Chapter 62
The feeling of returning home is really exciting and makes one's whole body tremble with excitement.
After going out and having a fierce fight with someone, the whole person's feeling is still immersed in the aftertaste of the fight, so the feeling is not strong. This time, I went out without any danger, and it was only for a few days. When the plane crossed the border and the pilot told us that we were now flying over Chinese airspace, several of my brothers couldn't help but cheer up.
Looking out of the porthole, the snow-capped mountains and those winding ice-encrusted rivers between the towering peaks seem so familiar. Especially when I see the small town houses under the porthole that look like matchboxes, my heart feels an even stronger longing to go home.
I'm starting to understand a little bit why those warriors who have been fighting abroad for many years would kneel down and kiss the soil when they return home.
That's a surge from deep within one's bones, unstoppable!
The plane landed, and after three to five days of intensive training and summary, it was time for winter training.
Winter training is a very important link for our troops who are specialized in high-altitude and plateau operations.
Winter on the plateau is almost a dead land for all living things. The small animals that are usually active on the Gobi Desert have long stored enough fat and food for winter, hiding in wind-proof burrows and not coming out.
Those stubbornly growing plants also shed all their leaves, leaving only withered branches trembling in the cold wind.
But we had to sneak onto the Gobi Desert covered with ice and snow for hard training at this time.
Throughout history, both at home and abroad, there have been countless examples of using bad weather to launch surprise attacks and achieve great victories. Especially for troops like ours, who specialize in fighting in harsh environments, even the cold snow and ice sent by heaven can't stop us. How can we call ourselves special forces if we can't even handle that?
With our horses ready, we galloped into the icy and snowy Gobi Desert.
Maybe heaven is fed up with our arrogance?
On the first day we entered Gobi Desert, a sudden snowstorm came towards us unexpectedly.
I remember at that time, facing the big snowflakes that could suffocate people to death, the instructor stood against the wind with his left hand holding a gun and his right hand holding a cup, bursting into a classical warrior-like laughter.
If someone could understand the hint and stand behind the instructor to add a sentence - why did the general laugh?
I reckon even Cao Mengde back then wouldn't have had an instructor with such a carefree and majestic demeanor!
Soon we will be as excited as knowing what the instructor is doing.
In international special forces teams, in the icy and snowy lands, they can still fight continuously or even conduct logistics-free warfare. I reckon Finnish military grandpas are pretty awesome.
Finnish Army Special Separate Light Cavalry Regiment, the predecessor of this unit was almost a special force formed during World War II specifically to fight against the Soviet army.
This unit is composed of tough guys selected from various branches of the Finnish military, especially skilled in winter warfare.
After a day and night of hard work, these Finnish soldiers can venture out 80 kilometers in the blizzard with just a pair of snowshoes. Moreover, these Finnish soldiers are also skilled at parachuting, and even in the situation where personnel and weapons are separated in the cold winter, they can still find the buried weapons in the snow in a short time and continue to fight to the death.
As early as the Winter War, the Finnish army's guerrilla-style attack mode made the Soviet military swallow a bitter pill. To say nothing of other things, just the destruction of field kitchens alone was in the hundreds, forcing those Soviet soldiers to make do with makeshift fires for warmth and cooking at their campsites.
The Finnish soldiers were also masters of playing in the snowy terrain, taking advantage of the darkness and their swift actions. Who knows, maybe the Soviet soldiers were just about to roast some food over a fire when suddenly a white shadow appeared next to them, sliding past on snowshoes, and without hesitation, they tossed hand grenades into the fire pit.
Such a combat mode is simple and effective, and can slow down the action of the opponent's large army with very few troops, which is naturally a model we need to follow.
It is also required that combat personnel have high quality!
Seeing such a big blizzard, the instructor is thrilled.
Finally can properly train this group of bastards!
But we were a bit sad then.
Three days of field rations, sleds and other small gadgets plus full equipment, it seems that we have to force our way through the snowy terrain for five days, and also add scattered gatherings, attacks, and some strange projects, which makes us feel overwhelmed!
So when the instructor kicked us off the sled one by one, the scorching feeling on our buttocks and the increasingly cold taste in our hearts formed a stark contrast.
The vast snowy expanse, without any reference points, just threw us down. Although we all brought life-saving devices and the observation team followed far behind, it's hard to guarantee that nothing unexpected will happen, which would be a real hassle...
Pulling a sled along a gentle slope, I calculated in my heart how far we need to walk these days and what speed it should be.
Sledding, especially for a long time, is not as easy and effortless as it looks on TV. Although it may save some energy when sliding down the slope, it also requires some skill and technique on flat ground and uphill.
After one or two hours, the arms and legs will start to feel sore. After continuously sliding for a few days, I estimate that person will be almost crippled with fatigue.
What's been giving me a headache is the distance I have to travel.
According to the previous agreement, we have to complete a journey of nearly 450 kilometers within five days, and also attack a guarded material warehouse on the way. In other words, we don't have time to sleep at all, and can only keep moving forward continuously.
This is getting a bit torturous.
Not far behind me, the sled of the observation group was following closely, but I dare to guarantee that not a single brother dared to quit halfway and sit in the observation car with air conditioning and hot meals.
We're at least among the elite of the military, right?
No matter what, I just can't get rid of that person!
The first day passed quickly, although there was a period of time when I felt weak all over and just wanted to sit down and rest. But after breaking through the most difficult stage, I felt like I had energy all over my body, as if sliding for several more days and nights wouldn't be a problem.
I know that this is the arrival of the exercise excitement stage. According to our physical ability, this time period can last for four hours, and then it's followed by fatigue again and excitement again.
I must make the most of this exciting period and hurry as much as possible.
Otherwise, I would definitely be thrown onto that sled by the brothers of the observation group in a powerless situation.
