Chapter 35: A Shocking Explosion (1)
"There are four rooms in total, with ten devils in each room, use guns and be quick!"
Li Baoguo nodded, took off the other things on his body and put them in the gate cave. Li Xuerong and Li Xuetu had already arrived at the door and nodded to both of them. Yang Jiu and Li Baoguo quietly slipped into the house, the devils were sleeping very sweetly, some devils' teeth were chattering loudly, and some devils even talked in their sleep.
Yang Jie and Li Baoguo returned, both of them simultaneously holding a machine gun in their hands, handing it over to the Li brothers behind them. After picking up their own equipment, the two men moved forward again, Nan Wei lightly climbed onto the roof, coughing slightly, indicating that there was someone on the roof.
Yang Jie came to the house, and found that on the rooftop of a house across the courtyard, there was a machine gun with its muzzle pointing this way. On the rooftops in front of and behind the house, there were devils' sentries, and it was unknown how many devils were below.
Slowly backing down, Yang Jie replaced his magazine with a new one. "I'll go up to the rooftop from the front street, you provide cover here and keep an eye on the sentry in the distance. If things get tough, open fire and shoot them dead, then launch a strong attack. Get all of them over there and hide inside that big house's gate, prepare for battle."
Yang Jie finished speaking, and quietly ran towards the main street along the alley. Li Baoguo checked his machine gun, submachine gun, and grenades one by one, then quietly climbed over the wall and entered the combat position.
Yang Jie took a look at the entrance of the hutong and was stunned for a moment. The gate of the Shirakawa command post was filled with Japanese guards, some holding guns on high alert, others chatting and laughing with each other. The machine gun bunker in front was brightly lit. Yang Jie turned around and entered the courtyard, sticking to the south wall root, quietly reaching the north house, climbed onto the roof of the north house, only to find that there were no Japanese sentries on the rooftops in this area. He sneaked into the opposite hutong, at which point the voices of the Japanese soldiers became very clear. On the rooftop of the second courtyard, Japanese sentries walked back and forth. Yang Jie needed to take out the sentries on the rooftops of the second and third courtyards before he could blast through the wall and enter the Shirakawa command post.
Yang Jie sized up the main house, which wasn't very tall. The high house across from the Yin family's home blocked it out quite thoroughly, meaning that the sentry on the east side of the Yin family's house couldn't see what was going on here. Yang Jie climbed up onto the roof via the ladder leaning against the eaves, making neither too much nor too little noise. The sentry and even the guards in the courtyard thought Yang Jie was one of their own. When the sentry walked to the other end of the house, he found Yang Jie sitting next to the machine gunner, chatting with him in a friendly manner. As the sentry approached, he noticed that Yang Jie had cigarettes in his hand and was wearing an officer's uniform, but his face was turned away from the moonlight, making it impossible to see clearly, especially since the moon had already reached the treetops. The sentry saluted, then sat down with a smile, as if hearing the sound of his own neck being snapped.
Yang Jiong dodged and weaved, landing on the roof of the third courtyard. Nan Wei Ren was so tense that his hands were shaking, after all, they were surrounded by enemies, and if things went wrong, they would have to launch a strong attack, which would be difficult to predict. Nan Wei Ren's composure was top-notch, not to mention Li Xue Rong and the others. Li Xue Rong even suspected that Yang Jiong's actions this time were suicidal.
But Yang quickly arranged the enemy's sentry on this side of the house roof, one seemed to be sitting and smoking, one seemed to be lying down guarding the machine gun.
Everyone has arrived at the courtyard.
"The devils seem to be having a meeting, with fifty guards in two rows inside the courtyard and over a hundred at the gate. The situation in the back courtyard is unclear. Li Ying, Xu De, you go to the alley entrance and take charge of the devils at the main gate, use strong firepower. Li Xue-rong, Li Xue-hu are responsible for charging into the courtyard and attacking the devils at the main gate. Hu Yi, Liu Jian are in charge of any devils that may appear in the back courtyard. Gao Jun-ping is responsible for placing explosives on Nan Wei-ren's roof. I, Li Bao-guo, will lead the attack on the devil's headquarters."
Yang Jie carefully used a Swiss Army knife to scrape off the lime from the wall, and with force inserted the knife into the gap between the bricks. It was no wonder it was a world-famous brand - in just three or five tries, he managed to pry out one of the green bricks. Fortunately, there were flowers and trees nearby to conceal them. When the hole was large enough for a person to pass through, Yang Jie made a gentle gesture, leading the way through first, and hiding behind a flowerbed. Then it was Li Baoguo's turn, followed by others. In about one minute's time, Li and his brothers felt as if they had been through an eternity, being their first time participating in this kind of battle.
Yang Jie suddenly stood up, and the grenade in his hand was thrown at the brightly lit living room without hesitation. Li Baoguo almost fired at the same time. The two of them casually threw away their grenade launchers and exchanged them for submachine guns, sweeping towards the living room wildly. Behind them, the Li brothers' grenades exploded among the devils in the courtyard, followed by the roar of machine guns. Then they rushed to the gate, occupied it, and began to sweep all visible enemies. Li Xuer was outside, and Li Xuetu was inside. When Li Ying's and Xu De's grenades exploded among the devils, Li Xuer had just arrived at the gate, hugged his submachine gun, and fired a burst, eliminating the devils in the machine gun fort. He then jumped into the fort, pulled out a heavy machine gun, and opened fire. The devils at the gate were temporarily sandwiched between two attacks, and more than half of them were eliminated. The remaining devils retreated to the opposite alley, and those suppressed by Li Xuer couldn't lift their heads.
Yang Jie and Li Baoguo stood at the door of the living room, with their right hands holding guns and their left hands throwing hand grenades everywhere. After a minute, they rushed in and started shooting at the Japanese devils who were still alive. Then, they collected the maps, telegraph codes and other strategic secrets from the Japanese devils' place, and retreated out of the house.
"Fall back!" Yang Jie shouted to Hu Yi and Liu Jian, who were exchanging fire with the devils charging from behind. Li Baoguo's machine gun swept over, suppressing the devils under the suddenly intensified firepower. Nan Weiren jumped down from the house, switched to a grenade launcher, and fired a shell at the devils. The six men retreated towards the door. As soon as they reached the door, Gao Junping's bombs began to explode one after another, and the explosions filled the entire courtyard. Yang Jie and Li Baoguo led the way, Nan Weiren and Gao Junping covered the rear, while the others in between provided support at any time, rushing out of the village. Due to the suddenness of the incident and the fact that the whole process took less than five minutes, the devils had not reacted when Yang Jie and his men broke out of the village.
The outcome was beyond Yang's expectation. Except for Yano who escaped to the back toilet, all the others including three regimental commanders and their battalion commanders as well as staff officers were shot dead. When Yano heard the gunfire and explosions, his first reaction was to lie down on the ground, not even caring if he was still in the toilet. The experienced him knew that such intense gunfire was the hallmark of the former Huaiyang Special Warfare Team, and his bodyguard lay outside the toilet with his hands covering his head, hiding behind a clump of flowers. When the gunfire subsided, Yano had just gotten up when an even more violent explosion started to come in succession, and the long-neglected toilet finally could not withstand such intense vibrations, trembling and collapsing. Fortunately, the collapse of the toilet was not too sudden, and Yano discovered that he still had time to climb out, but unfortunately, his leg was pressed under a pile of bricks, and his head was also hit by flying bricks. The bodyguard rushed over as soon as the explosion stopped, and upon seeing the collapsed toilet, he shouted loudly: "General, General!"
Yano responded with a grunt from under the brick, "I'm here." The confused guard officer surrounded Yano's head and anxiously asked, "General, are you okay?"
"Nonsense! Hurry up and move the bricks!" Yano shouted at the guard while stopping him from calling for help. Although he was pinned under the bricks, his leg wasn't seriously injured, it just hurt so much that he stumbled with every step, and his head was wrapped in gauze. The front yard had already been bombed beyond recognition, a mess of rubble. Among the rubble, there were scattered fragments of Japanese soldiers' dismembered bodies, which looked unreal in the dim moonlight. Just five minutes ago, it was still full of life, but now it had turned into a hellish scene. Yano rubbed his eyes hard and even pinched himself secretly to see if he was dreaming.
Is it over? What battle plan?! What secret?! Ah?! It's just a broken tile!
