Chapter 8 The Former Main Line Starting Character
"You were very brave today." These words were spoken by the so-called Second Miss.
Luolin was taken by the first mate to a seaside villa at the port, in a study room with a sea view. One side of the study faced the sea, and the entire wall was inlaid with high-transparency crystal glass that could directly see the endless blue ocean. The other side was a large bookshelf, filled with all kinds of books.
A young woman wearing frameless crystal glasses sat on a soft leather sofa, holding a cup of unknown drink in one hand. As she spoke, her gaze shifted from the books placed on a custom wooden bookshelf to Rorin at the door.
"I'm honored." Luo Lin slightly bowed. His worn-out clothes made him look particularly shabby standing in this elaborately decorated and luxurious study, making him feel somewhat uncomfortable.
He once again keenly felt that this was already a class-stratified real world, and the concept of being able to **storm into the king's palace**, then sleep with the queen on her bed, was simply not applicable in this holos game.
"Kao Wen, you go ahead and busy yourself, I want to talk with this... uh."
"Second Miss, his name is Luo Lin," replied Da Fu Kao Wen immediately.
"Oh, Luo Lin, I want to have a chat with this Luo Lin."
"Yes, Second Miss." First Lieutenant Kao Wen took his leave.
Luolin felt his attitude was very respectful, which wasn't pretentious but genuine respect from the heart.
"Sit down." The young woman pointed to a chair beside her.
Looking at the snow-white plush on the chair, Luo Lin was glad that his clothes were still clean. He had adjusted his mentality and walked over, sat down calmly, and asked: "How should I address you?"
"Hehe, I'm Davi, daughter of Homlin, apprentice to the great wizard Viana. Currently, I'm a novice wizard." Davi smiled and thought this pale young man was quite interesting, he didn't have the usual humble and rustic air that people of his kind normally had, instead, he seemed confident but not arrogant, which was rare.
Luolin was shocked in his heart. This turned out to be Vianna's apprentice... Wait a minute, he suddenly felt that the name Davie sounded familiar, but for a moment he couldn't remember where he had heard it before.
"What are you thinking?" Davie asked.
"Oh, I just thought the name Vianna sounded familiar." Roline came up with a reasonable excuse.
Dai Wei covered her mouth and smiled, Luo Lin noticed that her hands were very beautiful, with white and tender skin, and fingers that were almost invisible to the joints, probably what they called "jade-like hands".
"It's no wonder you've heard of Vienna, of course. But discussing my mentor privately here isn't a polite thing to do, so let's drop the subject."
Dai Wei adjusted her expression and got straight to the point: "Do you know why I wanted to see you?"
Luolin's heart skipped a beat, feeling something was off. He reckoned that the matter of the breathing gel had been exposed, and this needed to be handled carefully. He asked cautiously: "Is it because I killed a shark?"
"No, it's not because of this, although I have to admit that this point did surprise me." A smile appeared on Davy's face again.
She seemed to love laughing, with a round apple face, and even though she was just smiling, she still looked radiant, making people feel close to her unintentionally, which made Luo Lin easily relaxed.
"So is it because I'm a good swimmer, you think I'm special and want to meet me?"
"Getting close to the core of the problem, you continue thinking." Davie shook her head and smiled lightly, she had extremely good patience.
Luolin knew he couldn't hide it anymore. His trick might have fooled the rough men at the dock, but this woman was a knowledgeable and experienced nun; if he continued to hide, he would only be laughed at.
He took out a bag of breathing gel packs from his pocket: "Alright, this is what I rely on to get past people."
"I knew it." Davy smiled again and pointed at the bag: "Open it up and let me see the sol-gel inside."
Luo Lin followed his words and did as he said.
The gel in the bag has become invalid. Originally it was a light green colloidal solution, but after becoming invalid, it turned into a light yellow semi-transparent substance similar to soap.
"The material is very pure and the mixture of materials is done perfectly. I know this colloid must be made by yourself, tell me, who taught you this colloid formula?"
"No one taught me, it was my own discovery."
"Yourself?" Davy was incredulous.
"You know, I'm a dockworker. Around the docks you see salmon seaweed and sponges everywhere. I once saw an otter dive into a mixture of them and then stay underwater for a very long time before surfacing. So I tried it out myself and succeeded."
The story he made up sounds reasonable and convincing, and what he said is so true that it's hard not to believe him.
Dai Wei seemed to have believed, her pale blue eyes behind the crystal glasses admiringly looked at Luo Lin, smiling: "Among so many people on the entire dock, only you noticed this point. You possess extraordinary observational skills. And this is exactly the characteristic of a mage. In other words, you may have the talent of a mage."
As she spoke, she picked up a crystal ball from the bookshelf beside her and beckoned to Roland: "Come over here, put your hand on this, I need to see your elemental sensing ability."
Luo Lin did as he was told, the crystal ball felt warm, and inside the crystal ball there seemed to be a mass of fog. When his hand touched the surface of the crystal, this mass of fog seemed to have been attracted by some kind of force, surging towards his palm, and finally attached a layer of white light on the contact surface between his palm and the crystal.
But the light is not strong, and can even be said to be weak.
Dai Wei intently watched the changes within the crystal ball, and after a while, she shook her head in disappointment: "Unfortunately, your elemental sensing ability is not outstanding, and there's no difference from ordinary people. It seems you can't become a mage. What bad luck, I thought I could find a follower."
Luo Lin, however, did not feel any disappointment at all. He didn't like being a bookworm-like law master who buried his head in books; he would rather die than do that. Moreover, he possessed the War God's talent, and he was born to take the path of a warrior.
Wait, attendant...attendant... Luo Lin's heart suddenly moved when he heard Davie's last words, and he finally remembered who Davie was.
A flood of memories emerged from the depths of his mind.
Yes, yes... Davy is indeed Viana's apprentice, but in the game, Rolen receives his first task from Viana: to investigate the cause of apprentice Davy's death.
In other words, not long after that, if nothing unexpected happens, this Davy will die, and then Vianna will send someone to investigate. After a string of task chains, in a bewildering array of clues, Vianna discovers the destructive cult hidden in Vandom. Following the vine, she also finds out that someone is trying to open the portal to another world.
Unfortunately, by the time she knew this, it was too late. The portal had been opened and the orcs were gathering in the Swamp of Sorrows, which led to the later fall and massacre of the city of Stormwind, also known as the Dark Portal's opening and the First War.
In the blink of an eye, Luo Lin felt that this was a great opportunity to get close to Vianna! Moreover, becoming the guardian of a mage would be a huge boost in status, with a broader horizon and more opportunities for advancement.
Luolin immediately decided to seize this opportunity.
Then he said sincerely, "Miss Davi, I heard that mages all need some loyal and dedicated bodyguards. Although I can't be your apprentice to assist you in learning magic, maybe I can be the one who protects your life."
The mage is very powerful when casting spells, and has superhuman strength in direct combat. However, when facing an assassin hiding in the shadows, it's a tragedy. Mages, especially low-level ones, rarely escape once targeted by an assassin... Like Davie here, she will die at the hands of an assassin in the near future, at least that was what happened in the previous life's game.
"Guard, you? Don't you think you're a bit too thin, Roland?" Davy teased with a smile.
Luo Lin was not a person who gave up easily, he continued to persuade: "Noble Miss Fa Shi, don't forget, I just killed a shark in the sea."
"Hmm, I forgot about that. It does indeed reflect your bravery as a warrior. Your character doesn't seem bad either, I just inquired about your past and heard about you and your foster father. However, the key point is, I don't need any more bodyguards." Davi spread her hands: "You see, I'm not a powerful wizard, nor do I get involved in any disputes or struggles, danger is far from me, the bodyguards I've hired are already enough to protect my safety."
This was a veiled refusal, but Roland would not be deterred by just one or two sentences: "Miss Magician, I think you're wrong."
"Oh?" Davie said with interest.
"I think the real danger doesn't come from things that ordinary people can see, but from the blades that stretch out in the dark. So a good guard needs to have the ability to anticipate crises and prevent them before they happen. I also believe that the guards you hired do not possess this quality, whereas I have exactly this ability to perceive danger from details."
His words seemed to have moved Davie, her white and tender fingers touched the corner of her lips, tilted her head and thought for a moment, then smiled again. She really liked smiling: "Lorin, I must say you're not modest at all."
"Humility is a virtue that only the strong are qualified to possess, and I'm not yet worthy of it." Luo Lin's words were sharp and piercing, but he could see that Dai Wei's personality was very easy-going, and she wouldn't take offense at his rudeness.
As expected, Davi didn't get angry, and the smile on her face grew even thicker: "I have to say, you're a very interesting person, and more confident than all of my guards! Although I know you're not actually a qualified mage guard, and I also know that you still owe a lot of debt, doing this is definitely for me to pay off your debts. But I agree with your views on danger, and I appreciate your personality as well. So..."
The woman hesitated at the crucial moment.
"So what?" Roland showed a timely anxious expression on his face, of course he could see that Davie was intentionally selling Guan Zhi, but he had to satisfy the little hobby of a young girl who was also his future boss, right?
"Heh heh." Davy smiled again: "So you've got a chance to become my guard, just need to pass one test."
Luolin's heart was filled with joy: "You said it, I will definitely go all out!"
"There's a gang of annoying earth elementals thieves in the muddy wetlands, they specialize in robbing travelers and merchants passing through the wetlands. Recently, they even stole a batch of magic crystals from my mentor, it's really despicable. Their camp is hidden deep within the wetlands, if you can enter the wetlands and find the location of this camp, then I'll acknowledge your abilities."
Luolin was overjoyed when he heard about the task. This task would be extremely difficult for others, but as someone who had spent years gathering herbs and refining gold, he was very familiar with the game map. He also knew where the goblin camp was located, so this task was really too easy.
"Miss Davy, I will complete the task within three days!"
Just as he accepted the task, Zhi Brain released information at the same time:
"Quest Accepted: Investigate the Dwarven Thieves' Camp."
"Reward Complete: 160 experience."
Luolin glanced at his current experience bar again, which showed: 10/200 (Level 2).
As long as he completes this task and adds the 150 experience from finally clearing off Marfo's high-interest debt, he can level up to three-star, and his physical strength will be even more powerful.
Dai Wei obviously thought that Luo Lin couldn't complete the task in three days. She shook her head: "Three days is too short, how about a week?"
"Three days is enough." Luo Lin still had a confident face.
"You look very confident, I hope your abilities can match this confidence." Davy said solemnly, she felt that this young man was overconfident.
