Three Kingdoms New Lü Bu
But it is said that Zuo Xuan, Che Niu and Wu Si are not enemies of Lü Bu and the Xiongnu army. They were also ambushed by Zhang Bao in Linjing, and the two of them lost their wives, children, cattle and sheep, and led more than 10,000 defeated soldiers to the north to surrender to the Xianbei, and arrived at Jiluozhai.
Jieluozhai is the only transportation route that crosses the Yinshan Mountains from north to south. Jieluosai is built on some mountain passes, with a series of barriers and beacon towers. Jieluosai was once an important military stronghold for the Han Dynasty in the western part of the Yinshan Mountains. The majestic Ming Mountain was originally a natural barrier. The main city of Jieluosai is located on the high ground outside the west side of the Halongnuo Valley, about three zhang (a unit of length) above the valley floor. The small city is built with stone blocks, using large stone blocks to build the outer wall, and smaller stones and sand to fill in the middle. The top of the city wall is about one chi thick, the base is nearly two zhang thick, and the remaining height is generally over two zhang, with the highest point reaching three zhang, making it extremely solid. The small city has a square shape, facing south-north, each side is about 100 steps long, and there are gates in the middle of the north and south walls, about one zhang wide, and all have square-shaped moats built outside the gate.
But Gao Shun led the troops of Lü Bu, brought two battalions from Beidi to Shuofang, and adjusted with Yang Feng's wolf riders, a total of 500 cavalry. With Yang Feng as the deputy general guide, secretly crossing the river and entering the Jiulü stronghold. Gao Shun saw that the terrain of Jiulü stronghold was dangerous and was a good place for ambushes. So he ordered the soldiers to ambush inside the inner city wall, opened the south-facing outer city gate, and waited for the Xiongnu army to flee north, and as soon as they entered the stronghold, they would shoot them to death.
Che Niu fled to Jiluozhai, saw that Jiluozhai was deserted, the outer city gate was wide open, and thought of entering the stockade first to rest for a while. He led his troops into the city, but did not expect that after entering the inner city, the city gate was tightly closed. Che Niu was puzzled when he saw the killing sounds rising from all sides of the city wall, and suddenly arrows rained down on the city. At this time, the Xiongnu soldiers were shot dead in large numbers, and the people inside the city rushed out in a hurry, while those outside did not understand what had happened and continued to push forward. Chaos ensued, with people trampling each other, horses running wildly, and countless deaths. I was shot off my horse in the chaos and immediately trampled into meat paste. Che Niu was hit by three arrows on his back but clung tightly to his horse's back, shouting as he charged towards the outside of the city.
More than 10,000 cavalry. By the time they escaped from Jiluo Village beyond the range of bows and crossbows, there were less than 8,000 cavalry left. The rest were either shot dead by Gao Shun and Yang Fu's soldiers or trampled to death by each other or horses.
Che Zhou's defeated troops had just retreated south for a few miles when they saw dust rising in the south, and it was Lü Bu and the Xiongnu general Qiang Hu joining forces to attack. Seeing Che Zhou's defeat, Lü Bu knew that Gao Shun had succeeded, so he rode forward on his horse, shouting: "Array...!"
The northern cavalry also immediately deployed on both sides of Lü Bu's vanguard, and with a single order from Lü Bu, they charged towards Che Zhou. Pian Shuozhuo led his eldest son Yu Fuluo and 20,000 to 30,000 Xiongnu troops to attack Che Zhou's army. With one wave of crossbow shots, Lü Bu knocked down hundreds of Che Zhou's cavalrymen, then charged forward and killed them. Seeing that although Che Zhou was defeated, this time it wasn't the situation where Che Zhou was attacking the north, so Lü Bu worried that Che Zhou's troops would be forced to fight to the death. Therefore, he led his army to fight along the edge of Che Zhou's army, without penetrating into Che Zhou's central army. As a result, the northern army suffered very few casualties, while the Xiongnu army directly charged into Che Zhou's defeated army. The two armies engaged in a chaotic battle, but Lü Bu shot from the edge with his crossbow.
When Lü Bu was fighting with the Qiang general, he saw another army approaching from the north. It turned out that Gao Shun had seen Lü Bu's troops arriving and led 500 wolf riders from Jiluo Camp to attack Cheshou Department directly. The Cheshou Department suffered a great defeat, and its soldiers fled in all directions. In the chaos of the battle, Lü Bu saw a brave soldier beside Yang Feng, wielding a long axe, chopping horizontally and vertically with great ferocity. Yang Feng was actually rescued by this soldier several times. Lü Bu was delighted to see this and immediately led his troops to attack. As they approached, they encountered Cheshou's guards being driven away. The brave soldier jumped onto his horse and swung his axe at Cheshou. Cheshou had three arrows in his back and was half dead, while his subordinates were trying to break through the siege but couldn't. However, the brave soldier was incredibly strong and managed to chop off both Cheshou's head and the head of his horse with a single swing of his axe.
Lü Bu exclaimed: "Good martial arts skills! Who are you?"
"Returning to General Hua: 'I am Xu Zhongmou, a native of Yang County in Hedong, and I currently serve as a bodyguard for Lord Yang.'"
Lü Bu, upon hearing the call for Xu Huang, secretly rejoiced in his heart. However, with the battle situation being urgent, he couldn't say much more. He simply said, "I've taken note of it." Then, he continued to fight and kill amidst the chaotic army. Lü Bu saw that after one of the charioteers died, the remaining troops scattered even further. So, he loudly shouted: "Those who surrender will be spared..."
Many of the northern troops were familiar with the Xiongnu language, and many of the southern Xiongnu understood Chinese. At this shout, the northern soldiers cried out in unison: "Those who surrender will be spared from death."
At that time, the remaining Xiongnu troops surrendered one after another, and the Left Shanyu's tribe disappeared from history.
After the war, Lü Bu and Qiang Qu divided the territory of Zuo Xianwang. Lü Bu recovered all the land north of the Yellow River and west of the river bend, including 30 miles of land on the western bank of the Yellow River, which were all under his jurisdiction. He also obtained more than 4,000 surrendered soldiers, more than 40,000 surrendered people, and 2-3 million cattle, sheep, and horses. Lü Bu ordered people to teach the surrendered Xiongnu people farming techniques. He built pastures, opened up wasteland, and established tuntian (military agricultural colonies).
From then on, the Southern Xiongnu and the Qiang Hu of Liangzhou all knew of Lü Bu's mighty name and did not dare to disturb the territory under his jurisdiction.
Lü Bu saw that the terrain of Jiluo Fort was treacherous and easy to defend but hard to attack, making it a rare strategic location. He decided to use Jiluo Fort as a base to regroup his forces and reward his troops, intending to appoint Yang Feng to guard Jiluo Fort.
Lü Bu was reorganizing his troops at Chicken and Deer Stockade, and he summoned Yang Feng to see him. At first, he praised him lavishly. Yang Feng had been feeling inferior since he led his men in rebellion; originally a Han general, he had been forced into banditry, disgracing the honor of his ancestors. Now Lü Bu not only accepted him and his followers but also pardoned their crimes and promoted them to marquis. Now that Lü Bu was praising him as well, Yang Feng's heart was overjoyed. Not only could he wipe out his past shame, but he would also have the opportunity to bring glory to his ancestors in the future; he might even smile in his sleep.
Lü Bu urged Yang Feng again and said: "Yang Junhou, you have been living in Jiluozhai for a long time. Do you know the strategic location of Jiluozhai?"
Yang Feng said: "The governor is right. Jiluozhai is an important transportation hub in the northwest of our great Han Dynasty, out of the Yinshan Desert. Unfortunately, the current court is weak and the military strength has been greatly reduced, so we can't take care of it. Alas... we can only let the northern barbarians run amok."
Lü Bu encouraged: "Why should General Yang lament? Today, the governor intends to reorganize his military power. I wonder if General Yang is willing to help me?"
Yang Fengxi said: "As long as there is a place where I can exert my strength, I will follow your orders, sir."
Lü Bu praised: "Yes, this is a great Han man. The terrain of Jiluozhai is treacherous and easy to defend but difficult to attack, it is a barrier that the northern barbarians cannot easily cross when they come south. Today, we have fortunately recovered Chēn Jiǎo. Therefore, I want to station heavy troops here to guard it. Firstly, this is a strategic location that cannot be lightly abandoned. Secondly, if we station heavy troops at Jiluozhai, once the Xianbei barbarians invade the border, this place can serve as a surprise attack force, attacking them unexpectedly from behind. Yang Junhou has long been stationed at Jiluozhai and must be very familiar with this place. Yang Junhou's wolf riders have many Xiongnu soldiers, we can also recruit some surrendered soldiers from Chēn Jiǎo to expand our forces to a thousand men to guard Jiluozhai. Forming a triangular formation with Shuofang and Linjing. Once the Xianbei barbarians invade, we can support each other."
Yang Feng was deeply moved by Lü Bu's trust in him, allowing him to select surrendered Xiongnu soldiers and expand his force to a thousand men. He spoke boldly, "Since Governor Lü trusts me so much, I will repay the governor's great kindness with my life."
Lü Bu laughed and said: "Haha... General Yang, why must you be so serious? Ah yes, I have another question."
Yang Fengdao said: "Sir, please speak."
Lü Bu said: "The other day, when our army was fighting with the enemy, I saw a soldier who was extremely brave in the midst of the chaotic army. I asked his name and he replied that it was Xu Huang, also known as Xu Gongming, from Yang County in Hedong, and he was one of Yang Mou's personal guards."
Yang Feng smiled and said, "There is such a person. My ancestral home is in Yang County, which is the same hometown as Xu Huang. When Han Zhao went south to find a place for us, I had asked him to take the opportunity to visit my old home. Unexpectedly, Han Zhao encountered Xu Huang in my hometown. The lord took us in, and when I invited Han Zhao to surrender, I also brought him back with me. I saw that Xu Huang was from the same hometown, and he wielded a good long axe, so I kept him by my side as a bodyguard."
Lü Bu smiled and said: "I see that Xu Huang is brave and fierce, I am very fond of him in my heart. I don't know if General Yang would be willing to give him up?"
Yang Feng listened to the music and said: "The adults like it, which is a great honor for me. It's also because Xu Huang's ancestors were virtuous, so I'll go call him to see the adults." Yang Feng went to find Xu Huang and soon brought him to meet Lü Bu.
Lü Bu said to Xu Huang: "Sir, are you willing to follow me?"
Xu Huan heard that and seemed to be in a difficult situation, he didn't know how to answer for a moment, looking at Yang Feng. Yang Feng saw Xu Huan's dazed expression, kicked him with one foot, saying: "How can Gongming be so dazed? The lord has invited you to follow him, it is because of your ancestors' virtues, don't you quickly thank the lord? In the future, following the lord, serve him well, don't make me, a person from Hedong, lose face. Also, don't forget about me, Yang Feng."
Xu Huang then bowed his head and said: "Thank you, sir, for your kindness."
Lü Bu listened and hastily got up to help Xu Huang, laughing loudly: "Haha... Got Gongming, my wish. Pass the order down. Xu Gongming has made great contributions by beheading Zuo Xianwang Che Niu, from now on he will be my right Shuaiwei Chang, assisting Left Shuaiwei Chang Cheng Lian to handle matters of my Shuaiwei army." Others who heard this congratulated Xu Huang one after another.
Thus. Lü Bu and the Xiongnu Chanyu joined forces, achieving a great victory in one battle. Yang Feng led 1,000 wolf cavalry to guard Jilu Mountain Stronghold. Wei Xu led 1,000 northern horsemen to guard Shuofang. Zang Ba led 1,000 northern mixed cavalry of surrendered Xiongnu to guard Linjing. Hao Meng led 1,000 northern mixed cavalry of surrendered Xiongnu to guard Lian County. He personally led Gao Shun and the remaining troops to escort the captured supplies and surrendered crowds back to the Beidi Prefecture's administrative center at Maliang. Along the way, officials from various counties came out of their cities to welcome them, and Lü Bu arranged for the Xiongnu surrenders to be settled along the way, ordering local officials to teach the Xiongnu farming and agriculture, selecting those who were good at raising horses to build pastures, and raising livestock.
