Chapter Seventeen: They Call Me Devil Cloud
On this day, Yun Qi got up early and exercised in the yard. He simply ate a couple of mouthfuls of breakfast sent by old housekeeper Fu Sheng and then went out after saying goodbye.
Originally, Yunqi left so early today not for anything else. Today was his first day on duty at the Eastern Forbidden Guard. The Yang Mansion was not far from the Eastern Forbidden Guard Camp, and it would take about twenty minutes to walk there in modern time units. Yunqi didn't even bother to use the horse carriage from the mansion again. After arriving in Huadu, he had been busy running back and forth between the imperial palace and the Yang Mansion, and he hadn't really experienced the true scenery and human feelings of Huadu. It was no wonder that he did so, as he always left early and returned late when people were resting.
Walking along the bustling early market street, the wide road paved with bluestone was crowded with pedestrians and vendors on both sides, and the shouting voices were endless.
It wasn't long before they arrived at the East Forbidden Guard's camp, where soldiers were already standing guard at the entrance. Seeing Yun Qi arrive, one of them stepped forward and stretched out a hand to block his way: "This is the East Forbidden Guard, what brings you here?"
"Oh, haha, brother, I'm Yun Qi, appointed by the Crown Prince to take office here. Vice Commander Liao knows about it. From now on, we're like brothers."
Yun Qi also knew that his appointment was estimated to be known by only a few people beforehand, and after an explanation, he waited for the reaction of the soldiers.
Who knew the soldier would be stern-faced, with an inhumane expression, and loudly shouted: "Who is your own brother, standing outside waiting." After finishing, he leaned over to a similarly dressed soldier beside him and whispered a few words, and the latter immediately turned around and ran towards the inside of the camp, presumably to report to his superior.
Yun Qi didn't get angry, but muttered to himself: "Just like those soldiers in the barracks of later generations, with a stinky face." The soldier stood at attention after reporting to his companions, and no longer spoke. Yun Qi was curious, took a step forward, and stood facing the soldier. The soldier had no expression, nor did he; the soldier stood straight as a pen, and naturally, Yun Qi didn't back down either. Both of them stood upright like spears, face-to-face without any communication, but their eyes sparked with a tangible, crackling electricity.
After a while, Liao Yun personally rushed over, with the soldier who had previously reported back following behind him. As soon as Liao Yun arrived at the door and saw this scene, he couldn't help but burst out laughing, took a step forward, lifted his foot and kicked the soldier's butt. The soldier lost his balance and almost fell onto Yun Qi's body.
He reached out and supported the soldier, and suddenly remembered something. He shouted: "Brother Liao!"
"Oh, it's Yun Qi, little brother! You've come at just the right time, I have something private to discuss with you."
Liao Yun didn't say a word, and pulled Cloud Seven's sleeve into the tent. He didn't even care about the two soldiers standing guard. Along the way, Liao Yun and Cloud Seven chatted and laughed, praising how great Cloud Seven's crossbow was. Cloud Seven was also flattered, but suddenly became confused - he hadn't noticed a hint of cunning in Liao Yun's eyes.
With great difficulty, Yun Qi was dragged into the tent. Liao Yun hastily took down the crossbow that Yun Qi had given him last time from the wall and said with a frown: "Younger brother, it's like this. I made some crossbow arrows according to your method, their length is almost the same as yours last time, but why do I have deviations every time I shoot, and the force is not even as good as last time? Some didn't even hit the target, it's really strange."
"Is this for real? Bring me the crossbow bolts you made and let me take a look."
Yun Qi thought that the crossbow should not have any problems, and the problem must be with the arrow. Seeing Liao Yun calmly pull out a ready-made crossbow from his waist leather bag, before it even reached his hand, Yun Qi already knew where the problem lay.
It turned out that the crossbow arrows made by Liao Yun had not only uncut arrow tails, but also left many reverse thorns and wood chips around them. Such crossbow arrows would naturally not fly far and easily deviate from the target.
Yun Qi then again detailed the method of manufacturing crossbow arrows to Liao Yun, until Liao Yun nodded and guaranteed that he would not make any more mistakes. Only then did Yun Qi remember the purpose of his visit today, and opened his mouth to say: "Liao big brother, I wonder when I can officially take office?"
Liao Yun thought for a moment before slowly speaking: "Younger brother, let me remind you first, the hundred-man squad given to you is naturally the elite of the Eastern Forbidden Guards. Although they are all good soldiers, they are also the most difficult to manage troops. Since the previous captain was killed in action, no one has dared to take on this messy job. If you go, be extremely careful not to get caught up in their ways."
"Hehe." Yun Qi smiled calmly and said: "What Liao brother said, I have also considered it, but I think leading a team like this is more interesting."
"Haha, good one, Yunqi! I'm actually feeling a bit relieved now. Do you know why?" Liao Yun asked with a strong pat on Yunqi's shoulder. Seeing Yunqi shake his head in silence, he continued: "The previous captain of this Hundred-Man Squad said the exact same thing as you did today! Come on! I'll take you to see this powerful elite troop."
Two men came out of the tent, led by Liao Yun. Before long, they arrived at the northwest corner of the school field, where many soldiers were conducting daily training. There was a hundred-man squad with bare chests, shouting loudly and having an impressive momentum, practicing a small square formation different from the military array of the surrounding soldiers. Everyone held eight-foot steel guns in their hands, with long knives hanging from their waists without scabbards, emitting a strong aura of death and gleaming with a faint light. Each one had a robust physique, with muscles bulging out in blocks, presenting a beautiful and powerful appearance.
Liao Yun nodded in the direction of that hundred-man squad and said in a low voice, "See? It's this hundred-man squad. From now on, they'll all be under your command."
Liao Yun spoke for a while, but didn't hear any response from Yun Qi. He turned his head and found that Yun Qi was watching them train with great interest. Looking at the slightly upturned corners of Yun Qi's mouth, Liao Yun saw the kind of light in his eyes that a starving lion would have when seeing a plump rabbit, and he couldn't help but shiver. This made him even more eager to see what surprises Yun Qi had in store for him next.
After watching for a while, Yun Qi roughly understood their movements, physical condition and training level. Without looking at Liao Yun, he said: "Brother Liao, can I ask them to stop first?"
Liao Yun smiled and said: "You are now their superior, as long as you don't violate military discipline, whatever you want them to do, just give a direct order."
Yun Qiuhui returned a harmless smile to Liao Yun, turned his head and took a few steps forward, suddenly retracted the smile on his face, and sternly shouted: "Assemble!"
The soldiers who were training on the other side were startled by this sudden loud shout and collectively froze for a few seconds, turning their heads to look at this strange man in confusion. However, after seeing Liao Yun beside him, the well-trained soldiers quickly put down their weapons and formed a formation of ten rows of ten people each.
Liao Yun was still wondering what Yun Qi would do next, but instead saw Yun Qi turn around and walk towards him, whispering in his ear: "Brother Liao, you should introduce me to them."
"Oh! Right! Hehe!"
Liao Yundao said it was his own mistake, and he hastily walked forward to face the soldiers who were lined up in formation. He said: "Today, I'd like to introduce your new battalion commander to everyone. You've all seen him standing next to me. Now, let him give you a brief introduction."
The applause was like thunder, with everyone clapping in unison.
"Hello everyone, my name is Yun Qi, from Si Nan. From now on, I will be your new husband, and all of your future training will be arranged by me. You can call me Yun Fu Zhang, or... Mo... Gui... Yun!"
