Chapter One: The Military Flag
July 28, 1937 Sunny
I have seen countless scenes of war in movies, but I never thought that real war would be so terrifying.
"Boom!" A deafening sound, the entire world was shaking, my two eyes were shocked and saw stars, my head buzzed and became a mess, my ears could only hear a buzzing noise.
It wasn't until after a while that my consciousness gradually recovered a bit. When I opened my eyes and saw the scene before me, it scared me half to death...
Bullets and shells whizzed through the air, while on the ground were troops charging forward with bayonets. Judging from their uniforms and weapons, they seemed just like the Nationalist Party in a movie... I really hoped all of this was fake, but those soldiers felled by bullets, the splatters of blood flying everywhere, and the corpses blown into the air by shells only to fall back to the ground in pieces... told me that what was happening before my eyes was reality, stark reality!
How did I end up here? Where is this place? How can people still be fighting with these old-fashioned rifles at this time?
A string of questions has gotten me all muddled in the head, to the point where I've been frozen for a long time without any movement, just staring blankly at everything in front of me!
It's been a long time, I finally remembered that I am a student of the history department. Like many university students, my campus life is also playing cards, chasing girls, playing computer and surfing the internet. Just now, I went on a picnic with several classmates in the mountains, but to be honest, it was actually chasing girls, you know...
My name is Fang Xiang, the square of direction, the direction of orientation.
Although the direction is my name, it does not mean that my sense of direction is strong. In fact, the opposite is true. Isn't it? Just now in the outing, I got lost again and couldn't find my team, and as a result, I stumbled into a cave...
What happened to that cave?
It wasn't until then that I remembered the cave I had fallen into, and the white skeletons holding guns at the entrance really gave me a fright. However, this couldn't stop my footsteps from advancing towards the gold and silver inside the cave.
What a fortune it is! Piles of golden utensils, basins, and Buddha statues as thick as an arm... The fortune teller said I'd have good luck with money this year, and she was right! This can buy me many chicks! I seem to see countless luxury cars and beauties waving at me!
What sent shivers down my spine was that among these golden artifacts sat a mummy, just like an Egyptian pharaoh, with the flesh on its face dried into patches like tree bark, revealing a mouthful of grayish-black teeth, one of which, a canine tooth on the left, was still gold. Its hand grasped a samurai sword, exuding a fierce aura as if guarding this treasure...
Looking at the withered corpse holding a samurai sword, I associate it with the rifles next to several corpses at the entrance of the cave. So I guess they might be Japanese, and these treasures might have been looted from Chinese civilians, and they didn't have time to take them away when they escaped, so they piled them up here.
I have hated the Japanese since I was a child, and now that I think about it, they burned, killed, looted and plundered ordinary people, doing all sorts of evil. These golden treasures and riches, who knows how many Chinese lives and hardships are contained within? My initial fear disappeared, and with anger rising from my heart, I kicked the corpse in front of me to the ground!
I didn't expect that after the mummy fell over, a wooden box would be revealed underneath. At first, I thought it was some kind of precious treasure, but when I opened it, I couldn't help but feel greatly disappointed - it was just a small Japanese flag with sixteen blood-red rays on it, which was slightly different from an ordinary Japanese military flag.
It wasn't until later that I realized the true value of this military flag. During World War II, all the Allied forces, including China, yearned to capture such a flag but were unable to do so. If they lost one, the Japanese army would even risk sending out an entire division to search for it...
