman you like, even if I have to snatch her, I'll get her into your bed and let you fire a shot!"

"Alright, remember you owe me a Hollywood actress!"

In our two-man vehicle, we charged forward with the fervor of ancient knights in a jousting match, heading straight for an enemy vehicle of similar tonnage. The driver and lieutenant on the opposing jeep were left staring, agog at the sheer recklessness of our maneuver. When had they ever seen such suicidal behavior? Hadn't all those Japanese samurai died out already? Where did this bunch of kamikaze pilots come from?

  Narrow road meet brave win!

Facing the jeep that had turned into a rocket, the driver opposite fully demonstrated the characteristics of an Indian three-wheeler, recklessly turning the steering wheel with all his might. Amidst the crazy screeching sound of the wheels and road surface, their jeep was thrown up at a 45-degree angle, crashing straight into a huge boulder with a deafening crash. The two hapless guys who hadn't buckled up were stuck to the rock, posing in two strange yoga-like postures that embodied the essence of elegance, making even the great Gurmukh feel inferior!

I and Zhang Songting simultaneously whistled loudly like a couple of little hooligans, I pulled out my pistol and used the butt to violently smash open a box of hand grenades in the car, grabbed one and yelled: "Now, jump!"

The two of us jumped off the jeep at the same time, feeling our bodies flying high in the air, and fell to the ground like this. Even if we didn't die, both legs would be broken, and in the end, it's still a dead end!

The jeep crashed into the military truck, a whole box of grenades exploded with a loud noise, and the two vehicles were thrown out like toys by the fierce air wave, more than ten meters high. None of the soldiers inside had time to jump down, and they all took a free ride on an airplane. It felt like being hit by a giant wooden mallet, I spat out a mouthful of blood in mid-air, and was actually pushed backward by the blast wave, rolling over several times after falling to the ground.

I climbed up to check my body in surprise, and except for accidentally biting my tongue, I was surprisingly unscathed. Looking at Zhang Sun Ting again, he also got up with a silly face. The Death God took pity on me for contributing delicious food to him recently and spared our lives!

On the other side, the battle had already ended, and a fierce attack was suddenly launched. Although the enemy outnumbered us by far, they didn't have time to organize any effective counterattack before being annihilated by the enraged assault team members. They stood quietly in front of the member who was stabbed over ten times and finally died with a smile, paying their respects with the most solemn military salute. I shouted from afar: "Damn you rookie bastards! What are you standing there for? Run quickly, or next time it'll be us who get skewered! Who will you expect to avenge us then?"
