Chapter Thirty-Two
Midnight airport.
An Ran simply packed a suitcase and rushed to the airport. There is no direct flight from L City, so she had to land in S City first and then transfer. The earliest she can arrive home is tomorrow at 8 am.
She arrived just in time for the last flight. It was at 2am, which meant she still had to wait over two hours.
Su Anran pulled her luggage and headed to the waiting room.
The airport is brightly lit, as bright as daylight. The floor-to-ceiling windows reflect the dazzling lights inside, making it feel like a separate space. People come and go, the sound of voices is deafening, this place is also sleepless.
The phone in her hand buzzed and rang, she lowered her head to take a look, then quickly picked it up.
It's a call from Aunt Cui, who lives next door in L City. She has already arrived at the hospital to pay the bill and saw your mother. Tell her everything is fine, don't worry on the way, take it easy.
An Ran smiled and thanked him, lowering her head to see her own thin and lonely shadow, thinking of Su Mu who was alone in L City with no one to rely on, her nose felt a little sore.
When she was ill, he wasn't by her side, and even when she was hospitalized, the one keeping vigil and taking care of her wasn't him either.
Su Anran bit her lip, and due to the excessive force, her lower lip turned white. However, she seemed completely unaware of it, turning her head to look out the window at the dense, dark sky that was like a thick net covering everything, making even the air feel oppressive.
She stayed in City A... was it right or wrong? And for what reason?
After hanging up the phone, she tightly pinched the mobile phone that had been held by herself and was slightly hot in her palm, looked up at the upper part of the airport, and tried to squeeze back the tears that had reached the eye sockets.
A person who has been alone for too long already knows how to hide their vulnerability.
She wants to go home and stay by her mother's side, she doesn't want to be alone anymore.
She pulled her suitcase and continued walking forward with a good mood. The people in front of her were swaying, but she seemed to see an extremely familiar figure among the crowd.
But when she focused her eyes and looked again, where was Wen Jingfan's figure?
She raised her hand to cover her somewhat misty eyes, took a deep breath, and the air was cool. She suddenly inhaled, and the piercing chill made her cough uncontrollably.
Wen Jingfan's phone call came at this time. She was stunned for a moment and hesitated before picking up: "Hello?"
"It's alright." His voice was heavy with the unshakable chill of a deep winter night, and there was also a hint of fatigue: "I just got off the plane, I just saw your call to me."
"On the plane." An replied calmly and continued walking on the marble floor of the airport hall.
Wen Jingfan fell silent for a moment before lowering his voice and asking, "Is something wrong? Your voice doesn't sound right."
Is it really that obvious?
She casually covered her mouth, moved the phone a bit further away, cleared her throat to make sure everything was okay before bringing it back: "Nothing's wrong, what could be wrong with me? I just wanted to ask how you've been lately... but it seems like the timing isn't quite right, you're on a plane."
"Is that all?" He raised his tone slightly, as if smiling. There were a lot of people on his side, the background noise was loud and overlapping, but his clear voice remained distinct, as if he was nearby.
"So where are you now?"
She had just asked the question when she heard someone whispering to him, Wen Jingfan didn't avoid her, so that An Ran happened to hear the conversation between the two people clearly.
"Director Wen, are we going to SY company now or will you go back and rest first?"
Wen Jingfan hesitated for a moment, asked the time, and after hearing the answer from the person beside him, seemed to have hesitated again, then asked: "Are you at the hotel? If so, I'll go find you now."
He took a deep breath, his mind went blank for a moment, and then he replied, "No, I wasn't at the hotel."
Wen Jingfan detected a hint of resistance in her tone, and after hesitating for a moment, he said: "I'm currently in City A. I came back ahead of schedule... just to see you."
She hadn't even responded yet when she heard the voice on the other end as clear as if it were right next to her ear.
"Alright, I'm behind you."
An Ran's mind went blank, and she couldn't even speak coherently. Her lips trembled as she tried to open her mouth, but she didn't know what to say. She just stood there, holding her phone and turning around to look over...
Wen Jingfan stood not far away, next to a pillar, wearing a long black coat with two rows of exquisite gold buttons, the collar neatly folded, and inside was a suit of the same color. This outfit looked formal as if he had just come from some important occasion and boarded the plane directly.
His eyes and eyebrows were filled with a faint smile at this moment, his hand holding the phone had not been put down yet, very lightly and slowly he said to her: "So you're here."
His tone didn't have any particular skill, and even his voice was very flat, but because of his unique and pleasant timbre, it was the heavenly music that pulled her out of the abyss years ago. At this moment when she was about to fall into a desperate situation again, hearing him say "So you're here" in such a gentle and warm tone made the bitterness she had just managed to suppress surge up again.
This time the emotions came even more fiercely, she didn't even have time to suppress or hold back, and already felt the stinging pain at the tip of her nose and the warmth in her eye sockets.
She forced a smile at him and quickly wiped away the tears that had welled up in her eyes as she put away her phone.
Wen Jingfan was handing over something to his assistant beside him, and he didn't know if it was because he had seen her little movements, but even when he was handing over the task to his assistant, his gaze still fell on her body, not leaving for a moment.
He quietly shifted his footsteps, thinking whether he should go up and greet him before leaving... or...
She hadn't thought of a second option yet when Wen Jingfan already walked over here.
As he walked, the wind blew and lifted his clothes, but he seemed to be unaware of it, his footsteps were fast and steady. A pair of deep eyes reflected the lights in the airport, shining like stars in the night sky.
Suddenly felt at a loss for how to face him...
Obviously, she didn't do anything wrong to him. But seeing him walking towards her step by step, she suddenly felt a bit guilty and eager to cover up and escape...
She thought so and did so. Although her feet seemed to have taken root, when her thoughts dominated her actions, she still turned around quickly and walked away.
Before she could take a step forward, he had already taken several steps ahead and grabbed her wrist, holding it firmly: "Where are you running to?"
She blinked her eyes calmly, but felt even more embarrassed. Actually, just saying hello and going their separate ways... was the normal reaction, where did this guilty feeling come from?
"No...I didn't run..." Although she thought so, her subconscious answer was still a denial.
Wen Jingwen pursed his lips and gazed at her, fortunately he wasn't very fixated on the issue, releasing his hand, taking a step forward to stand in front of her, his eyes falling onto the luggage handle she was gripping: "Where are you going?"
Before Su An could even respond, he saw him frowning slightly and leaning in close.
Su An was startled by his actions, pursed her lips and took a step back. Seeing him frozen in place, she raised her hand to touch her own face and asked softly: "......what's wrong?"
Wen Jingfan didn't respond, his lips pursed tightly as he raised his hand to gently grasp her chin, his beautiful eyes staring straight at her, as if trying to see into her heart.
The piercing power of this gaze is too strong.
"Have you cried?" he asked.
She remained calm and stared at her own feet, without responding.
Wen Jingfan finally loosened his grip on her chin, and the two of them stood silently facing each other.
The airport had a boarding announcement, the mechanical female voice was warm and pleasant to listen to. The surrounding noise was constant, but only she and he stood in a quiet place, as if it were another space, out of the dust, yet standing in the dust.
He stood there for a moment, seemingly helplessly sighing and softly coaxed her: "Don't stand there like an idiot, go find a teahouse to sit for a while, okay?"
She calmly raised her eyes to look at him, neither saying it was good nor bad.
Wen Jingfan took it for granted and naturally took the suitcase from her hand, taking the lead in walking.
But he had just taken a step forward when he felt his sleeve being tugged by a tiny force, small enough to be negligible, yet existing with a strong presence.
He looked down at the hand grasping his sleeve, then turned around to see her hanging her head as before, her voice muffled: "My mom... is sick."
Wen Jingfan quietly looked at her, his face showing no great emotional fluctuations, but his heart felt as if it had been pinched by her voice, aching slightly.
She was afraid, her fingers clutching his sleeve were trembling imperceptibly, very lightly, but he felt it very clearly.
Her heart was suddenly touched, and the softness at the bottom of her heart was suddenly overturned, spreading wildly.
Wen Jingfan raised his hand and grasped hers, pulling it into his palm. Seeing her look up at him in surprise, he pointed to the tea seat not far away: "You wait for me there, don't leave."
Before Su Anran could react, he took a quick glance around and left swiftly. She stared at the direction he had gone in, still somewhat stunned - was Wen Jingfan going to accompany her back to L City?
Tea ceremony.
Wen Jingfan picked up the teacup and took a sip, casting a faint glance at Su Anran who was sitting across from her. Both of Su's hands were cradling the cup, and her entire face seemed to be buried in it, without having lifted her head once until now.
He finally couldn't help but chuckle and said: "Can you tell me specifically what's going on?"
An Ran was slightly drowsy from the hot coffee, and upon hearing this, she lifted her head, thinking to herself: You didn't even understand the situation before rushing off to buy tickets, now... you're only thinking of asking about the specific situation!
Her lips were scalded by the hot coffee, bright red and dripping with moisture. She probably felt uncomfortable, so she stuck out her tongue to lick it before saying: "My mom has high blood pressure, when she fainted and fell down there was no one around, she had a slight concussion."
Wen Jingyan's Adam's apple rolled slightly, and he casually avoided eye contact, lowered his head to take a sip of tea, cleared his throat before speaking: "Which hospital?"
"The First People's Hospital." She said, her voice slightly lower: "When I received the call...I didn't know what to do, then..."
She didn't continue speaking after that, but Wen Jingfan roughly understood. That phone call was probably made around that time.
Many many years later, Wen Jingfan still couldn't help but feel grateful when he thought back to that time, grateful that it was so coincidental - that he hadn't missed her at that time.
If I hadn't called her after getting off the plane, if we had missed each other at the airport at this time, it would have been a lifelong regret to rub shoulders in the crowd.
He gazed at her through the swirling white mist, his eyes filled with emotions she couldn't understand. But they were warm and gentle, like a clear and smooth jade, firmly drawing her in.
Before she could dodge, he said softly and soothingly, "I'll go with you, it's okay."
His palm was scalded by the coffee cup, and he looked up at him. His eyes were deep and quiet, losing their usual calmness, as if they could be touched.
At this moment, her eyes had a soothing power that calmed people's hearts. As she looked at him, she gradually became infatuated.
The night before she left the temple, it was a terrible night, so bad that it made people panic, and the deep-seated fear burst out like a dormant monster.
He stayed with her, in the faint candlelight that could be blown out by a strong gust of wind at any time, and quietly looked at her. Then, he smiled reassuringly at her and said: "I'll stay with you, don't worry, you're not alone."
That night, she sank into a dream, with warm candlelight and handsome young men.
He was with her.
She would believe anything he said.
Everything will be alright.
