Chapter 34: Reinforcements

Mustard gas is a blistering agent that affects the eyes, respiratory tract and skin. It can cause redness, swelling, blisters and peeling of the skin. Eye contact can lead to conjunctivitis, corneal opacity or ulceration. Inhalation of vapors or mist can damage the upper respiratory tract, and high concentrations can cause lung damage. Severe damage is characterized by necrotic inflammation of the pharynx, larynx, trachea and bronchial mucosa. Systemic poisoning symptoms include general malaise, fatigue, headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, depression, somnolence and central inhibition and parasympathetic nervous system excitation. Severe poisoning can lead to death.
During the invasion of China, the Japanese army used this toxic gas many times, causing great harm to a large number of Chinese soldiers and civilians. Qin Yang had only seen some relevant introductions in some materials before, but he did not expect to see it so soon, and even experience it personally.
Through the wet towel covering his mouth and nose, Qin Yang still smelled a strong pungent smell like garlic, and felt a dry and suffocating sensation in his chest. Although he closed his eyes, his eyelids and body still felt a burning pain like being scalded by fire, as if sulfuric acid had been poured on him.
Qin Yang exerted himself to stretch his body open, tightly hugging Dai'er in his arms, and letting his clothes and body wrap her inside. This could alleviate some of the harm from the toxic gas for her.
Breathing in the suffocating smell, experiencing a feeling as if being burned on fire, and hearing the unguarded soldiers rolling and wailing on the ground beside her ears, Dai'er felt as if she was in hell. If it wasn't for Qin Yang's thick arms giving her the last bit of stability, she didn't know if she would have collapsed mentally.
Is this war? Is war so cruel?
Dai'er's mind was filled with this idea, and she didn't want to think about anything else, nor could she. If it wasn't for the one she liked being here, she would have escaped far, far away from here.
At the time of the gas spread, it was not necessary to worry about the Japanese army taking advantage of the attack. Although the Japanese biochemical troops, such as the notorious 731 unit and the mysterious 516 unit, were equipped with some gas masks and protective clothing, ordinary units like the Hattori and Suzuki Mixed Brigade did not have access to these equipment.
After a while, the mustard gas finally dissipated slowly, and the battlefield returned to normal. The soldiers who had taken protective measures also removed the towels from their mouths and panted heavily.
Qin Yang let go of Dai Er and stood up.
As soon as she loosened the towel, Dai'er felt something in her stomach rising up, and she couldn't help but squat there with both hands covering her mouth, retching dryly.
The towel didn't smell very good, and earlier because of excessive tension she hadn't noticed it. Now that the crisis was over, Dai'er felt her internal organs protesting. Although she knew this wasn't good in front of Qin Yang, a girl's habit of loving cleanliness still made her unable to control herself.
Qin Yang looked at Dai'er squatting there, not paying attention, thinking that the training he received in the special forces was many times more cruel than this. He remembered vomiting all his food out, but to maintain his physical strength, he gritted his teeth and picked up what he had vomited and ate it again.
The special forces are so strong because of the cruel training they have experienced, and because they possess superhuman skills and perseverance that far surpasses that of ordinary people.
"Go on, spit it out and you'll feel better!" Qin Yang patted gently on Dai Er's back to comfort her.
Dai'er forced herself to stand up, suppressing the urge to vomit, and looked around, feeling a bit more balanced in her mind.
"It seems I'm not the only one who can't take it, so many people are vomiting with me!"
Everyone on the scene was squatting on the ground, struggling with their own stomachs, and not everyone's nerves were as tough as Qin Yang's.
He Jiguang walked over with a pale face, looking like he had just settled something.
"How many casualties?" Qin Yang asked.
"It's okay, you reminded us in time. Although a few warriors didn't take good precautions and got injured, most people were lucky enough to escape!" He Qigong said, still feeling frightened after the fact. He hadn't expected the enemy's methods to be so vicious.
Qin Yang's mind was put at ease. Now they had fewer people in their hands to begin with, if they were to lose another half, the remaining battle would be impossible to fight.
"Get the wounded sent to the rear immediately for emergency treatment!" Qin Yang reminded.
As for this toxic gas, Qin Yang still had some understanding of it. Although people had taken simple protective measures, their bodies were also damaged to a certain extent, especially those who were injured, and they might become blind or suffer from diseases that would accompany them for the rest of their lives. However, this was also inevitable because there was no specific antidote for mustard gas.
The footsteps of the mountain mouth outside the ghost child have sounded again, accompanied by the rumbling sound of tank tracks rolling over stones and the crisp sound of horseshoes hitting rocks.
Everyone on the battlefield understood that this time the devils had made a big bet and were ready to wipe them out once and for all.
Qin Yang stood in the trench, looking at Dai Er on his left and then at He Ji Mo on his right, only to find that both of them were also staring at him.
There was no fear or panic in the eyes of the three people, only a deep reluctance.
"Qin Yang, it seems like this time is really going to be a heroic sacrifice!"
"Lao He, a real man shouldn't be afraid of death, besides, we've already killed so many little devils, it's worth the cost!"
"Dai Er, are you afraid?"
"Qin big brother, with you by my side, I'm not afraid of anything!"
Three men grasped their own weapons, calmly gazing at the Japanese soldiers who appeared at the mountain pass and were charging towards the position from a distance. The warriors of the 29th Army behind them all calmly gripped the large knives in their hands.
When people really face death, they are no longer afraid.
Wang Changhai took out the tattered 29th Army flag from the warrior's hand on the mountain road, hung it on a flagpole, and then fiercely stabbed it into the nearby bunker.
In the north wind, the military flag stained with gunpowder and blood fluttered in the air, with a few big black characters on it floating with the flag.
Looking at the increasingly close Japanese soldiers who seemed as numerous as ants, everyone was already prepared to fight to the death.
Something unexpected happened!
On the right flank of the Japanese army, in a thicket near Shan Kou, a sudden burst of submachine gun fire rang out, accompanied by the sweep of the submachine guns, and the machine gunners behind the Japanese troops fell to the ground one after another, causing chaos among the Japanese.
Several figures emerged from the jungle, moving swiftly while firing and using submachine guns and hand grenades alternately, flexible and varied, making it impossible for the Japanese army to grasp their intentions.
The sudden change left the people on the scene stunned. But soon Qin Yang recognized that the leader was actually Tie Tou, who should have returned to the command center, and behind him were the special warfare team members he had trained with his own hands.
"Qin big brother, it's Tie Tou and them!" Dai'er exclaimed in a low voice, both excited and worried.
People keep rushing out of the jungle, behind Qin Yang's special combat team is a soldier wearing gray-blue National Revolutionary Army uniform, but it's too far to see the number.
"What's with this iron-headed guy, where did he find these reinforcements?"
Qin Yang and He Jiwen were both puzzled!
More and more people rushed out of the jungle, soon intercepting the Japanese soldiers who were rushing to the position, and the two sides fought together. The attacking Japanese army saw that there were still troops pouring out of the jungle, knowing that this attack had failed, so they retreated while fighting, withdrawing from the mountain pass.
Those soldiers did not overdo it either, they just chased to the mountain pass and then withdrew.
Tie Tou rushed towards Qin Yang in front, shouting while running: "Officer, I've brought the reinforcements for you!"
Qin Yang and others rushed forward, asking: "Where did you move from? Didn't the team already have no one to spare?"
Tie Tou wiped the sweat from his bald head and pointed behind him: "Instructor, look who that is?"
Qin Yang followed Tie Tou's finger and saw Zhao Dengyu's tall figure among a group of officers walking towards the array.
"Older brother Zhao!"
Qin Yang!
Two people's hands were tightly clasped together.
Although they were apart for a short time, many things happened during this period, and Qin Yang was reborn several times, walking in front of the god of death multiple times. When they met again, it was only natural that they felt extremely close.
"Dai Er Jie!"
On the other side, Xiao Yue and several others also hugged Dai Er together.
Zhao Dengyu and Qin Yang, He Jishu met after the ceremony, smiled and said to Qin Yang: "Let me introduce you, this is the commander of the 113th Brigade of the 29th Army, Tong Zeguang. They are respectively the commanders of the 226th Regiment of the 113th Brigade, Li Jiushi, Ning Dianwu, Commander of the 227th Regiment and Qi Guangyuan, Commander of the 228th Regiment! This time it was the army commander who let them come to support us."
Tong Ze Guang was of medium build, with a round face and a rustic smile, looking like an easy-going person. In contrast, the three battalion commanders beside him were all tall and robust, with fierce expressions, clearly seasoned military men.
After listening to Zhao Dengyu's introduction, Qin Yang stepped forward and saluted the four of them with a military salute. After all, he was nominally a counselor of the 109th Brigade, so it was natural for him to pay his respects first.
"No need to be polite, we've already heard about your exploits from Old Zhao. You're the one who made great contributions to our 29th Army, indeed a true General Tiger!" Tong Zeguang didn't wait for Qin Yang to speak up, he was obviously a straightforward and talkative person.
Li Jiuxi and the other two team leaders also looked at Qin Yang with a smile, their eyes full of approval.
Qin Yang smiled slightly, his expression looking very calm: "Commander Tong, you're overpraising me. Those were all achieved through the collective blood and sweat of everyone's fierce battle. I didn't do anything, if we must talk about credit, it should be the credit of all 29 officers and soldiers!"
Tong Ze Guang nodded in approval, he didn't expect Qin Yang to be so calm and composed at such a young age.
"Qin Yang, come with Ji Mou and me back to the command center. The 113th Division led by Tong will take over the defense. You guys should get some rest too, these past few days have exhausted you!"
Qin Yang and He Jiguo saw that the position was held, and new troops had taken over the position, so they nodded in agreement.
Four days and thirteen hours after leaving the command post, Qin Yang finally returned to the command department and back to the special warfare team's camp. Entering the tent, Qin Yang fell onto the bed and immediately entered dreamland!
He's too tired!
