Chapter 9: The Flower in the Shade and the Green Beans of March
Article 11
When they finally arrived at the so-called "good place", Ning Xingguo almost fainted, it was just a temple, with incense swirling around, although it was winter, there were still many people coming to burn incense, and some even knelt down three steps at a time in the snow.
"What's the point of coming here?" Ning Xingguo stood at the gate of Xiyuan Temple, hesitating. "We don't believe in these things."
Kang Weiwei got angry, "You said you'd accompany me out to play, the Bodhisattva here is super effective. And there are also two large turtles released during the Ming dynasty, I've only heard about it before but never had the chance to come."
"Alright, let's go in, I give up on you." Ning Xingguo followed her into the temple.
The Xiyuan Temple is located on Liuyuan Road outside the city gate of Yangzhou, and was originally built during the Yuan Dynasty. It was initially named "Guiyuan Temple". During the Ming Dynasty's Jiajing period, the temple was converted into a residential garden by Xu Tai, who also established the Dongyuan Garden at the same time. The temple was later renamed "Xiyuan" (Western Garden). In 1635, during the Chongzhen period of the Ming Dynasty, the abbot Mulin changed the name to "Jiechuang Lüsi Temple" in order to promote the "Vinaya School". The term "jiechuang" means "flag", and refers to a temple that promotes Buddhist precepts as its guiding principle. During this time, the temple became one of the most famous Vinaya School temples in China.
Kang Mi's devout and meticulous chanting, Ning Xingguo watched her with interest, as if admiring a porcelain vase, both of them were in a daze.
As they walked in, the temple was indeed grand and majestic, with a serene Buddha statue, and also had garden features that made people feel the beauty of solemnity. In the midst of heavy snowfall, Kang Yu knelt down to worship the Bodhisattva, prostrating herself on the ground, her mouth murmuring prayers for a child with utmost sincerity. Then, she smiled expectantly at the four-faced Thousand-Handed Guanyin with a pink complexion. Ning Xingguo also followed suit and knelt down, sighing: Women always place their hopes in those intangible things.
At the Wishing Pond, that turtle has been over a hundred years old and weighs over 100 kilograms. It often floats to the surface of the water and plays with tourists. Although it was snowing, it's strange that the two big turtles saw Kang Yaoyao and immediately swam over.
"Ah, look, how cute." Kang MiMi pulled on Ning XingGuo's sleeve.
When hands touch hands, body temperature rises rapidly, four eyes meet, regardless of the surrounding rumors, born out of love is worry, born out of love is fear.
"The abbot beside him recited the Buddhist scriptures, 'Eliminate all obstacles to rebirth in the Pure Land, Namu Amitabha, Namo Avalokiteshvara... All things are empty reflections in the mirror, ultimately all phenomena are without phenomenon, Patron, take care."
Kang MiMi turned around to take a look, and the abbot was actually Xian Gu Lin Qi. He quickly let go of Ning XingGuo's hand, joined his hands together in greeting, "Abbot, what can I do for you?"
Qingfeng smiled and returned the courtesy, "I was just being too talkative, I hope you two gentlemen won't mind."
Ning Xingguo was somewhat curious and suddenly recited Buddhist scriptures to himself, wondering if there was something wrong with him. He hastily asked, "Please, Master, tell us in detail."
Qingfeng shook his head, "It's hard for ordinary people to cross over, never mind, just seek blessings on their own."
The monks in the temple began to chant, their voices echoing, and the two turtles also stood still, facing the direction of the temple gate. The snow grew heavier, and many incense-burning tourists started to leave, Ning Xingguo and Kang Mi also had the intention to go.
Those scriptures seem to be recited for them:
Brilliant and majestic, awe-inspiring and boundless. Like a blazing fire, there is none that can compare.
The sun and moon are like bright pearls, their light shining brightly, but all is hidden, like a gathering of ink.
The countenance of Tathagata, transcending worldly bounds. The great sound of Right Enlightenment, resonating throughout the ten directions.
Abstaining from worldly sounds, advancing in meditation, wisdom and majesty unparalleled, uniquely superior and rare.
Deeply pondering good thoughts, the ocean of all Buddha's teachings is exhaustively and thoroughly investigated to its utmost depths.
No ignorance, no craving, no anger; the World-Honored One is forever free from these. The majestic lion-like man has immeasurable spiritual virtues.
Great merits and virtues are vast, wisdom is profound and subtle, radiant majesty and dignity, shaking the universe.
May I become a Buddha, equal to the holy Dharma King. Transcend life and death, all attain liberation.
Giving, morality and patience, effort and meditation, these are the highest wisdom.
I vow to attain Buddhahood and universally practice this wish. All fears are transformed into great peace.
Suppose there were Buddhas as numerous as hundreds of thousands of millions, countless and numberless, like grains of sand.
Nourishing all things, is equal to all Buddhas, but it's not as good as seeking the Way, being firm and unwavering.
Like grains of sand, the worlds of all Buddhas are innumerable and countless.
Illuminating all with clarity, pervading all these countries, such is the vigorous progress, awe-inspiring and immeasurable.
It makes me a Buddha, the first in the land. Its crowd is wonderful, and the Taoist temple is extraordinary.
The country is like a muddy river, and there are no two equal things. I should be worried about it, and get rid of all troubles.
From all directions they come to be born, their minds joyful and pure, having arrived in our country, happy and at peace.
Fortunate Buddha's faith is clear, it is my true proof. Make a vow to him, with all one's might and will.
The Tathagata of the ten directions, with unobstructed wisdom, always causes this honored one to know my actions.
Even if I were to be reborn in a place of great suffering and hardship, I would still cultivate diligently and never give up.
……
After listening for a long time, the umbrella that Ning Xingguo was holding had already accumulated thick snowflakes on it. He shook it and said to Kang Mi, "Let's... go back, we've been out for too long, I'm afraid others will be suspicious."
Kang Mi nodded slightly, and the two of them left the temple together.
Although they flashed quickly when they saw Zhou Huijuan, they were still seen by the sharp-eyed Zhou Huijuan. She exclaimed in surprise, "Kang Miao Miao, Mr. Ning, how...".
There's no use hiding, so I'll just have to grit my teeth and go up. Ning Xingguo calmed his voice and said, "Zhou Huijuan, what a coincidence! I happened to see Kang Mi on the road too, and she didn't have an umbrella, so I sent her back to school."
Sometimes interpretation is just an excuse.
Kang Youyou reversed the roles of host and guest, "Where are you going?"
Zhou Huijuan's eyes were a bit flustered, "I, I'm going out."
Kang MiMi ignored her and said to Ning XingGuo, "The snow is falling heavily now, let's go back."
Ning Xingguo nodded and said goodbye to Zhou Huijuan.
