Three Kingdoms New Lü Bu
Lü Bu had just reached the gate when he bumped into someone. It was Dong Zhuo, who had been defeated by Guan Yu. Dong Zhuo saw Lü Bu and quickly grabbed his hands, saying: "Ah, Marquis of Wen, quickly gather your troops and follow me to pursue the remaining rebels..."
Lü Bu's face turned red with rage as soon as he saw Dong Zhuo. He swung his arm and said in a cold voice, "Hmph! What's the point of chasing after bandits? If you hadn't slaughtered those who surrendered, the Yellow Turbans wouldn't have rebelled again. Now that they've scattered and fled, it will be your fault if they cause trouble for the states and counties in the future."
Lü Bu was enraged that Dong Zhuo had killed the surrendered Yellow Turbans, causing them to rebel again. Suddenly remembering the bet he made with Dong Zhuo yesterday, he stretched out his hand and demanded: "Return my horse."
Dong Zhuo was taken aback for a moment and asked: "Huh? When did I ever fail to provide for the horses?"
Lü Bu's anger grew, and he grasped Dong Zhuo's collar, saying fiercely: "Have you forgotten the wager of yesterday? Hmph! No matter who it is in this world, if they owe me, don't think about defaulting on the debt."
Dong Zhuo suddenly remembered the bet he made with Lü Bu yesterday. He hastily spoke with a smile: "Hehe, Fengxian, where are you going? I, Zhuo, have never reneged on my debts. The Ferghana horse is right at the gate, just go and take it."
Lü Bu then released Dong Zhuo and rode back to the military camp on his horse, Swift Wind, leading the majestic Dawan horse. He didn't bother with other matters and only focused on preparing to break camp and return to Beijiang. Lü Bu had received an imperial order to eliminate Zhang Jiao. Now that Zhang Jiao was dead, Lü Bu didn't even report his achievement and instead returned to Daijun to govern the three counties and four territories of Beijiang.
Lu Zhi also knew that the Yellow Turban Rebellion originated from the imperial court, but unfortunately, the current imperial court was dominated by treacherous and deceitful officials, causing many virtuous scholars to abandon their posts. Lu Zhi also knew that annihilating the remaining Yellow Turbans would only treat the symptoms, not the root cause, and that the military expenses were enormous, with tens of thousands of soldiers being fed daily. Therefore, he dispersed the remaining Yellow Turbans and led his troops back to Luoyang to report their mission accomplished.
The remaining Yellow Turbans, Zhang Niujiao and Chu Feiyan, led their troops to escape into the Black Mountain, occupying the mountain as bandits. Liao Hua, Zhou Cang, Du Yuan, Liu Bi, Pei Yuanshao, Gong Dou and others fled south to enter Yanzhou, because they did not know the situation of the war in the south, they wanted to go to Yuzhou Runan to surrender to Bo Cai. The troops of Guan Hai and Bian Xi escaped into Qingzhou. In each place, the defeated troops were tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands, with some having more than two million.
June. The governor of Nanyang, Qin Jie, beheaded Zhang Mancheng, but Zhao Hong occupied Wancheng with over 100,000 people. Later, the Yellow Turbans were defeated by Sun Jian. Huangfu Song and Zhu Jun's army also suffered a great defeat at Xihua against Peng Tuo. The government army finally succeeded in suppressing the Yellow Turban Army in the Yu Province area. Subsequently, Zhu Jun, along with Xu Zhou, governor of Jingzhou, and Qin Jie, pursued Zhao Hong with 18,000 soldiers, killing him. The Yellow Turbans were then led by Han Zhong.
In October, Zhu Jun defeated Han Zhong by strategy, and Han Zhong surrendered but was killed by Qin Yue. The Yellow Turbans' Sun Zhong again occupied Wan City. In November, Zhu Jun defeated Sun Zhong, and the Yellow Turban party dispersed. However, it was heard that in the Western Liang region, the Qiang people had rebelled under the leadership of Bei Gong Boyu and Li Wenhou, with Bian Zhang and Han Sui as their military commanders, attacking and killing the Protector of the Qiang, Ling Zheng, and the Governor of Jincheng, Chen Yi.
In the twelfth month, Emperor Liu Hong granted a general amnesty and changed the era name to Zhongping. The various generals who had fought against the Yellow Turbans were promoted: Lu Zhi was made Marquis of Pingxiang and Minister of the Imperial Secretariat; Zhu Huan was made Right General of Chariots and Cavalry and Marquis of Xixiang; Huangfu Song was made Marquis of Duyang and Left General of Chariots and Cavalry. Liu Bei, thanks to Lu Zhi's recommendation, was promoted from a commoner to Magistrate of Pingyuan County. Only Lü Bu did not receive any reward for his achievements, and after beheading Zhang Jue he returned to the north on his own initiative; his merits and demerits cancelled each other out, so his official position and title remained unchanged. Lu Zhi often spoke up for Lü Bu, saying that since Lü Bu had personally beheaded Zhang Jue, his achievements were the greatest. However, there were many slanderous officials in the imperial court who did not want Lü Bu to gain too much credit, so Emperor Liu Hong used the pretext that Lü Bu had previously failed to guard the surrendered troops properly and refused to promote him. Lu Zhi could only sigh in frustration.
Lü Bu killed Zhang Jue and ignored the remaining Yellow Turbans, leading his army back to the northern border. He gave the fine Ferghana horse he had obtained from Dong Zhuo to Gao Shun, and devoted himself wholeheartedly to governing the four regions of Youbeiping, Yanmen, and Yunzhong in the north. As Lü Bu's border troops frequently raided the Xianbei tribes on the northern border, all the territories under his jurisdiction belonged to Lü Bu, and no one dared to disobey his orders.
Lü Bu's territory extends to Yunzhong County in the northwest, with the Yinshan Mountain Pass and other strategic locations. To the west lies the Han Dynasty's Wuyuan Commandery, beyond which is Shuofang. However, Wuyuan Commandery has now been occupied by the Xianbei, and Lü Bu does not have time to retake it at present. East of Yunzhong are the counties of Xiangyang, Shaling, Yunzhong, Yuanyang, Dingnang, etc. Beyond Dingnang is Yanmen Commandery. Northwest of Yanmen is the strategic pass of Dingnang, and beyond that, the Great Wall turns southward from the Dingnang Pass, passing through Yanmen, Maiyi, to Woyang County, where there is another strategic pass on the Great Wall.
The Yanmen Mountains have many dangerous passes, starting from the Yellow River in the west, there are Piantou Pass, Ningwu Pass, Xuangangkou, and Yanmenguan. To the east, there are Pingxingguan, Zijingguan, and Daomaguan. The counties under the jurisdiction of Yanmen include Shanwu, Wuzhou, Yinguang, Zhongling, Pingcheng, and more than ten other counties. The first pass in the country, Yanmenguan, is located north of Shanwucheng. After passing through Pingcheng County, it becomes Gao Liu Cheng of Daijun. To the east of Gaoliu are Yangling, Macheng, and other counties, and the Great Wall turns north again at Macheng. In the north, there are Sanggan, Meru, and other counties, and in the south, there are Daoren, Yangyuan, Donganyang, Dangcheng, Pingqu, Guangchang, and more than ten other counties. After passing through Xiaowutai Mountain to the east of Dangcheng, it becomes Shanggu County. It governs Zhuolu, Huairong, Chicheng, Gaoyuan, Yanqing, Juyongguan, and several other counties.
Lü Bu recovered the northernmost Great Wall in the north, and the northern Great Wall built along the Yin Mountains to the south was all under Lü Bu's jurisdiction. Lü Bu saw that the Yanmen Pass was located at the left of Yunzhong and right of Daijun, and the northern Great Wall formed a concave shape, with the northern gate of the Yanmen Pass located in the middle of the concave shape. Although the terrain of the northern gate was dangerous, it was also the throat of the concave shape. Therefore, he ordered people to repair the Yanmen Pass on a large scale and further increased the height and thickness of the northern gate of the Yanmen Pass. This place was the most dangerous and easiest to attack. Lü Bu then dispatched more troops to defend against it. He also placed many crossbow carts and stone-throwing machines made by Yu Qizi in various castles and passes, all for the purpose of strictly preventing the Xianbei from invading.
Zhang Jue and Chou Fei-yen led the remaining soldiers, numbering tens of thousands, to flee into Heishan. Along the way, they plundered cities and villages to obtain food. Many refugees joined them along the way, and by the time they reached Heishan, their army had grown to 200,000. After entering Heishan, the two men discussed that Zhang Jue was dead, the Yellow Turban Rebellion had failed, and what would be their future path.
Chu Feiyan then said to Zhang Niujiao, "Now that the great cause has been defeated, there is nowhere to go. We have many followers, and every day we consume a huge amount of food. If we can't find a way out, everyone will starve to death. Plundering villages is not a long-term plan either, Brother Zhang should think about the future."
Zhang Niujiao couldn't think of a good way out either, and didn't know what to do. He slapped his forehead in annoyance and said: "Alas... previously, there was Master to take charge, no need to worry. Now that Master is gone, I really can't think of a good solution."
Chu Feiyan advised: "My younger brother has a word, I don't know if it should be said."
Zhang Niujiao kicked one foot over and said: "Ass. You little kid have what idea quickly say. Don't rush to kill me."
Chu Feiyan patted the footprints left on Zhang Fei's body and said, "In the past, Lü Bu of Beihuang had a lot of benevolence and righteousness. Feiyan thought that Lü Bu should be a wise lord. Why not... we go north to surrender to Lü Bu?"
Zhang Fei's eyes widened in anger as he heard this. "Lü Bu is the murderer of my sworn brother," he said, "how can I go and surrender to him?"
Chu Feiyan said, "Lü Bu killed Tian Gong Jiangjun on the orders of the imperial court, let alone it was a past matter. I see that Lü Bu is quite benevolent and righteous, now with 200,000 troops, everyone wants to eat their fill. Big brother, aren't you going to watch as brothers starve to death?"
Zhang Chao said: "If there is nothing to eat, then plunder the counties and villages. If you want to surrender to Lü Bu, it's only possible if I, Zhang Chao, am dead."
Chu Feiyan saw that Zhang Niujiao's mind was made up and didn't say much more. He thought about which village or county town to raid next.
