Lü Bu interrupted: "Is it just that there are no more troops available?"
Gao Shun listened and admired in his heart, knowing that Lü Bu had thought further. He asked: "Indeed as the Military Marquis said, within the city of Jiuyuan there are only new recruits, and those who are good at fighting are scarce. How does the Military Marquis plan to raid the camp?"
Lü Bu's mouth slightly curved, and he said lightly: "Soldiers are valuable for their quality, not their quantity. Ten riders will suffice." He then held his halberd in one hand and grasped his bow with the other, shouting loudly: "Gather all soldiers, I have something to say!" After that, he strode calmly towards the city gate. This heroic bearing was extremely familiar to Gao Shun. It was exactly the same as when Lü Bu first went to raid the Xianbei nomads and rode out of the military camp gates on horseback.
Before long, the torches in the military camp were lit up. Although there were less than 100 riders left in Shuofang's army at this time, and some of them were injured by arrows. But as soon as they heard that Lü Bu had something to say, everyone was spirited and refreshed. What Lü Bu had done recently, the people of Shuofang's army had seen with their own eyes. At this moment, Lü Bu had become a spiritual pillar of the Shuofang army.
Lü Bu wore a sheepskin hat, a cuirass made of cowhide, and boots made of sheepskin. He sat on a black-maned horse. In his right hand he wielded the "Sky Piercer" halberd, while in his left hand he grasped the reins. On his back was a quiver full of arrows, and in front of him hung a bow with dragon-shaped ends. His face was handsome, his jaw well-defined, making him a dashing young general who inspired admiration in all who saw him. Moreover, an aura of majesty surrounded him, striking fear into the hearts of those within a hundred paces.
Lü Bu scanned the crowd, his chin slightly raised, the corners of his mouth slightly upturned, and his eyes narrowed as he said lightly: "The Xianbei thousand cavalry invaded my territory, are you afraid?!"
Most of the soldiers in the army are northerners from the border counties, many of whom have fled here after killing someone. The border people are either skilled archers and fighters from a young age or strong and fierce warriors. They are used to seeing the Xianbei bandits on the borders, but without a leader to lead them, they are weak and powerless. Everyone follows the trend, one person runs and everyone else follows. Now with Lü Bu's sudden attack, their pent-up ferocity is being stirred up.
One arm was wrapped in a bandage, and the soldier who had been shot by an arrow shouted as soon as he heard it: "What are you afraid of? The Xianbei slaves just have more troops and momentum. Today, follow the army Hou, die if you die, there is nothing to fear."
Lü Bu heard this and was delighted in his heart, and again shouted loudly: "Are you afraid?"
The troops all shouted in unison: "Fearless!"
Lü Bu laughed and said: "Since there is nothing to fear, who dares to follow me out of the city tonight to raid the barbarian slave camp? Those who are not afraid of death come forth."
The troops said they were not afraid, but when Lü Bu said he would go out of the city tonight to raid the Xianbei camp, they were all shocked and many hesitated. However, there were quite a few who really did not fear death.
Cao Xing stepped forward first: "I swear to obey General Cao to death. Count me as one."
Then Gao Shun, Zang Ba and others came out one after another, many of whom were shot and injured. Lü Bu abandoned the wounded and chose only the strong and robust ones, more than a dozen of whom had followed him in plundering nomadic tribes before. Later, he left Gao Shun to guard the city and direct, with Wei Xu assisting on the side. He got nine fine horses, including his own horse, making ten horses in total. They prepared to set out at dusk (7-9 pm Beijing time) after a full meal, and then set out to raid the camp at midnight (9-11 pm Beijing time).
In the army, there were many beef and mutton, Lü Bu ordered people to pick out the finest parts and cook them. He also picked out ten fine horses, sharp weapons, and all ten riders wore fine armor. Each person brought two days' worth of dry rations, and used oil ink to draw ghostly faces on their cheeks, then wrapped cowhide around the horses' hooves. At midnight, Gao Shun ordered the civilians to quietly remove the earth bags that blocked the city gate. Lü Bu and Gao Shun had agreed that after they left the gate, they would re-block it to prevent the Xianbei from launching a surprise attack on the city. They planned to quietly remove the earth bags again at midnight the next day and wait for Lü Bu's group to return to the city.
Lü Bu led the charge, seeing the strong men move away from the earth bags. The city gate had just opened a crack when he charged out on horseback, with nine riders closely following behind him. Lü Bu and his ten riders galloped straight to the Xianbei campsite from the road that the Xianbei soldiers had filled up during the day. The Xianbei camp was only two or three hundred yards away from Shofang City, and they arrived in an instant. The Xianbei did not expect that the people of Shofang, who would normally flee at the slightest rumor, would come to raid their camp tonight.
Lü Bu rode at the forefront, his right hand tightly grasping the Heaven-Shaking Halberd, urging his horse to run faster from time to time. Behind him, Zhang Liao, Cheng Lian and Cao Xing led nine riders in a tight "eight" formation, following closely behind Lü Bu, forming a human-shaped charging array that pierced into the Xianbei camp.
At the hour of hai, the Xianbei people were sleeping soundly, never expecting Lü Bu to launch a surprise attack. A Xianbei cavalryman was awakened by the sound of horse hooves, and as he lifted his head, rubbing his sleepy eyes with one hand, he had not yet realized whether he was dreaming or awake. Before he could react, Lü Bu's horse trampled him, crushing his skull, and blood and brains splattered everywhere.
Lü Bu and his ten riders charged into the Xianbei camp, killing their way north. Those who were still lying down were trampled by horses, while those who got up or stood up were stabbed to death with spears or hacked to death with swords. Whenever they came across a tent, they would overturn it, setting fire to the stove and burning it down. What's more, the Xianbei horses were tied up next to their owners' bodies, and in the dark of night, the horses were startled and ran wildly in all directions. Hundreds of horses trampled and ran wildly, making the entire Xianbei camp seem like a ghostly realm. The sound of neighing horses, shouting people, and wailing ghosts filled the air, creating a scene of utter chaos.
Lü Bu charged into the camp on horseback, and saw the Xianbei leader from earlier in the day. The leader was running out of a large tent, pulling up his pants and asking what had happened. Lü Bu's eyes were sharp and his hands were quicker. With a loud roar, he shouted: "Barbarian slave, accept your death!" Before the sound had faded away, the ghostly halberd in his hand had already struck at the Xianbei leader's throat. In an instant, a stream of blood shot out, and a human head had fallen from the leader's shoulders.
Ten men and ten horses, like the ghostly officials Yanluo and the ghostly soldiers, galloped northward, killing as they went. In just a moment, more than a hundred people had died at the hands of the ten horsemen or been trampled to death by their mounts. The number of Xianbei who were trampled to death by their own horses was even greater.
The Xianbei camp was suddenly attacked at night, and no one knew where the enemy's horses came from. They didn't even know how many enemy soldiers there were, they only felt that the horses were running wildly, and everywhere was in chaos. Moreover, they did not see their leader commanding the situation, and everyone was fleeing in all directions to save themselves. Those who were quick on their feet grabbed a startled horse and jumped on it, scattering in all directions. Those who were slower didn't even bother with the horses, pulling out their legs and running wildly in all directions. There were also those who were extremely frightened, only thinking of drawing their weapons, seeing people's shadows and slashing wildly everywhere, without even considering whether they were hitting their own people.
The battle was over in the time it takes to brew a cup of tea. Lü Bu unexpectedly defeated 800 Xianbei cavalry with just ten riders, without suffering a single injury or loss of horse. Over 100 Xianbei warriors were trampled to death by Lü Bu's ten horses. Another hundred or so were crushed by their own mounts. In the darkness and chaos, dozens more killed each other in the confusion, unable to distinguish friend from foe. Several hundred more fled in panic. By the time the Xianbei camp had calmed down, only a little over 100 riders remained. Seeing that their leader's head was separated from his body, with no one left to lead them, and fearing another surprise attack, they gathered together on their own initiative under cover of night, carrying their leader's corpse as they abandoned their camp and retreated eastward.
Lü Bu and his ten riders galloped north for over ten miles before stopping to rest. The ten of them gazed southward, seeing a faint glow of fire in the distance, and burst out laughing. Cao Xing laughed and said: "Haha, tonight's killing was truly exhilarating, it's the greatest joy of my life! General Lü is indeed a divine being. Since following General Lü, every task has been accomplished with ease and smoothness. Hahaha..."
Everyone says what he said is true and sincere words.
Lü Bu smiled and said, "Don't be too pleased yet, although we killed quickly tonight. However, we still don't know the layout of the Xianbei camp. We mustn't be careless and need to be cautious."
Just then, Lü Bu saw several figures running from a distance in the south. After his accident, Lü Bu's eyesight had greatly improved, and others only heard the sound of horses whinnying without seeing anyone. But Lü Bu had already inserted the Guǐ Jǐ into the ground, took out the Longshè Gōng, drew the bow and arrow, and said with his mouth: "Even if it's a scattered enemy soldier, not one will be spared." Then there was a "whooshing" sound. From afar came an "ah" of a miserable cry, someone had already been shot off their horse. Zang Ba exclaimed: "The Military Marquis is truly divine in his shooting!"
Those Xianbei cavalrymen who had fled in all directions saw that one of their companions had fallen off his horse after being shot by an arrow, and they knew someone was launching a sneak attack, but they didn't know where the enemy was. The remaining two men each leaned forward on their horses' backs and galloped wildly.
The saying goes that they ran into the enemy's gunfire, and it was these two men. The two Xianbei cavalrymen did not know where the enemy was, but simply galloped northward. Unexpectedly, Lü Bu's ten riders were in front of them. Zang Ba saw that there were only two riders coming, and he shouted angrily. He rode his horse to meet them, swinging his sword to chop. Cao Xing saw that Zang Ba's horse was fast, and he did not want to fall behind either. He kicked the horse's belly in anger and chased after him. The two men raised their swords and chopped down, and the two Xianbei cavalrymen suddenly realized that the enemy was right in front of them. One of them was careless and was chopped off his horse by Zang Ba and Cao Xing.
