Change of parents

The New Legend of Yue Fei

  Change of parents

It is said: A good official has difficulty judging family affairs. Indeed it's true.

I have been a parent for over 20 years, and due to my recklessness, I have made many mistakes at home. Several times, my wife complained that I was a dictator, making decisions on my own without consulting others. Indeed, this is true, what can I say?

In order to build a happy and harmonious family, I had no choice but to delegate power, appointing my wife as the 'Prime Minister of Home Affairs'.

Although my wife is a woman, she has the talent of a man. From the moment she took charge, she has been making profits and eliminating evils, working diligently to govern. In more than a year, she has turned an originally gloomy family into one that is thriving and prosperous. Neighbors, relatives, and friends all praise my wife as ' resourceful, capable, virtuous and gentle.'

Although I admire my wife's ability to handle things and respect her character, I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, I'm delighted that our family business is thriving and our home life is harmonious. On the other hand, I worry that her reputation is growing louder, her prestige higher, and her power greater, which may eventually make my position as head of the household redundant, and who knows when I'll be ousted.

As expected, recently, several dolls 'jointly petitioned', unanimously requesting to 'change their parents'.

"It's really a mess, from the time of Pangu creating heaven and earth, through the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors to the present day, China has had thousands of years of civilized history. In which dynasty or generation was it not men who took on the role of family leaders? You brazenly propose 'electing family leaders', isn't that 'committing a great taboo under heaven' and 'making a mockery of the world'? I scolded in a stern tone, using the voice of a family leader."

"Dad, you often say that Yao yielded to Shun because of Shun's virtues; and Shun yielded to Yu because of Yu's achievements in controlling the flood. Mom is good at managing the household, making money, and has both virtues and talents. Can't you follow the example of Yao and Shun, and yield to her with courtesy?" The eldest spoke eloquently.

"It's a rule that men should be in charge of the household, and it has always been this way since ancient times. How can I break this rule and change it at will?" I said with a serious expression.

"Dad, you say women can't be emperors, it's always been that way, it's the rules. But Wu Zetian was a woman and she changed the rules to become emperor and became a good one, bringing about the 'Kaiyuan Prosperous Era' of the Tang Dynasty. And what about Queen Victoria of England? They're all women, didn't they govern their countries in an orderly manner? In short, rules are made by people, if they're unreasonable, they should be changed."

"Dad, now it's a new century, a new era, and a new fashion. We can't just follow the old almanac anymore. Tell me, which country, which nation, which unit, which department, and which leader isn't elected? Parents are also leaders, shouldn't they be elected too?" Lao San asked back.

Several dolls all said that every sentence was reasonable and every word made sense. Although I am a bit old-fashioned, how could I not be moved?

"Well, that's up to you," I said, looking at my wife with inquiring eyes, hoping she would speak up and say something reasonable.

"As I see it, you Communists have a principle of 'democratic centralism', and as a Party member, you should be more aware of this than I am." His wife said with a sly smile.

"What to do? The principle within the party is that the minority submits to the majority, and individuals submit to the collective. Looking at the current situation, I have become a lone wolf, and it's hard to offend everyone. I might as well resign myself first, and then let the children choose their own suitable parents."

"Alright, alright, alright. Since everyone wants me to step down, I'll take a break and enjoy my life for a day. Now, I solemnly declare: starting from tomorrow, I resign as the head of the household. As for who will take over, you all figure it out. Let me tell you, when your future leader is incompetent, don't come asking me to be the head again, because I won't do it. A man's word is his bond, once spoken, even a team of horses can't take it back." I had given them advance warning.

"Those in favor of Ms. Xiao being the parent, please raise your hands." The eldest proposed. "I agree!" The second eldest raised his right hand. "I also agree," said the third child, raising his right hand as well.

"I strongly agree, I raise both hands in approval." I said, raising my hands.

"Dad, this is not approval, it's more like surrender." The second child said with a smile.

"Go, go, go, just you poor mouth." I casually pushed Lao Er away.

"Excuse me, parents, what's your next decision? Is there anything about me?" I asked tentatively.

"The next step is to implement the 'three prohibitions' policy." His wife smiled and said.

"What about the three prohibitions?" I asked eagerly.

"It's just that you must 'abstain from alcohol, tobacco and gambling'." His wife said seriously.

"Heavens! This is going to be the death of me." I wailed in distress.
