Chapter Twenty-Five

  Chapter 25 of Part One

A soft and gentle singing voice floated in a quiet little room. Dao Jing sat alone on a stool, facing the steamer emitting hot air on the stove, softly humming his own song:

Dark prison gate, you can never - never shut out that brilliant sunlight.

Dear comrades, sun, flowers, clouds and birds

  And that lovely young girl

They pierce through the dark prison walls and sing towards you——

  They sing for you.

  ……

She hummed softly and repeatedly for a long time, and it wasn't until she seemed to wake up that she stopped singing. She opened the steamer and took out the steamed buns, which were white and large. At this moment, an invisible smile floated on her mouth: "Ah, they're done." She admired her own skills. After cleaning everything up - moving the stove to the courtyard and returning the steamer to the landlord - she went back inside and began to caress and examine each bun one by one: "Which one has the lead bar inside? - Xu Ning and the others will be so happy!"

Since parting ways with Yu Yongze, Jing moved into a small apartment near the beach. Her life was relatively freer and she devoted herself to contacting fellow revolutionaries. To inquire about Xu Ning's situation, she went to visit Mrs. Xu. As a result, her relationship with Xu Ning became connected again. Xu Ning was being held in the Beijing District Court's detention center, and Jing pretended to be his sister and visited him along with Mrs. Xu. When she returned after seeing Xu Ning for the first time, she was truly overjoyed - both for herself and for Xu Ning. Because Xu Ning seemed even more calm and strong since being imprisoned. His handsome face looked very clean, his eyes shone brightly, although he appeared weak and thin, but there was no sign of despair on his face.

"My body is fine, I can eat my fill..." Xun Ning said this to Dao Jingyuan outside the iron bars, describing his life in prison. "The trial has been held twice, the judge said my case is not serious, as long as I publish a statement of repentance, I can be released."

Dào Jìng opened his big eyes and said: "What is meant by 'publishing a newspaper to repent'? - What's going on?"

Xu Ning turned back and gazed at the distant guard with a smile that turned into a bitter smile: "It's all because of myself!"

"What about you, Second Brother? Are you going to report it to the newspaper or not?"

"We won't give in!" Xun Ning shook his head firmly. "All of our political prisoners have resolutely refused. If they force us again, we'll resist with a hunger strike... Ah, Fourth Sister, is your school having a sports meet? That's great..." Xun Ning first spoke in a low voice, but when the guard came over, he raised his voice and gave Dao Jing a warm, meaningful smile.

"I'll write without a pencil - put the lead strip in the bun and send it over..." Xun Ning said to Dao Jing in a low voice, taking advantage of the guard's momentary absence. She nodded and gave him a knowing smile.

Thinking of this, she looked at the steamed bun in her hand and a kind of youthful passion surged up in her. She began to sing softly again:

Lead strip lovely little lead strip!

You are hidden in this soft and white steamed bun like gold hidden among sand.

Oh little pencil lead, lovely little pencil lead!

You will skip past the gloomy eyes of the watchman and grasp---grasp the hands of your comrades.

Lead strip cute little lead strip!

You are a sharp sword, you are a dagger, you will write down the people's call to resistance, you will pierce the throat of reactionaries.

  ……

She gazed out the window, her hands clenched into fists around a steamed bun, humming a low, unconscious tune. Before her eyes, Xu Ning and many fellow inmates in prison were excitedly holding the lead bars she had sent them, hastily writing on the blank pages of books. The reactionary rulers did not allow prisoners to have pens or paper, nor did they permit them to write out the people's voices; but with the lead bars hidden in her steamed bun, they were writing ceaselessly... Throughout the entire dusk, she was intoxicated by this delightful imagination - she had already escaped from the depressed mood that followed Lu Jiaquan's capture. She was overjoyed at having overcome her old self and stepped into a new life.

After dinner, she tidied up the house and hurriedly found a few books to wrap in book covers. She knew that books were still needed in prison, so she used the method she had heard of -

She wrapped all the revolutionary books in old cowhide paper, then wrote "Three Principles of the People", "Outline of National Reconstruction" or "Seven Heroes and Five Righteous Men", "Journey to the West" on the cover. As she wrote, she thought about what would happen if the guard saw her. "Don't care what he's afraid of!" She suddenly felt that everything was going smoothly, that the god of fate had yielded to her, and that she stood tall with pride.

This evening, Dai Yu came to see her again. And brought her several secret publications. His attitude was very gentle and spoke slowly. He looked around Dao Jing's new residence, pursed his lips and smiled slightly: "Very good, simple... Have you contacted anyone? You can focus on doing revolutionary work from now on."

"Lao Dai, I've already found Xu Ning," Dao Jing excitedly told him about the process of finding Xu Ning. "Although he is in prison, but I feel that there is revolutionary power everywhere - Xu Ning has become even stronger in prison, isn't this the power of revolution?"

Dai Yu puffed on his cigarette, nodding his head from time to time as he listened to Dao Jing's words. When she finished speaking, he gently nodded and said: "Great! I know Xu Ning. He will become even better in the future. Because there is also party leadership in prison. You didn't know that, did you?"

  "I don't know."

She gently picked up the pamphlet "Northern Red Flag" sent by Dai Yu and read softly: "'Struggling to create a northern Soviet... ' Is the party calling for the creation of a northern Soviet?" She looked up at him with a surprised and inquiring gaze, "What's the current situation like? I really don't know anything..."

"This is a publication from the past. What about the current situation? China's revolution is getting closer and we need to prepare our strength to seize even greater victories." He slowly explained some revolutionary principles to her, although these were things that Jingyi had heard or read before, she still listened greedily and was exceptionally excited to have found a leader for herself again. When sending him off at the door, she suddenly asked him: "Tomorrow I'm going to see Xu Ning, can you go together?"

Dai Yu shook her head and said: "Don't mention me to him."

The next day, Daojing took the steamed buns to Xuning and then went to Wang Xiaoyan's home - in order to solve her living problems, Wang Xiaoyan introduced Daojing to her home to tutor her two younger sisters. Therefore, every afternoon she had to go to Wang Xiaoyan's home for half a day. After dinner, when she returned from Wang Xiaoyan's home, it was already dark. To save money, she walked from the west city to the east city. After passing the North Sea Bridge and the Forbidden City, she walked to the road near Jingshan East Street, where a small car suddenly stopped beside her with a screech. She continued walking forward, but unexpectedly, two people jumped out of the car and suddenly grabbed her arms tightly, like pincers. Then, another person jumped out of the car, and before she could shout, a large piece of cloth was stuffed into her mouth. In an instant, the three people had pulled her onto the car. The car sped away like lightning.
