Chapter Seventeen: How Could It Be Him?!
In the late afternoon, the seaside villa of the Fa Xiu apprentice was as quiet as ever.
As usual, Davy came out of the villa after dinner and started to work in the garden, pruning branches, weeding, loosening soil and watering. She did everything by herself, very seriously.
She enjoys doing these things because they can easily make her relax in the tedious process of studying magic.
Before long, some chores were done, and Davie's forehead had fine beads of sweat on it. She didn't feel tired at all; the moderate labor made her feel physically and mentally pleasant.
The sunset is about to sink into the sea level, and the golden red light falls down, shining on the entire sea surface with a dazzling golden light, which is extremely beautiful. This is Davie's favorite scenery.
She sat on the stone chair quietly admiring until the sun completely disappeared and the sky began to darken, then she got up and returned to the villa.
At this time she saw a figure standing in the garden not far away, the sky was somewhat dark, and after careful distinction, it turned out to be her newly recruited guard Luo Lin.
After putting on the armor, this young man has changed completely, and he no longer gives off that weak and feeble feeling of the past. He now gives Davie a very spirited and lively feeling, just like a thriving tree.
Dai Wei was in a good mood and smiled as she greeted him: "Hey, Luo Lin, have you solved your troubles?"
Rolin smiled back, one hand on his chest, and gave a warrior's salute: "It's all over. Thanks for your concern, Miss Davie."
"That's good. However, you're still young, don't think that just becoming my guard is enough, you also need to take time to hone your martial skills. If you're diligent, I think Harin Uncle will be very willing to guide you." Davi likes people who are hardworking and progressive, just like herself, always seizing every moment to improve her magical abilities.
Roland smiled wryly in his heart, but he couldn't openly express his suspicions about Harlin because he had no evidence. Even if he said something, nobody would believe him, and instead, they would suspect that he was being malicious. So all he could do was smile and say: "I will, Miss Davie, I'll get along well with Uncle Harlin."
"Good, I'm glad we agree on that. You go ahead and get busy, I'll take a rest too." Davie nodded in satisfaction.
"Wait a minute," Luo Lin shouted. He didn't wait here just for a casual chat.
"Anything wrong?" Davie asked.
"Luoluo's eyes quickly scanned the surroundings, not noticing anyone paying attention, and then lowered his voice to say: 'Miss Daiwei, I have something important to discuss with you privately.'"
"Alone?" Davy glanced at the increasingly dark sky, and now talking alone with a young man would cause gossip. She shook her head in refusal: "No, say what you have to say now, I'm listening."
Rolin had no choice but to prepare himself to tell Davie about his experience in the swamp, something he should have done that morning. However, Harin's strange reaction that morning made him more cautious and at the time, he didn't think it was a good idea to involve Davie so soon.
But now circumstances have changed and he can't help but speak up. But Davy has been on the third floor all along, and it's only now that he's found an opportunity to talk to her.
"It's like this, I went to the swamp this time, in the goblin camp... Oh, nothing else, Miss Davy, you rest well." Rolen suddenly changed his tone and his voice returned to normal because he saw Harin coming out from the other side of the villa.
He couldn't say it in front of Harlin, lest he knew he was on guard. Facing a 15th-level warrior, no matter how well Rolin prepared, he was still a very dangerous and difficult opponent. To gain a greater advantage, Rolin had to hide as much as possible.
Dai Wei furrowed her brow, and her keen observational skills allowed her to notice that Luo Lin, this young man, had some sort of taboo regarding Harlin. She didn't know why. Although the first half of what Luo Lin said made her very curious, since he wasn't willing to say it in front of Harlin, Dai Wei didn't ask either.
She didn't want Harin to feel neglected and distant, this regular army-born guard was brought over by his father who spent a lot of money and pulled many strings, finally coming over on the face of her mentor Vianna, she had to take his feelings seriously.
She didn't ask further and smiled: "Mm, okay."
She walked into the villa.
Haling followed closely behind, and when he arrived near the front, the captain of the guard coldly admonished: "Roland, mind your manners. Unless necessary, do not disturb Miss Davie arbitrarily."
Luolin lowered his head and noticed that the captain's hand was still gripping the hilt of his sword, with white knuckles revealing the tension in his heart.
What's he nervous about? What's there to be nervous about? Luo Lin became more and more certain that an assassination was going to take place tonight, and that Harin was a traitor.
"Yes, Uncle Harlin, I remember." Luo Lin's surface was still very respectful.
"Alright, go patrol, do your job well." Harlin nodded and turned to enter the villa as well. He was Davie's personal bodyguard, responsible for her personal safety.
Luolin couldn't follow them in, so he could only patrol around the outside of the villa. By chance, he strolled to the backyard and saw the window of the alchemy room on the third floor.
The window was open, with a light on inside, and someone's shadow flickered vaguely, indicating that there was someone inside. Luo Lin retreated a bit to the back, saw the situation inside the window, and Dai Wei was busy inside.
At this time, the sky had completely darkened, with clouds covering the stars and moon, not a single ray of light was visible, it was truly pitch black.
Luolin's heart moved, he couldn't wait passively for things to happen, he had to take the initiative to attack. Now that Davie was alone in the alchemy room, it was a good opportunity to remind her.
But how can I remind her?
Climb up to the third floor? No way, this wall is too smooth, it's impossible to climb up, and even if he did, how would Davy look at him?
After some deliberation, Luo Lin decided to write a note and throw it in.
Without paper, Luo Lin found a piece of broken cloth and wrote his warning with charcoal. Luo Lin didn't understand the words of this world very well, but he knew some basic words that expressed meaning, because in the game there were all sorts of interesting task books written in the original text of this world, and then translated into Chinese. He had read a lot of them and remembered some.
Finished writing, wrapped this piece of broken cloth around the stone, aimed at the position of the alchemy room and threw it in.
Third floor.
Dai Wei was concentrating on studying the magical properties of Frost Fern in her room when she was startled by a sudden 'clunk' sound, turned her head to see that there was an extra tattered cloth bag on the floor.
She was curious, walked over to pick up the bundle, found that there seemed to be some pattern on it, so she untied the knot, and inside the cloth package was a piece of stone, probably used to increase the weight. Unfolding the tattered cloth, there were indeed words: 'Be careful Harlin. Tonight is dangerous, there's an assassination! If you can't hold out, I'll meet you at the second floor staircase of the villa!'
The handwriting was crooked and twisted, with several mistakes, but the meaning was clearly expressed. Dai Wei furrowed her brow, feeling a surge of anger in her heart, suspecting that this was a malicious prank.
Assassination? She is the apprentice of the Grand Master, who dares to assassinate her? And also meddling with her relationship with her most trusted guard, this is simply sinister. Davi flipped through the tattered cloth, but couldn't find any signature, and didn't know who wrote it.
If she finds out who threw away the rag, she will surely punish him severely!
Dai Wei didn't take the message on the rag seriously at all. She directly put the rag over the flame of the alcohol lamp and burned it, then continued her previous experiment.
More than half an hour had passed when a knock at the door of the alchemy room suddenly came.
Repeatedly being disturbed made Davie feel somewhat annoyed, and she asked loudly: "Who is it?"
"Miss Davy, it's me." The voice of Harling, the sentinel outside the door.
"Is anything wrong?" Davie restrained her emotions and tried to make her tone sound calmer.
"I have an urgent matter to report to you, would you please open the door?" Harin said. The door of the alchemy room was specially reinforced and had spell symbols locked on it, which was the handwriting of the great magician Vianna. Without the owner's consent, no one could enter.
If it were in the past, Davy would have opened the door without any doubt, but today was different. She had just prepared to open the door when she suddenly remembered the reminder on the cloth strip and her footsteps stopped abruptly.
"Be careful, Harlin" "Assassination"... these words floated into her mind, making her hesitate. Harlin knew her habits and would never come to disturb her before, but today was somewhat unusual.
"What's on your mind, just say it, there's no one else here anyway." Davie replied.
There was a pause outside the door, then the voice continued to come in: "Alright. Miss, I just received an urgent message that your father, Sir Holmwood, was riding home in his carriage when the horse bolted and he fell out of the carriage. His life is hanging by a thread and you need to return immediately."
As soon as she heard that her father was in trouble, Dai Wei's heart became greatly anxious, her judgment plummeted, and she hastily said: "Alright, you wait, I'll come immediately."
Although her father was called a miser, he was very fond of her. From an early age to adulthood, all her requests were fulfilled. This villa, all the expenses for her study of magic were provided by her father, and Davy had a deep affection for Holmlin.
She didn't care about anything else, hastily extinguishing the alcohol lamp, putting on her cloak, canceling the runes on the door of the alchemy room, and opening the door.
Outside the door stood guard Harin, who was also anxious. Seeing Davie, a hint of guilt flashed in his eyes, but Davie was flustered and didn't notice. Harin said urgently: "Miss, come with me quickly."
"Alright, lead the way!" Davie's mind was a mess, she couldn't care about anything else, all she wanted to do was see her father as soon as possible.
Haling led the way, with Davie following closely behind, and the two of them rushed forward.
For some reason, Harlin's speed got faster and faster, so fast that Davy couldn't catch up. By the time they reached the third floor staircase, Davy had to open her mouth and shout: "Wait a minute, Uncle Harlin, slow down."
Harlin seemed to have not heard, he quickly went down the stairs, and when Davie reached the stairwell, his figure had already disappeared.
"Beware of Harlin!" The words suddenly flashed into Davie's mind, she felt something was off, just then, she suddenly felt a faint rustling sound behind her back, turned around and saw a black shadow rapidly approaching her, the black shadow's hand held a cold gleam, it was a dagger.
"It's an assassin! This is a premeditated assassination!" Davy was shocked, and quickly descended the stairs while casting a spell. A chill appeared in her hand, which was her specialty - Ice Thorn Technique.
But Davy soon discovered that her spell required half a second of casting time, and the opponent's speed was simply too fast, absolutely would stab the dagger into her heart before her spell was completed.
As she watched that fatal cold light getting closer and closer to her heart, her mind was filled with despair and regret.
One thought after another flashed through her mind uncontrollably.
"How foolish I am! Having received warnings of danger beforehand but ignoring them, now suffering such a disaster, it serves me right!"
"Harlin is indeed a traitor, this guy is really hateful! I was wrong to trust him so much!"
"Who was it that reminded me? What does he know exactly?"
"Yes, at the staircase on the second floor... He said he would meet us at the staircase on the second floor!"
This thought gave Davy hope, she no longer tried to cast a spell to counterattack, but instead retreated with all her might, the instinct of survival causing her body to burst out with astonishing power.
She almost jumped directly from the stairs, jumping over half a floor at once. When she landed, there was a loud "thud" sound, and then she felt a slight "crack" sound coming from her ankle, followed by severe pain surging up to her brain.
Her foot twisted or broke, she couldn't make out what was happening now, but she didn't care and ran downstairs to the second floor.
At this moment, she felt that the dozen or so steps in front of her were exceptionally distant, the assassin behind her was rapidly closing in, but her speed was as slow as a turtle's, and the distance between them was rapidly narrowing.
"Am I going to die?"
Just as this thought occurred to her, she saw a figure rush out of the staircase on the second floor, holding a shield in one hand and a sword in the other, swiftly climbing the stairs, and when he passed by her side, she saw his face clearly.
He hung his head, pursed his lips tightly, and his mouth was slightly pale. His eyes stared fixedly at the upstairs staircase. David knew that there was a fast and terrible powerful assassin up there.
"Roland? How could it be him?" Davy was utterly astonished.
