Chapter 19: The Mysterious Package
Wen Shu took out a few more magazines and started looking for Hei Xue's story. In less than half a day, she found another Huang Banxian.
One morning, Huang Banshan was tidying up and preparing for bed when he suddenly heard a knock at the door. He opened it to find a burly man standing outside, covered in injuries, holding a bundle. Seeing Huang Banshan open the door, the big man fell to his knees with a thud and handed over the bundle. Huang Banshan was taken aback at first, but took the bundle and opened it to find it contained a pile of paper money and paper clothes.
Huang Banshan was puzzled, only to see the big man struggling to take out a silver ingot from his chest, saying it was for Huang Banshan, asking him to help keep an eye on the package. Five days later, someone would come to pick it up. If the person who came was fierce and violent, he would burn the package, if the person who came was elegant and polite, he would give the package to him. Finally, the big man said that his family of eighteen people's lives were all in this package, asking Huang Banshan to take good care of it. After finishing speaking, the big man left with a stumble.
Huang Banshen took the package and studied it carefully for half a day, only to find that the paper money and clothes inside were no different from ordinary ones. A doubt arose in his mind - why would the big fellow pay such a high price to have him keep this package?
On the fifth day, Huang Banshan didn't take a step out of his house, waiting for someone to come and collect the package. At noon, he heard the sound of knocking on the door. Huang Banshan sat calmly on the altar, listening as the knocking started slow and gentle, with a rhythmic beat, but gradually grew faster and more intense, until finally, the person kicked the door with their foot. As the kicking grew louder, Huang Banshan pulled out the incense burner from under the bed, took the package, lit it on fire, and burned it. A wisp of blue smoke drifted out of the house, and the knocking suddenly stopped. Then came a man's sigh, followed by complete silence.
After a long time, the sun set and the sky gradually darkened. Huang Banshen estimated that the person outside the door should have left, so he got up to open the door. Outside, there was indeed no one. However, just as he was about to turn around and enter the house, he found that his family's door had spots all over it. Holding a lantern to take a closer look, it seemed like bloodstains, but because the light was too dim, it couldn't be seen clearly.
The next morning, Huang Banshan's first thing to do after getting out of bed was to open the door and take a look. Sure enough, there were prints all over the door, as if someone had punched it with their fist, leaving behind bloodstains. However, those prints were all black in color, yet they clearly carried a strong smell of blood.
Huang Banshan had been thinking about this matter in his heart. One day, when he went to the temple to chat with the monk, he told the monk about this strange thing. The monk listened and took out two paper charms, telling him to wet the first one with blood and stick it on the door. If that person wanted to come back for revenge, they would be burned by the original energy when knocking on the door. Huang Banshan returned home and followed the monk's instructions, using a copper knife to cut his finger, squeezing out blood onto the paper charm, and then sticking the bloody charm on the door.
That night, someone came to knock on the door. This time was completely different from last time, it started with a strong momentum like a stormy rain. The door shook violently, as if it was about to be pushed down, and every shake was accompanied by a loud roar. Huang Banshan took out the copper dagger and held it in his hand, standing steadily beside the altar. He took out the second paper charm from the waist bag, cut his finger and dripped blood on it, placed it in the center of the altar, and burned it with fire. Another puff of green smoke floated out, the door's shaking slowed down, and the knocking sound became lighter and lighter, until finally there was no movement outside the house.
