Chapter 27: An Unusual Guest
"How can this curse be lifted?"
"The person who found Xiaogui is the only one who can untie it."
"Found the person who cast the spell?" I sat down beside my older sister, lost in thought. Easy to say, hard to do. From May 26th until today, this period of my life that feels like an eternity, I've only seen these two brothers a total of 5 or 6 times, yet they keep interfering with my and my sister's lives time and again. Clearly living in modern civilized society, we can't even control our own destiny, being haunted by the lingering presence of two people with unknown backgrounds. How much do I know about them? How am I supposed to find that person who cast the spell? Even if this Lei Xiaosu knows how to find him, can I trust him? But my sister is in this state now, and if I don't believe him, what should I do myself?
"I don't know how to believe you," I said frankly, staring into his eyes. "We don't want to be used by others anymore, we just want to go back to a normal life."
He let out a sigh and sat down on the windowsill. "I know it's hard for you to accept reality, and all I can say is that I'm very sorry about the current state of things..."
He was speaking when the door was pushed open. We both shifted our gaze over there, and the newcomer was carrying a basket of fruit and waved at us two.
"What brings you here, Officer He?" I asked in surprise.
"Can't I come to see your sister?" He brought a cheerful expression, like an icebreaker, and eased the stiff atmosphere in this room. "Last time the school insisted on expelling you, your sister cried bitterly, it was me who asked the principal to intervene with the school to keep your student status."
Haha, this sentence is really cleverly phrased. At first glance, it seems like he's saying he helped me keep my student status, but the key point is actually "your sister cried so much". My older sister really does have a way with men, even lying in her sickbed she's still got guys falling for her!
I took the fruit basket from his hand and accompanied him with a smile: "Thank you for coming all the way to see my sister."
"What a coincidence! What a coincidence!" he said with a chuckle, "And here's Xiaoshu too?"
"Oh, I'm on my way too."
"Right, Xiaoyu is going to the bureau this afternoon to assist with the investigation, and you can get your mail back in two days."
"Thank you, Officer He, I'll go get it as soon as possible."
"No need to be polite. I have a question that has been puzzling me and I don't know if it's okay to ask now that you two are both here."
I looked at Li Xiao Shu, she frowned and didn't say a word. So I took the lead, bravely and fearlessly answering: "May I ask."
"That afternoon, Li Xiaoshu was in Germany for an exchange. How did you end up running to Li Xiaoshu's home? Did you two know each other before?"
Uh, this is probably the one question that both of us are least willing to answer. From Lixiaoshu's perspective, he and Lixiaohao have some secrets that normal people can't understand. From my perspective, no one wants to believe a person who was sent to a mental hospital talking about ghosts and monsters, and I don't want to insist on those "truths" that might send me back to the mental hospital again.
When Officer He asked this question, both I and Li Xiaosu fell silent. The room was very quiet, and even the sound of a needle falling to the ground could be heard.
Suddenly, Li Xiaoshu spoke up: "Right, we are good friends. My family received a batch of new stamps and Xiao Yu wanted to take a look first, so he went alone. Didn't expect an accident to happen."
His words completely caught me off guard. One second ago, he was just a stranger I had only met two or three times, and I even had reason to hate him to the bone; one second later, we became good friends!
