Chapter 28: Ending Oneself

  Chapter 28 End Yourself

Chen Jian called out Chen Da's name several times, but there was no response again. His older brother had really left this time. He faced Chen Tong and fell silent for half a moment: "Tong'er, I'm sorry, I've been hiding it from you all these years." To make up for the mistakes he made back then, he and Xiu didn't have any more children. He always treated Chen Tong as his own biological son, and even handed over all the family business he had worked hard to build to him to manage early on.

Originally, Chen Tong thought it was his father being strict with him. During university, his father forced him to return home for two days every month to familiarize himself with the business and meet some of the company's leaders and employees. Watching his classmates use their free time to go out and have fun, he had once been puzzled in his heart, but now it seems that his father's guilt had made him want to pass on the family business to him as soon as possible.

Even if he did that now, what's the use? Everything can't be undone. Chen Da, his own biological father could forgive him, but Chen Tong himself couldn't let go.

But then he thought about it from childhood to adulthood, although he was strict with himself, but he was extremely concerned. He still vaguely remembered the sudden high fever after the college entrance examination ended. In fact, he didn't need to stay in the hospital all the time, and he lived in a high-end ward with professional doctors taking turns to care for him 24 hours a day. However, he insisted on watching over him personally. It took a week to be discharged from the hospital, but as soon as he was discharged, he fell ill again.

For a moment, Chen Tong's mind was in a mess and he didn't know what to do next.

"Help me up," Chen Jian said, but there was no response from his son. Chen's expression fell.

Watching Chen Jian hobble out of the door, Chen Tong's mouth twitched but ultimately remained silent.

Tian Qi never thought that the truth of the matter would be like this, involving such a big family feud. To say who was most affected, it was still President Chen. To some extent, hadn't he acknowledged his father's killer as his father for several decades? Although this person was his own uncle.

"Didn't Old Master Chen get into trouble for killing someone back then?" asked the fatty when they returned to the west wing.

Tian Qi shook his head, "This is actually easy to explain. At that time, it was a chaotic and turbulent period, people were struggling to survive, and death was nothing out of the ordinary. What institution would have been in charge of such things? Even if there was one, they wouldn't have been able to handle it. Old Man Chen could have just made up any excuse and gotten away with it."

The fat boy nodded, and indeed it was this kind of reason.

"But there must be one person who doesn't believe."

"You're talking about Chen Zhongren, right?" Qiu Shen said.

"That's right, if I'm not mistaken, Chen Zhongren is that old man we met before!" Tian Qi said with certainty.

The next day, Old Man Chen left the house as soon as it was light outside. A bodyguard followed behind him, carrying a bag full of paper money and hell notes. However, he wasn't going to find Chen Zhongren, but instead went to the ancestral tomb of the family. He stopped in front of a grave mound.

This tomb is different from others, it's a large semi-circular shape, in comparison, this tomb was built more luxuriously, it was almost all of Old Man Chen's family property back then.

In front of the tomb stood a stele, on which the words were somewhat worn out due to age and could hardly be seen clearly, but upon closer inspection, it was still possible to make out that they read "The Tomb of Big Brother Chen Da".

"Put down the bag and go back, don't wait for me." Old Man Chen instructed.

"But Mr. Chen told me to follow you and then go back with you," the bodyguard behind him said awkwardly.

"I'm fine, you can go back. I don't want to repeat myself again." Mr. Chen's tone became somewhat stern, and the bodyguard had no choice but to turn around and leave. He didn't know what happened last night, he couldn't ignore what President Chen said, but he also had to listen to Mr. Chen. After some consideration, he decided to stand not far from Mr. Chen and wait, in case something unexpected happened and he could discover it and rush over in time.

"Big brother, there's no one else here now, just the two of us. I want to have a chat with you and talk about what's on my mind," said Old Man Chen as he burned paper money. "Xiu is a good girl, but do you know that I actually knew her before you did? We've had feelings for each other since long ago. However, her parents suddenly passed away, and before they died, her father entrusted her to your care. Our parents passed away early, so we two brothers relied on each other for survival. Back then, I was still young, and it was all thanks to you that I could go to school - you took care of me and made sacrifices for me. You worked so hard every day, and because of me, you never married. How could I bear to say something that would make you give Xiu up to me? I know that if I said it, you would definitely agree." Old Man Chen's eyes were filled with tears as he looked back on the past.

"Later, you originally planned to run this cargo and then come back to marry Xiu, but you had an accident. You know, when I heard the news at that time, I felt like the sky was falling down. Fortunately, Xiu kept comforting me. So I... couldn't help it and... what happened next you already know. I thought all of this was fate." Chen Jian looked up at the sky, recalling everything that had happened back then.

"But all that doesn't matter anymore, big brother. In short, I've wronged you. Wait for me, little brother, I'll come down and keep you company!" Chen Jian wiped away his tears and pulled out a knife from his clothes.

"Big brother, do you still remember? This knife, it's the same one that's been hanging on the wall all along. Back then, I accidentally pushed you in a moment of panic, and your head hit this very knife, which is how you died. Today, I'll use this knife to end my own life. Although this day has come a bit late."

Chen Jian knew that the bodyguard would not go far and was definitely watching him from a certain direction behind his back. To prevent him from discovering, he held the knife in a low position, so that when looking from behind, there would be no discovery, only an old man burning paper in front of the grave.

"Dad!" Just as the old man raised his knife and was about to stab himself in the chest, a person suddenly rushed out from behind the grave and snatched the knife from Old Man Chen's hand.

"Dad, why must you do this? I knew you weren't that kind of person. There must be some other reason behind this!" Chen Tong didn't sleep all night after such a sudden event, no one could sleep. He had actually forgiven Chen Jian, believing that the person who raised him for so many years wouldn't do something as treacherous as he did back then without a good reason. The truth proved that his trust wasn't misplaced.

"Brother, I...". If Chen Tong had forgiven him yesterday, perhaps Chen Jian wouldn't have chosen this path. But seeing the desperation in Chen Tong's eyes last night, he knew he was beyond hope and wanted to end his life quickly to atone for his sins.

"Dad, let's just drop it and let everything pass. If we have to blame someone, let's blame the heavens!" Chen Tong hugged his father tightly, and all the grievances and resentments were resolved cleanly.

"Have you cried enough? If you've cried enough, then get up and come with me. Let Chen Da rest in peace!" At some point, many people had gathered around the two of them. Chen Zhongren, that old man, Tian Qi, Chou Shen, and Pangzi were all standing beside them, but Bao Gua was nowhere to be seen. He must have been blocked by a few people and not allowed to come over. After all, family scandals shouldn't be made public, and it's not good for the subordinates to know too much.

"Brother Chen, I'm ashamed to see you like this. I also wanted to go and take a look at your place, but I didn't have the face to do so. What did you mean by 'entering the earth as a peaceful soul'?" With Chen Tong's support, Chen Jian stood up.

"Alright, Chen Da has already appeared in my dream last night and told me everything. Since he's forgiven you, let's just drop it. Anyway, just follow me." Chen Zhongren turned around and left, and the crowd had no choice but to follow him.

"Tianqi, what did he mean by that just now?" Fatso asked, deliberately slowing down a step and pulling Tianqi along.

"I don't know either, but I should be able to make an educated guess," Tian Qi said.

"What is it? Tell me quickly, Brother!" Fatso urged impatiently.

"We'll know when we get there," Tian Qi quickened his pace and caught up with the person in front.

The fat boy looked unhappy, but could only follow along.

"What? You're saying Chen Da's body is in this house?" Fatso asked in surprise, and everyone present showed a shocked expression, except for Tian Qi and Chou Shen.

Chen Zhongren also took a glance at the two of them, seeing that their expressions didn't change much, apparently they had already guessed it. He felt even more affection towards the two.

"You two tell me, where exactly should Chen Da's body be buried in the house?" Chen Zhongren wanted to test Tian Qi and Qiu Shen.

"If I'm right, it should be due west, and the body was buried upright, wasn't it?" Tian Qi thought for a moment before saying.

"That's right, young man has two brushes!" Chen Zhongren praised.

"But I still have a question, why haven't these corpses rotted after so many years?" Tian Qi continued.

Tian Qi finished speaking, Chen Zhongren looked at Tian Qi's expression changed again, from earlier approval to some surprise, this kid really knew a lot.

"You'll know the reason later," said Chen Zhongren with a smile.
