Chapter 19: Escape

  Insufficient balance

That afternoon, Bao Yulin discovered that Zhang Xihang, Lu Kai and others were secretly approaching several scattered captured soldiers, discussing something with them. He thought of the sweet potatoes they had collected yesterday when they helped the Vietnamese guards dig up sweet potatoes, and he knew that these people's actions should be within these two days. He must act immediately, otherwise there would be no time left.

Around noon, Bao Yulin, as usual, called Wang Xiaodong, and the two of them went to the prisoner-of-war camp cafeteria for lunch and to fetch water under the escort of a Vietnamese guard. The water in the fields was not dared to be drunk.

On the way back, it was no different from usual. The Vietnamese soldier who escorted the two prisoners was always the same one. No one wanted to take a detour for nothing, and they were all sweating profusely on this round trip. In the army, these trivial matters were always handled by those with the lowest status, who were often bullied. The army is a place that values martial prowess, in other words, the Vietnamese soldiers responsible for escorting Bao Yulin and Wang Xiaodong were short and weak individuals. If he didn't have an assault rifle in his hand, Bao Yulin estimated that he could take him down with just two punches.

From the moment he entered the POW camp, Bao Yulin had been thinking about how to deal with him. If you want to deal with someone deliberately, the best way is not to let him guard against you and be on his guard against you. Otherwise, even if your actions are fast, it's impossible to be faster than bullets. Bao Yulin has always understood this point, just like fishing needs to hit the nest, and catching birds requires a medium, which is a reason to take advantage of when he is not on guard.

This isn't, on the way this Vietnamese soldier no longer thinks like usual, always holding a gun, in his opinion, Bao Yulin is harmless. Usually, he tries to test Bao Yulin, for example, temporarily hiding behind a tree to pee, occasionally tying his shoelaces, and Bao Yulin comes out and waits neatly on the side, but at that time, he keeps an eye on him, maintaining a safe distance, loading the gun, opening the safety catch, in case Bao Yulin makes any move, he will shoot immediately. But as time went by, when he found out that Bao Yulin was no longer dangerous, he relaxed a lot. For example, he no longer held his gun all day (it's tiring), and sometimes even walked ahead of Bao Yulin, especially on the day they finished building the toilet, there was always a smell on their bodies.

On the way back to the prisoner-of-war camp, there was nothing. Bao Yulin had to think of other comrades and in order not to implicate others, he had to find a way to leave Wang Xiaodong in the prisoner-of-war camp. So before returning to the prisoner-of-war camp, he couldn't do anything.

  。。。。。。

As usual, Wang Xiaodong chose the dishes and Bao Yulin chose the drinks. After all, Wang Xiaodong was younger and wouldn't be able to move the dishes around, so it was better for him to choose.

The canteen of the prisoner-of-war camp had already prepared hot water and meals, and as soon as the chef saw Bao Yulin and Wang Xiaodong enter, he hurriedly served Wang Xiaodong a meal, while no one was willing to have anything to do with Bao Yulin, who was considered a traitor.

He lifted the bucket onto the stove, opened the lid of the pot, and slowly poured the boiling water into the bucket with a ladle. After finishing, he covered the lid again. The time was almost the same as usual, but nobody knew that at this moment, there was still more than half a pot of boiling water left in the pot.

After this good thing, Bao Yulin carried a bucket of water from Wang Xiaodong's side, but somehow, Bao Yulin's bucket was hung on the edge of Wang Xiaodong's rice frame. At this time, more than half a bucket of boiling water poured out. Wang Xiaodong just wanted to put the carrying pole on his shoulder, and when he saw Bao Yulin's bucket swinging, he didn't have time to dodge, and the boiling water splashed onto Wang Xiaodong's body.

At that moment, Wang Xiaodong was scalded and cried out loudly. The kitchen's cook, the prisoner of war, and the guards who escorted Bao Yulian and Wang Xiaodong back knew that this time, Wang Xiaodong would not die but would be severely burned. Everyone saw that this water was just scooped out of the pot by Bao Yulian.

Wang Xiaodong's pants were pulled down, and the chef also brought soy sauce. Seeing Wang Xiaodong's leg quickly turning red, the guard hastily gestured for him to take care of it and go to the infirmary. However, Wang Xiaodong felt that although his leg looked quite red, after applying soy sauce, it didn't hurt much. He even thought maybe it was because he handled it in time. Seeing the guard's gesture for him to go to the infirmary, he shook his head repeatedly. Wang Xiaodong thought this wasn't a big deal and wanted to continue delivering food to the prisoners.

One of them, Bao Yulin, pressed down on his shoulder: "You just stay put honestly, I'll bring the food! Tell Zhang Xihang that today is an opportunity, such opportunities are rare, grasp it well!" Bao Yulin's voice was quite loud, and the Vietnamese guard thought he was excited, so didn't say anything. But Wang Xiaodong and several Chinese prisoners of war who were cooking didn't understand what Bao Yulin meant by these nonsensical words. However, seeing how insistent Bao Yulin was, Wang Xiaodong also stood still without moving.

Bao Yulin adjusted the dishes and put them in a food box, then shouldered a carrying pole with water at one end and rice at the other.

The guard saw that Wang Xiaodong was unwilling to go for treatment and didn't say anything, anyway there was no way to communicate with him. He also didn't bother to care about trivial matters, his task was just to escort Bao Yulin and Wang Xiaodong back to get food.

  。。。。。。

After He Bao and the guard walked out, several chefs came up to ask with concern how Wang Xiaodong was doing. Wang Xiaodong moved his arms and legs a bit, seemingly not seriously injured, so he replied: "Nothing's wrong, seems like no big deal."

The chefs deal with hot things every day, they know that half a bucket of boiling water is enough to scald someone, let alone kill a pig. How did Wang Xiaodong only get a little red on his leg and seem completely fine? Someone put their hand on the edge of the bucket left by Bao Yulin and touched it: "Hey, this water isn't even hot!"

Everyone was shocked. Who could have seen that this was the standard boiling water that Bao Yulin had just scooped out of the pot, how could it be like this?

"Isn't there originally half a bucket of cold water in this bucket?" someone said.

Wang Xiaodong suddenly realized, no wonder Bao Yulin was carrying the poles all the way back home earlier. If it were any other time, he would definitely be swinging two buckets with a pole and walking back home with a carefree air.

"What is this guy trying to do? Looks like I'll have to talk to Deputy Commander Zhang tonight. Who knows what he's saying." Wang Xiaodong muttered to himself.

  。。。。。。

Bao Yulin carried a pole with rice on one end and water on the other, walking very unnaturally as the water in the bucket kept swaying. Anyway, he walked unsteadily along this road, the guards escorting him couldn't help but laugh at the sight, but they also knew that this was the most difficult load to carry, and normally it was a job for two people, today Bao Yulin had to do it alone, so they didn't rush him.

After walking for about ten minutes, Bao Yulin slowed down, and the little guard gradually approached him. He saw that when he was crossing a drainage ditch on the ground, Bao Yulin happened to be changing shoulders. At this time, all his attention was focused on the carrying pole, and he didn't pay attention to his feet. This was good. Bao Yulin stepped on a small stone with one foot, and his whole body swayed, and the load in his hand was about to fall down.

Maybe at this time the little guard thought he was still quite agile, or maybe he was worried that if the food spilled, he wouldn't have anything to eat either, so he quickly took a step forward and held onto the frame with both hands.

Now, Bao Yulin was able to free his hands and saw him quickly pull out a wooden club and swing it with force. The club hit the small guard's head. "Thud" sounded, the small guard fell down immediately.

Bao Yulin removed the magazine from the guard's rifle, took away the bullets on his body, and then turned around and ran into the sugarcane field. He didn't want to take the gun, it was just unnecessary, carrying that thing would be a burden, he looked like an ordinary Vietnamese farmer now, empty-handed, if you saw him from afar, you wouldn't know what he did. But if he had a gun in his hand, it would be different, people would be more cautious, and when the time came, he would shout and run away, that's all, everything would be over. He had thought about these details long ago. However, there was one thing he didn't forget, to take away all the bullets from the rifle. As for the little guard, he didn't intend to kill him. No one knew how many Chinese prisoners of war Vietnam had captured, maybe they wouldn't report it to their superiors for a while to shirk responsibility, and then organize forces to capture people on their own, but if the little guard was killed, that would force the prisoner-of-war camp to report and make an all-out effort to capture him. This way, Zhang Xihang and others would definitely not be able to move at night, and it might even lead to a full-camp inspection, and who knows what else they might find.

  。。。。。。

Bao Yulin didn't run far, but instead ran to the vicinity of the guards' barracks and found a place to hide. It's said that the most dangerous place is often the safest. Hiding here, not only could he clearly know the situation of the guards, but also help his comrades in need at any time. Bao Yulin really hoped that when they returned home in the future, these comrades would be able to prove their innocence.

  。。。。。。

Half an hour later, the little guard ran back to the guardhouse with a bloody face and an empty gun. Bao Yulin watched from afar. Soon after, Ruan Yuanjia came out, and the guards dispersed in different directions after forming up. Ruan Yuanjia took the little guard to where the incident happened. The entire guard camp fell silent soon after. Bao Yulin carefully counted that, excluding the 4 on the watchtower, a total of 32 people had been let out, including Ruan Yuanjia. If adding the 5 in the sugarcane field, there were at most only 5 people left in the guardhouse.

Now, Bao Yulin felt at ease. Wu Hongying's dormitory was located at the southernmost end of the barracks, perhaps arranged by Ruan Yuanjia to flatter Wu Hongying. Anyway, this location was the least likely to be noticed, and Wu Hongying was not in the prisoner-of-war camp now. There were things to eat in her dormitory, and more importantly, because of Wu Hongying's "trial", Bao Yulin had been here a few times and was familiar with the room.

After waiting for a while, Baoyu Lin finally mustered up the courage to sneak into Wu Hongying's room. The weather was hot and Wu Hongying had left the window open as usual. It was easy for Baoyu Lin to reach in through the window and turn the door handle. Actually, Baoyu Lin had also thought of another possibility - if Wu Hongying had closed the window, he could have just squeezed the wooden door open with a bit of force, after all it was designed to keep honest people out, not dishonest ones.

After entering the house, Bao Yulin first rummaged through and found something to fill his stomach. Then, without caring, he crawled under the bed. He needed to rest for a while, as tonight, he still had to keep an eye on Zhang Xihang and their actions.
