Chapter 27: Warrior
Fighting is not scary, killing people is not scary either. The scariest thing is cleaning up the battlefield... because we have to face all sorts of suffering from the enemy, and sometimes even have to use our bayonets to end the lives of those who are dying...
The Japanese army was so close to us that under the dim streetlights, we could see the small mustache under their noses clearly. This also made it easy for us to aim at their heads with our rifles without any effort. However, the Japanese army didn't notice the danger coming from both sides and continued to run towards the military camp.
A sudden, urgent breathing sound came from behind, the female student tensed up and leaned towards me, she seemed to be seeking a sense of security from me. But what she didn't know was... actually, getting closer to me would only make her less safe!
But now I don't have the extra energy, nor do I dare to tell her these things, because this is a battlefield, and the enemy is right in front of me. As long as I'm slightly careless, it's a matter of being shot dead! In order to preserve my own life, I can only focus all my attention on the enemy, and then kill him before he kills me...
One minute has passed!
We didn't fire a shot, just quietly watched as the little devils followed the tanks and passed in front of us.
Perhaps the enemy's troops are still far away! I think so, after all, our ambush section is very long, and more than 4,000 people from the military training corps are all ambushing on this must-pass road to the barracks, at least two or three miles! So it's necessary to let the devils go deeper before attacking...
Two minutes have passed!
I was shocked to find myself seeing the tail of the Japanese army! The Japanese reinforcements coming to support cannot be just this few people, it seems like only a small squad... If that's really the case, then wouldn't my plan to lure the tiger away from the mountain be ruined?
Just as I was about to become despondent, I heard an even louder sound of footsteps...
"Damn it!" I couldn't help but curse, it turned out that the previous team was just a vanguard of the little devils, and the main force was still behind! Fortunately, we didn't start fighting earlier, otherwise we would have been overrun by the larger troops that followed!
From this point of view, the officers of the military training team are still very experienced. They can remain calm in such a situation just now. However, it's said that although the soldiers of the military training team are all new recruits, most of the officers are experienced veterans, so these things seem to be trivial for them!
The Japanese army came up quickly, unlike the vanguard troops, their formation was more dense and their defense was more lax. Some of them even had their guns still slung over their shoulders, completely looking like they were in a hurry.
Hit!
It is not clear who gave the order, but suddenly the entire street was filled with the sound of gunfire like popping beans. Countless windows and loopholes were spewing fire tongues at the Japanese army in the middle, bullets whizzing through the air with bright lines, shooting towards the Japanese army. After just one round of rain, the Japanese army was defeated and fled in disarray...
Do you want to hide from the Japanese army?
It should be said that the Japanese army did have a place to hide, after all, we were all shooting at the enemy through doors and windows in civilian houses. Although this had some advantages in terms of concealment, the disadvantage was that there were too many blind spots. The Japanese army seemed to only need to shoot into our firing blind spots and then throw hand grenades into the doors and windows.
But the problem is that the houses on both sides of the street are all ambushing our soldiers, and the firepower on both sides naturally forms a crossfire, so the dead corners disappear, leaving only one possibility for the Japanese army to be beaten passively.
Do the Japanese army want to escape?
The Japanese army did indeed do this, didn't they? They were worthy of being the Japanese army's ace unit, the 20th Division. As soon as they realized they had fallen into an ambush, they immediately organized their troops and divided them into two groups to break through on both sides of the street.
However, our army would not give them this opportunity. A cooked duck will not be allowed to fly away... The military training team's dozen or so light and heavy machine guns were all concentrated together to block the exits at both ends of the street. It was like a hail of bullets, with bullets pouring down on the center of the street like raindrops "whooshing"... wherever the bullets passed, the Japanese soldiers fell down in rows like harvested rice.
Blood, corpses and severed limbs soon filled the entire street, and the drainage ditches on both sides of the street also played their role, only to flow with blood-red fresh blood instead of sewage...
Bang! A gunshot rang out, and with a slight tremor on my shoulder blade, a bullet flew out of the barrel of my gun.
Due to the close distance, this bullet unexpectedly knocked down a Japanese military officer who was waving his command sword and continuously issuing orders to his soldiers.
He was knocked off balance by the force of the bullet, his command knife clattering to the ground with a "clang", and then he fell to the ground like a deflated rubber ball...
It's hard to describe the feeling, as it was always in a state of near hysteria or tension that I didn't know where I was, but this time I took out an enemy in a completely clear and conscious state.
No particular feeling of disgust, nor any sense of guilt, just a feeling that... with just a light press of the trigger, a life is ended, it seems too easy!
On the battlefield, human life is so worthless, sometimes just a bullet head or a small shrapnel... and a life will disappear forever in this world!
But I didn't have time to think too much, because I knew this was a battlefield, and every second I wasted might mean losing the life of a comrade or even my own life...
"Bang!" A gunshot rang out, and a Japanese soldier hiding at the corner of the wall across the street fell to the ground.
The Japanese soldier was very clever, he hid in the pile of corpses and slowly crawled to the window sill of the opposite house, then pulled out a hand grenade ready to throw it inside... but unfortunately, his movement was too big when he pulled out the hand grenade, so I shot him down before he could throw it.
What happened next was predictable. With a loud "boom", the grenade exploded beside his body, taking out two nearby Japanese soldiers. At this moment, I couldn't help but think of those supermarket promotions - buy one get two free!
"Bang!" This time it was a Japanese soldier holding an explosive pack who tried to rush towards the civilian house across the street.
I have to admit that the Japanese army fought very bravely. If it were an ordinary unit in this situation, I think they would have collapsed or even surrendered long ago, but the Japanese army did not. Not only did they not, but they were also trying to fight a hard battle with our army...
Although they have more powerful weapons than us, and their firepower is stronger than ours, this advantage cannot be brought into play when they are surrounded. So what can they rely on to fight hard with us? They rely on their explosive packs, they rely on their hand grenades!
What's this? The Japanese troops, one by one, were like madmen, hugging explosive packs and cluster hand grenades, charging towards the civilian houses on both sides... This crazy way of fighting really had some effect, many soldiers were intimidated by the Japanese troops' desperate fighting, just like the few soldiers next to me, who originally shot guns very smoothly, but now were so tense that they couldn't even open the gun bolt...
And this situation is obviously not just in our place, because several houses have appeared intense explosions, and then the Japanese army swarmed in like ants.
"Grenade!" I shouted loudly at the soldiers.
As I said, I pulled the fuse of a hand grenade and threw it out from the shooting hole. The soldiers' movements were not slow either, each one drew out the hand grenades from their waist, pulled the fuse and threw them out!
The little devils can throw hand grenades, why can't we? At such a close distance, hand grenades are undoubtedly the best weapon. Moreover, we are in a high position and the hand grenades can be thrown far. Suddenly, there was a burst of chaotic noise, and the streets below were filled with the bodies of the little devils who had been shouting and screaming just a moment before.
Soon the entire front line unfolded a hand grenade war... Although the devils were surrounded by us, unfortunately, our rifles had too slow firing speed, so they gave them an opportunity. But hand grenades are different, this thing explodes in a big piece, even if the power of hand grenades at that time was not great, but the shock wave and roar produced during the explosion were enough to make the enemy temporarily lose their ability to resist...
The momentum of the Japanese counterattack was soon effectively checked.
I don't know when, as I pulled out the last hand grenade and was about to pull the string and throw it down, I found that there was no longer an enemy standing below. I couldn't help but let out a sigh of relief, and with a thud, I sat down on the ground...
"Cease fire! Cease fire!" Although the voice was already hoarse and had changed, I still recognized it as Captain Xu's.
"Everybody has!" Another man was shouting through a megaphone at us: "Cease firing, fix bayonets..."
Fix bayonets? What's the point of fixing bayonets? I was taken aback, aren't bayonets only supposed to be fixed during a charge? But thinking about it, I still followed orders and fixed my bayonet on my rifle.
"Everyone has!" The loudspeaker continued to shout: "Sweep the battlefield!"
Warriors emerged from the houses in groups, formed a neat row and walked towards the corpses on the streets, giving two bayonet stabs to both the dead and the living...
So I realized that on the battlefield, bayonets are needed not only when charging!
What a scene it was, without being there in person you can never truly understand what the concept of "mountains of corpses and seas of blood" is. There isn't a single patch of clean land here, every step you take may trample on a puddle of fresh blood, every breath you take can smell the stench, every step forward may trip over a corpse... To the point that for more than ten days after, I dreamed about this scene every night!
It was only then that I realized: fighting isn't scary, killing people isn't scary either, but cleaning up the battlefield is the scariest... because we have to face all sorts of suffering from the enemy, and sometimes we even have to use our bayonets to finish off those who are dying.
But we cannot retreat, because we are all warriors! Warriors defending our homes and country!
