Chapter 2
It's a bit laughable, in a city of millions like B City, I ran into Lu You, my ex-boyfriend, on the very first day I returned to China.
He slightly lowered his head, focusing on choosing high heels, wearing a suit and light-colored shirt, meticulous, even in summer, not hot; one hand holding the shoe to consult the sales lady, eyebrow tip calm, also looks somewhat familiar with the road.
Just as he was about to look up, I turned my back on him. It wasn't worth letting him see me in my current state, from head to toe there was nothing to be proud of.
When Fan Dong arrived, I had already chosen a set of four-piece suit and an air-conditioned quilt, ready to ride his car back home.
The jet lag hadn't fully kicked in, and I soon felt drowsy after sitting in the passenger seat for a while. The elevated highway was severely congested, with traffic at a standstill, drawing black outlines around the densely packed skyscrapers.
"Xu Shenshen", Fu Andong pulled the handbrake and turned his head to look at me.
"Hmm?" I raised an eyebrow at him. He hadn't shaved for how many days now, and his chin had a bluish stubble.
"Want to eat sour and spicy noodles? There's none in London." He came with enthusiasm, a smile at the corner of his lips, looking at me proudly.
"I smiled: 'I'm a bit tired today. Let's swap shifts and go out together later. Call Liu Xi along.'"
Fu An Dong snorted: "Now you're putting on a show, huh? Next time you pay."
I closed my eyes: "Alright, I'll pay. Give me a 10-pound package for the two of you."
"He smiled lightly: 'My wife is beautiful, right? Do you feel inferior now?'"
" Inferiority complex. Liu Xi is really good in every way, just a bit nearsighted. I guess people just like men who give them a sense of security."
A good man is one who is handsome and gives a sense of security.
"That's really true. From young to old, your face has always been a treasure that brings peace and safety wherever you go."
Fu An Dong turned his face to look at me, the expression that was crying and laughing helplessly a second ago changed to a completely indifferent one in an instant. "You can say whatever you want, I'm in a good mood today, don't want to provoke you."
I raised an eyebrow and gazed at him, "Hey, I want to find a job."
Fu An Dong fell silent for a few seconds, "What kind of thing are you looking for?"
"Fools have more money and the boss is handsome."
The car was quiet for a few minutes before Fu Andong spoke up with a hint of hesitation, "How about coming to my company?"
I chuckled softly and turned my head to look out the window. The lights in the office building had already been lit up, and the white glow was somewhat chilly.
"What's up? Boss, what position is suitable for me?"
Fu An Dong's expression was indiscernible, as if he had let out a soft sigh, "Whatever."
I laughed: "Or else, let me be your supervisor for a while?"
He raised his head and said lightly: "Alright."
I looked into his eyes, "Oh? The investment director isn't someone you can just give away, is he? Why do you also have to attend the board meeting. I don't know what Uncle Fu will think when he sees me, he'll spit out a mouthful of blood?"
Fu An Dong's eyebrows suddenly furrowed, his face gloomy, and he said in a low voice: "Xu Shen Shen..." He paused for a long time without continuing.
The cars in front started moving slowly, and I poked my head out to remind him: "Fu Andong, it's time to go."
We didn't say much on this road.
The verbal sparring just now didn't make me feel much better, but for some reason, when I saw Fu Andong, I couldn't help but bring up old matters with a sarcastic tone, or maybe exposing the old wounds in that instant gave me a thrill, a thread of pleasure.
Until he walked me down to the lobby, he slowly spoke up: "Xu Shenshen, do you want a job?"
I smiled at him: "Want, of course want. Who doesn't know that working in your company is a golden rice bowl? You arrange it as you see fit. That investment director was just joking with me, look at my luck, isn't it like buying something and losing money?"
His gaze lingered on my face for a long time before he finally curled up the corners of his mouth and smiled: "Alright, you come pay the bill and I'll cover for you."
I got off the bus and waved goodbye to him.
Night fell, Fu An Dong smiled at me and drove away. He was used to pretending that nothing was wrong when I was being prickly with him, sometimes making me feel like nothing had changed, nothing had been broken.
