Section 23 Nobody expects you to like it

"No one expects you to like it." "Do you really want me to go to your class and read?" he asked distrustfully. "Whoever goes, I welcome," I said lightly. "Hmph," he said. "Don't think I'm afraid of you guys, I just don't like you, you know?" "No one expects you to like it." I struck back at him, "You shouldn't be so full of yourself." "All the top students are sharp-tongued and quick-witted, just like you," he sighed. "Alas, I'm just unlucky." He finished speaking and took a deep drag on his cigarette. I said, "Is there anything else? If not, I'll go in and study." "I'm not an official, why do you need to report to me?" He turned his head away, pretending to look at the stars in the sky. I swung my fist at the back of his head and ran off. One day, when he wasn't around, Tian Ai asked me quietly, "Has Guan Sha talked to you about transferring schools?" "He mentioned it a couple of times," I said lightly. "He asked how our class was." "That's good," Tian Ai said with a smile. "Ran Ran, the more you get to know Guan Sha, the more you'll understand him. He's actually a very hardworking and good kid too." "If Guan Sha heard you say that, he'd definitely be thrilled," I said. Tian Ai just smiled. She was really a great mom, loving Guan Sha to death. A few days later, on a clear morning, we were doing our English reading when Old Liu brought in a new student. He was very tall and carried a basketball, keeping his head down and not looking at us. Old Liu said, "This is our new classmate, Guan Sha. Let's give him a warm welcome." I led the applause. I didn't expect that Old Liu would actually seat Guan Sha with Luo Wei, and move Zhu Liyong, who used to sit with Luo Wei, to the last row. Zhu Liyong seemed a bit unwilling, but he didn't dare say anything. Guan Sha forced a smile and sat down silently beside Luo Wei. Xia Xiaoyu pointed at me, whispering in surprise, "Guan Sha, Guan Sha!" as if Guan Sha was some kind of superstar. Right, he was Guan Sha, my brother from another mother. From now on, I'd be studying with him in the same class. Looking at his aloof attitude, I had a bad feeling that the war at home would spread to school too. It wasn't just a headache! It was all because of Guan Sha's troublemaking. On the first day after Guan Sha transferred to our class, as soon as I got home, Tian Ai anxiously pulled me aside and asked, "How was it? How did Guan Sha do?" I hesitated for a moment before saying, "He's fine." "What do you mean by fine?" Tian Ai didn't understand. I could only tell the truth, "He didn't say a word all day." "Ah?! Then what's wrong with him?" "Maybe he's playing basketball," I said. "He rode his bike faster than me, if he wasn't playing ball, he should've been home by now." "But he doesn't know anyone to play with!" Tian Ai worriedly said, "Ran Ran, you have to help him more and get him to interact with others more."
