Chapter 1: The Great Belly of England

  Big Belly English Lord (2)

The bombardment started again, the smell of explosives choked the lungs, the shockwave made the eardrums bleed, and the smoke lingered for a long time, with only a faint yellow outline of the sun visible. The soldiers thought a new round of attack was about to begin, but the US military suddenly withdrew from the position under the cover of planes and tanks. The Sharp Knife Company charged forward, but gained little, as the US military was familiar with the Volunteer Army's Sunday offensive tactics, and before retreating, they blew up all the supplies that could not be taken away.

Chen Zizhong stood on the US military position, holding a can of food, swallowing saliva loudly. Inside was a small piece of bread with butter. He was starving. A transport plane circled above the position, still dizzy from the airdrop. The parachutes were as big as eight bedsheets, and eggs hung from them without breaking.

White flowers floated in the air like parachutes, and in Chen Zizhong's eyes they turned into white steamed buns, shining brightly and emitting a fragrant aroma.

The wind was too strong and the airdropped materials were blown into the mountain valley. Chen Zizhong spread his legs wide and chased after them, Xu Kai couldn't stop him, and even firing a warning shot didn't work.

Chen Zizhong, who rushed into the mountain valley, abandoned the supplies that had fallen into the snow pit. He found a small airport hidden in the valley, with three reconnaissance planes that did not have time to withdraw.

A few remaining US soldiers discovered him, bullets whizzing past. Chen Zizhong rolled left and right, kicking up a snow curtain three or four meters high, the American troops were blinded, their shooting lost its accuracy, but Chen Zizhong's bullets shot out from the snow curtain, every single one hitting its mark, in the blink of an eye they captured three planes.

Chen Zizhong, who had forgotten his hunger, rolled around in the snow and shouted loudly, "I've captured a big flower bun!" The sound of his voice carried several miles away.

The company's instructor, deputy commander were sacrificed in the just-ended fierce battle. The deputy instructor and the second platoon leader were seriously injured, and more than half of the backbone of each class were lost. The company did not have time to rest before receiving orders from superiors, and set out at dawn in two routes. Chen Zizhong, the third platoon leader, led the third platoon to take a shortcut, bypassing the enemy-occupied area, and rushed to support brother units. Xu Ke led the remaining troops, including lightly wounded personnel, to rush to support through a safer region.

Supplies that can't be taken away can be eaten openly, but the three captured planes are a big headache. Losing them is unbearable, and no one knows how to fly them. Just as they were worrying, two B-29 bombers burst out of the clouds and destroyed the planes.

"Damn it! The big chicken is eating the small chicken!"

In front of Chen Zizhong were three ammunition boxes filled with biscuits, canned goods and heavy water bottles, enough to feed five strong men.

Chen Zizhong ate with a mouthful of oil, and the bayonet in his hand served as both a can opener and chopsticks.

Xu Kai walked over and kicked his butt: "The boss said, Wu Song got drunk and beat Jiang Meng's god, Chen Dabao was greedy and swallowed a plane, let me set up a table for you, fill you up."

Chen Zizhong smacked his lips: "A whole bottle of 66-proof Laobaigan would be even more comfortable!"

"Why not let the leader give you a wife?" Xu Kai used his toes to push away the empty tin cans on the ground, seventeen in total. "Chen Dabao, all of these were raised by their parents, how can you eat so much?"

"Let's eat a bowl. We're camel-like now, eating more and storing it for later use."

Chen Zizhong stood up and patted his bulging belly, then changed positions and continued to relieve himself.

Chen Zizhong has more than a dozen nicknames, the superiors call him Chen Dashanren, the soldiers call him Chen Dagan, the Northeasterners call him Chen Laohu, and at the celebration banquet he is called Chen Dadupi...

"A single steamed bun can last three days, and a basket of buns can be swallowed in one go." Chen Zizhong's rubber stomach made him famous, but also brought him great suffering. He was born into a poor farming family that struggled to make ends meet, and as a child, he often went hungry. While others' appetites decreased after going hungry for a long time, his grew bigger, and it's said that his enormous belly was the result of those days of hunger. When he was six years old, he climbed onto a neighbor's roof and ate all the dried wild boar meat that had been hung out to dry. Just as he was licking his lips in satisfaction, he was caught red-handed. The neighbor was an elderly Manchu man who had once been wealthy but had squandered his family's fortune and had no special skills, so he became a bodyguard. He had visited the Shaolin Temple and studied martial arts at Wudang Mountain, and later hid out in a small village after accidentally killing a corrupt police officer from the puppet Manchukuo government. The old man spent his days hunting and gardening, living a leisurely life. He didn't want to hit Chen Zizhong, saying that he could eat but not hide, and pulled out the dried meat from his pocket. Chen Zizhong said he hadn't hidden anything, that he had eaten it all, but the old man didn't believe him - at least five pounds of dried wild boar meat had been hung out to dry on the roof, and a six-year-old child couldn't possibly eat it all. Chen Zizhong stuck out his neck and said that if he'd eaten it, then he'd eaten it, and got a big bump on his head as a result. The old man was amused and told him that tomorrow he would give him three pounds of dried wild boar meat, as long as he could eat it without getting sick, and from then on he would take care of Chen Zizhong's meals. Chen Zizhong said that wasn't enough, that he still hadn't eaten his fill, and in front of the hunter, he swallowed another three pounds of dried beef.
