Chapter Twenty Below

  Chapter Twenty

Aunt Li is an old-timer in the company, and even young leaders like Zhou Qu are relatively polite to her. Chen Xiao's words were courteous, but the implication was quite embarrassing.

Zheng Wei also felt a bit awkward, waiting to return to the printing room to see if her documents had been copied, so she could leave as soon as possible. Li Ayi pulled on her sleeve, somewhat embarrassed and lowering her voice, pointing vaguely at the tightly closed meeting room door: "Didn't you see his pre-appointment public notice on the company's internal website? Young people climb quickly, but this temper... never mind, who let him prepare to be a leader? We'll just put up with it."

Zheng Wei returned to his own office and had just bound more than 20 copies of the documents when he received a call from Chen Xiao Zheng's office. "Secretary Zheng, trouble you to send over the materials I requested."

Zheng Wei was secretly relieved that he had just finished organizing the files he needed, and hastily held them in his hands as he walked over to knock on the door of his office. The door was open, and he sat at his desk, hearing the sound, looked up to see him.

Zheng Wei hesitated for a moment when addressing him, unsure whether she should still call him Assistant Chen. The public notice of his promotion had already been posted, and if all went smoothly, he would be the deputy manager in seven days. So she chose to change her address like most people, "Deputy Chen, your documents are here, please take a look."

She placed the items in front of him with both hands, and he glanced at her indifferently. Zheng Wei quickly lowered his eyebrows and waited for him to take a preliminary look without any problems before he could smoothly withdraw.

Zheng Wei listened to Chen Xiao Zheng slowly flipping through the pages, unsure if he was really reading carefully or if time just seemed to be passing slowly for her. He didn't say a word, and she had no reason to leave on her own accord. The waiting process was too long, and when she finally couldn't help but glance at his progress, he happened to have closed the file, taken a deep breath, and neatly stacked the papers before pushing them back in front of her with one hand.

"What's wrong with Vice President Chen?" Zheng Wei was somewhat perplexed.

Chen Xiao Zheng said with a serious face, "Secretary Zheng's document work doesn't have any technical requirements. What's most important is being meticulous. You should understand this."

Zheng Wei hastily picked up a copy to take a look and indeed found that the double-sided copied document had pages 6 and 7 repeated twice due to paper jam in the copier. She felt regretful for not having thoroughly checked it beforehand, and quickly acknowledged her mistake: "Sorry, I'll rebind it immediately."

Chen Xiao Zheng sneered, "Rebinding is a small problem. I'm just reminding you that if you put a little more time into work and less into personal feelings, this mistake could have been avoided." These words made Zheng Wei feel both ashamed and annoyed. Since Zhou Qu let her assist Chen Xiao Zheng, she had been spending over 12 hours in the office every day for a whole week. He would often come up with sudden ideas and wouldn't tolerate even a slight delay. If it weren't for the rush, this kind of thing wouldn't have happened. Now he was actually blaming her for delaying work because of her personal life, which was simply finding fault.

He leaned quietly against the back of the chair, as if waiting for her move. Zheng Wei indeed had an impulse to throw all these documents on his face and scold him loudly, "Chen Xiao Zheng, what are you?"

But she endured it, throwing aside the fact that he was superior to her in position and not mentioning it. She also saw that he just wanted to provoke herself, the more flustered she became, the more pleased he would be. But she refused to let him have his way. So Zheng Wei respectfully tidied up the files he had messed up, with a hint of apology, saying "Sorry Chen Deputy, I didn't sleep well last night so I wasn't focused during the inspection, it won't happen again next time."

Zheng Wei successfully saw the calm in Chen Xiao Zheng's eyes being broken, although his face was still indifferent, but every subtle change deceived others but not her. When she left, she heard him ask in a low voice: "Will you have dreams tonight?"

She recalled the cold sweat she had after waking up from her dream last night, and the pain she felt when he fell was so clear. But was the person in her dream the same as the one in front of her? The real Chen Xiao Zheng would never make a mistake for just a centimeter of emotion in his life.

Zheng smiled and replied: "I slept very well."

At noon, Zheng Wei went downstairs to the cafeteria for lunch and saw the aunt who was cleaning the office building hurrying to the sixth floor. Zheng Wei had always been friendly with these cleaners and laborers, so she asked, "Auntie, what are you rushing to do at this time?" The aunt saw that they were alone and whispered to Zheng Wei, "Vice Manager Chen broke a cup and doesn't know how it was smashed. I heard his palm is all bloody and he's now getting bandaged in the infirmary."

Zheng Wei responded with an "oh" and went to eat as if nothing had happened.

  Visible wounds will heal eventually.
