Chapter 5 The Pirates Arrived

  Chapter 5 Pirates (1)

The enemy across the way blew a low horn, and the pirate camp began.

From the city wall, pirates are seen running back and forth in their camp, then gathering at the entrance of the pirate camp with knives, swords, and simple ladders.

The dark-skinned Borana people, wrapped in turbans and holding curved knives, were packed tightly together, shouting and cursing, the sound of clashing weapons filling the air.

Ye Feng gazed at the pirates' disheveled formation and couldn't help but feel a sense of melancholy. He leaned against the city wall, muttering to himself: "If I had a squad of medieval heavy cavalry under my command, just thirty men would be enough to make these guys never return."

Oola climbed up onto the city wall, looking like he had never experienced such a grand scene before, and seemed very excited. He asked while leaning out to look outside with all his might: "Heavy cavalry? What's that? Is it powerful?"

Ye Feng was momentarily speechless, unsure of how to explain. Fortunately, at this time, the pirates formed a messy line and rushed towards the city gate in a swarm.

Ye Feng coldly smiled and found a spot on the city wall with an open view. He took off the crossbow from his back, pulled up the bowstring. Finally, he took out the scope from his chest and installed it onto the crossbow.

Oola followed closely behind, curiously watching as he shouldered the crossbow and took aim at a figure with a clearly visible helmet rushing forward in the lead. He shook his head and said: "That's more than five hundred feet away, you can't possibly hit..."

Before he could finish, a loud "bang" was heard. Ye Feng lightly pulled the trigger, and the crossbow arrow shot out like lightning. Seeing an arrow shooting out from the city wall, the pirates who were attacking couldn't help but burst into laughter, thinking that some rookie archer had been scared silly by them.

But the guy running in front suddenly turned around with an unbelievable look on his face, and their laughter was like a rooster's neck being strangled, stopping abruptly. Only to see that the man had an arrow stuck in his chest, with fresh blood slowly flowing out of the wound.

Like a classic slow-motion scene, the long sword slowly fell from the pirate's hand and hit the ground with a "dang" sound. Then he waved his hands in the air for a few times, as if trying to grasp something, finally falling to the ground, twitching a few times before becoming still.

The pirates around "hissed" and scattered, all holding up their shields to cover themselves.

The city head suddenly burst out a huge cheer, Oula was excitedly shouting, repeatedly saying: "Great, how did you do it, how did you do it."

Ye Feng shook his head in disappointment, while restringing his bow, and said: "Not good enough. Originally I just planned to injure that pirate, didn't expect an error would occur."

Euler turned around in anger and said: "Why? For these abominable pirates who burned our home, you still want to show mercy?"

He adjusted the scope, saw Oola's appearance, and smiled lightly, saying: "Of course not. You see, a dead enemy is just a corpse, and no one on the battlefield will care about a corpse. But an enemy who has been seriously injured is different, he will become your friend."

Seeing Euler's puzzled look, he didn't explain any more and aimed at a pirate wearing a metal breastplate. With a light touch on the trigger, "Bang"! The crossbow arrow flew out, shooting that pirate through. The huge inertia made the pirate spin around in place before falling heavily to the ground. He clutched his wound, struggling painfully on the ground, and let out continuous cries of agony. Someone nearby immediately carried him to the back.

He pointed to the place and said, "Look. A heavily injured enemy requires at least two people to take care of him, so one arrow can reduce three enemies. The wounded will bleed, shout loudly, making those who are not wounded feel afraid, lowering morale. Finally, the wounded enemy has not died, so he still needs food, medical supplies to bandage his wounds, and will consume a lot of the enemy's supplies.

Oola looked at him with a weird gaze and said, "Wow! You're too awesome. I didn't know there were so many things here before. But somehow, this feels a bit..."

"Despicable!" Diana chimed in. She didn't know when she had walked over, but it was clear that she had heard the conversation between Ye Feng and Oola.

Ye Feng glanced at this woman who was lingering around like a ghost, and found that her gaze contained many complex things. But he wasn't a psychologist, and now wasn't the time to deal with those things.

Once again, Ye Feng fixed his gaze on one of the leaders in the pirate group, who was constantly shouting and kicking at the surrounding pirates. From the shining armor he wore, it was clear that his status was not low.

The bowstring rang out again. The pirate leader had just ordered the two pirates behind him to speed up, and as soon as he turned around, a larger and larger arrowhead appeared in his eyes, "puff" sound, the crossbow arrow shot into his eyes, deeply embedded in his skull.

A cry of terror spread through the pirate ranks, some slowing down, others stopping in their tracks and turning around to flee.

Seeing the man's corpse fall to the ground, Oola asked: "How did you manage to shoot him dead again?"

Ye Feng sighed and said, "Mr. Ma told us long ago that specific things need to be analyzed specifically. The leader is not the same as the soldiers. If a leader gets injured, someone else will stand up. But if they find out that being a leader means becoming a dead leader, then no one will want to be a leader like a fool. And without a leader, the team is like a headless chicken, it's not a team at all."

Diana was moved and changed color upon hearing this, while Oola was bewildered.

Ye Feng looked at his innocent and bewildered expression, feeling a bit unbearable, said: "Alright, you just need to know that its function is to make the enemy afraid, that's enough."

Under the city, a pirate leader running at the end of the team shouted loudly: "Run forward, under the city wall, the crossbow arrow is useless." At the same time, a low horn sounded from the pirates' camp.

The leader who had just shouted was immediately nailed to the ground by Ye Feng's crossbow arrow, and the pirates accelerated towards the city wall with a loud shout. However, this distance was like crossing hell, with rapid shooting of crossbow arrows, each one piercing through a pirate's body.

The archers on the city wall also began to shoot arrows, but their range was too short, and their accuracy and lethality were obviously insufficient. Only a few arrows hit the enemy, and the threat to the pirates was negligible.

Ye Feng finally understood that the archery skills in this place were actually so low.

When the pirates rushed to the city wall and started climbing up with ladders, more than twenty or thirty of them had already fallen along the way and couldn't get up. Although it was a small number for the pirate army of five hundred people, it was a great shock to the pirates' hearts. The sound of more than twenty throats crying out in unison would not be as pleasant as a girl's love song. No matter who thought that they might be the next target, their heart would absolutely not feel comfortable.

But when the pirates crowded under the cloud ladder, the nightmare was far from over.

On the city wall were well-equipped, strong and brave defenders who fought to defend their homes. The crossbow continued to shoot at the pirates with ease.

The pirates under the city can now clearly hear the 'bang' sound of the crossbow's shot, and for the pirates, this sound is like a harbinger of death.

Every time a "twang" sound occurs, all the pirates will shudder and nervously look for the poor devil who was shot by the crossbow bolt, then pray that they won't be discovered by the crossbowman, squeeze into the crowd, squeeze again, keep a low profile, even lower.

Ye Feng calmly chose his target, slowly drawing his bow and releasing the arrow. Oola cheered excitedly on the side, shouting with joy every time he hit a pirate, jumping up and down in excitement.

Ye Feng has always been searching for targets that are pirates with good weapons and armor, most of whom are the leaders among the pirates.

After pirates crowded under the city wall, Ye Feng found it difficult to find a more valuable target among them, so he turned his attack towards the pirates climbing up the city wall.

At such close range, the power of the crossbow bolt was astonishing, and even full metal armor could be penetrated effortlessly. The crossbow bolt would often pass through one pirate's body and then pin his hapless comrade behind him with a chilling effect.

The pirates, under the instigation of their leader, thought that by climbing up to the top of the city wall they could avoid the shooting of the crossbows. However, the defenders on the city wall relied on their own solid armor and fought desperately with the pirates. The pirates swarmed up the ladder in a crowded manner, but were soon swept down from the top of the city wall.

After all, most pirates were wearing leather armor, and some didn't even have any armor at all. Pirates who wore heavy armor either got shot by Ye Feng or were afraid of being shot by him, hiding in the crowd and shouting for other pirates to charge forward.

The soldiers of the garrison in Xiniya City were equipped with iron helmets, breastplates and shoulder armor made of iron plates. Their weapons included long swords, short swords and spears. Although the soldiers had been at peace for a long time, they were well-trained, physically strong, and had high morale. The pirates were no match for them.

In close combat, the soldiers of the defending army had the upper hand. Although the pirates outnumbered the defenders, they were still unable to gain a foothold on the city wall.

After another loud crossbow shot, two pirates were strung together like roasted fish by a bolt, the pirates' nerves could no longer bear it, one pirate shouted and threw down his weapon, turned around and ran back to the camp. Where there is one, there will be two. The entire pirate group collapsed instantly, all the pirates started fleeing back, but the deadly crossbow bolts were still tightly staring at them.

When they found that the crossbow bolts always nailed the slowest runner to the ground, they ran even faster. Although they were sure they couldn't outrun the crossbow bolts, Ye Feng gave them a glimmer of hope - as long as they could just run past their companions beside them.

After the pirates retreated to their camp in one breath, they found that more than 100 people were injured or killed in this attack. For pirates who usually only ambush and plunder, an attack with such a large number of casualties made them feel terrified.

As the pirates scrambled back to their camp on the beach, the defenders on the city walls erupted into a fervent cheer.

Even Diana was infected, holding a long sword in her hand and shouting loudly.

Seeing Oola's excited face turn bright red, imitating the crowd's style with a long sword held high, shouting loudly. Ye Feng felt somewhat amused. He reached out and patted him on the helmet, causing him to stumble. The wide helmet fell down and covered his eyes.

He hastily adjusted his helmet and complained: "What are you doing?"

"Big deal! You've only repelled a probing attack from the enemy, and yet you're acting like you've conquered Normandy or something!"

Some people struggled to carry food up, distributing it to the crowd. Only then did everyone feel that time had passed quickly in battle, and the sun had risen to its highest point in the day, now at noon. The warriors put down their weapons one after another, ran over to ask for a share, found a place by themselves, and wolfed it down.

Diana also took three portions back and handed one to Ye Feng and Oola each. Ye Feng picked it up and took a bite, the dry and hard oatcake and the salted meat that was like cowhide were not very tasty. But he hadn't eaten breakfast before being dragged here, and now he was really hungry, so he ate an entire wind roll cloud without hesitation.

He saw Oola eating with gusto and curiously asked: "You can actually eat something like this?"

Ouyang swallowed the thing in his mouth with a gulp, wiped the remaining crumbs from the corner of his mouth with his sleeve, and inexplicably asked: "Why can't I eat?"

"Diana said on the side, 'The reason why nobles are considered nobles is because they have to bear more responsibilities than others, and only then comes their rights. If you can't even endure this little hardship, what makes you think others will acknowledge you as a superior noble?'"

Ye Feng was taken aback, never expecting to be lectured by a low-level feudal and backward element. It's really worth letting those national civil servants come here to receive ideological education as well.

He was a bit unaccustomed to Diana's tone without fire, hehe smiled and stood up, with his hand on the city wall looking out.

Only to see the pirate camp across the way also quietly rising wisps of smoke, the battlefield temporarily subsided, both sides were seizing the time to accumulate strength and replenish supplies in preparation for another battle.
