Chapter 2: Blazing Chariot

  Insufficient balance

Da Tou and Xiao Yang were tied up with five flowers, kneeling on the shooting range. Two classes of soldiers held submachine guns in two teams, and they would execute the death penalty with just one order. The entire division of over 10,000 people quietly looked at them, the whole training ground was quiet except for the sound of the wind and people's heavy breathing.

Dai Bing's stern gaze swept the entire room, and he said in a deep voice: "I think everyone remembers the three major disciplines and eight points of attention of the Chinese army? How can our Chinese army defeat Japan and the United States, these military powers, with the simplest weapons and win a place for our motherland in the world? It's because our predecessors won the hearts of the people with their actions! Not taking a needle from the masses, sleeping in an apple orchard, being tired and hungry but not having anyone reach out to pick the apples that are already red on top, this is the true essence of our Chinese army's invincibility!"

"A 17-year-old girl has to bear the heavy burden of supporting her family, and under such pressure, who can't understand if she makes a slight mistake? But in our military camp, there are such scoundrels who take advantage of an underage girl! Comrades, this is our own home, and these townspeople living next to the military camp are our family members! If we treat our family like this, what will these scoundrels become when we charge into the disputed territories between China and India? Will they become bandits, hoodlums? Will they also burn, kill, and loot with impunity, just like the Japanese did when they occupied China?"

"I'm telling you soldiers, no matter where we are, as long as I'm your commander, when we encounter this kind of scum, my method is just one word: kill!"

A stern atmosphere circulated on the training ground, as Da Bing raised his right hand and slashed it down fiercely, bellowing: "I command, execute the shooting immediately!"

  "Whoosh......"

More than twenty rifles were raised at the same time, and the sound of gunfire suddenly rang out on the training ground. Dozens of blood flowers burst from the bodies of Da Tou and Xiao Yang, and when they finally fell to the ground, they had been shot into a mass of flesh and blood. The white and red mixed with the yellow liquid that the two men had lost control of their bowels and urinated before they were shot, splashing four or five meters away. Their bodies no longer looked human. The representative of the small town residents standing behind the battalion commander immediately turned pale and knelt on the ground, vomiting wildly.

This execution became the oath-taking rally for X Division's expedition, hundreds of military vehicles were parked outside the barracks, and armored tanks could be seen rumbling by everywhere, military trucks with camouflage nets towing large-caliber howitzers lined up on the Xinjiang-Tibet highway, after refueling at the barracks, they left in a hurry without even having lunch. The atmosphere was filled with war everywhere, whether it was to be sent to the battlefield or to stay in the barracks by order, every face was filled with solemn expressions.

This time, the X Corps is going to dispatch the 1st and 2nd Regiments to the battlefield. The 1st Regiment I belong to will be dispatched to the Tibet border to assist local friendly forces in establishing a strategic defense line, blocking the Indian army's crazy provocation. It is said that the special anti-terrorism brigade led by Pu Shenna has completed its counter-terrorism mission in Urumqi and has taken soldiers to Lhasa for battle. Our 1st Regiment may meet with the anti-terrorism brigade in Lhasa.

The vast majority of the border areas between China and India are in Tibet, with a small portion in Xinjiang. The boundary between the two countries starts from the Karakoram Pass in the west to the tri-junction of China, India and Myanmar in the east, with Nepal and Bhutan in the Himalayas sandwiched in between. Among China's land borders, the Sino-Indian border is particularly special and mysterious.

It is special because China and India have never signed a border protocol in history, so there are no boundary markers in the Sino-Indian border area. In this case, the length of the two countries' borders cannot be accurately measured, only "about 2,000 kilometers long".

The entire Sino-Indian border is divided into three segments: the eastern, central and western sectors. The total disputed area is approximately 125,000 square kilometers, of which the eastern sector accounts for about 90,000 square kilometers, the central sector about 2,000 square kilometers, and the western sector about 33,000 square kilometers.

This land of over 200,000 square kilometers is larger than China's Fujian Province. For this piece of land, China and India had a self-defense counterattack war in 1962, after which it has been relatively calm.

However, in recent years, with the possession of the lowest level of nuclear attack power, the Indian army has begun to strengthen its border defense forces, expanding its paramilitary forces along the Sino-Indian border, and gradually forming a coordinated border defense system consisting of the army, police, intelligence, and local troops.

Ranjan Kumar, Senior Fellow at the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA), recently wrote an article on India's main countermeasures against China, stating: (1) Strive to resolve the Sino-Indian territorial dispute as soon as possible.

Lacanwal said that the long-term strategic and economic contradictions between China and India are irreconcilable, and China is a powerful potential opponent of India in the long run. India should seize the historical opportunity to strive for an early solution to the territorial disputes that affect Sino-Indian relations, thus avoiding fighting on two fronts, and re-adjusting its military deployment to gain a decisive military advantage over Pakistan, a real military adversary.

  (2) Strive for nuclear parity with China.

Lakshman Achuthan claims that to counter China's strategic challenge, India needs a credible military deterrent. India can effectively deter China from using nuclear weapons and missiles against it only if it has "minimum credible nuclear deterrence". With the Pokhran nuclear test, India has crossed the nuclear threshold. The next focus of India's military strategy is to accelerate the development of a "triad" of land, sea and air-based nuclear attack systems to seek nuclear parity with China.

As China's economic strength and international status continue to rise, the Indian military's agitation has also grown. They have adopted a policy of nibbling away, gradually advancing across the border line. In the eastern sector, they have occupied nearly 50,000 square kilometers of Chinese territory north of the traditional customary line through military force. In the western sector, they have forcibly incorporated 30,000 square kilometers of Chinese territory into Indian territory. After continuously attacking multiple military outposts within our country's borders, they have repeatedly provoked armed conflicts and killed or injured many of our border defense personnel.

It has come to this: the Agreement on Confidence Building Measures in the Military Field Along the Line of Actual Control in the India-China Border Areas signed by China and India in November 1996 has become a worthless piece of paper.

The real trigger for the war was the "Red Eagle Submarine Incident" five months ago. In the Aksai Chin area, China's highest-altitude naval force is stationed. When encountering a naval patrol, under the clear blue sky and white clouds, the warship cuts through the mirror-like lake surface, and tens of thousands of water birds take to the sky, a breathtaking sight.

The Red Eagle submarine was on a routine patrol mission when it discovered an unidentified foreign submarine entering the country's territorial waters, conducting espionage work on the country's maritime defense line. The Red Eagle pursued the order and inadvertently entered Indian territorial waters. The Indian Navy had long been prepared and placed more than 40 mines around the Red Eagle within two minutes.

The Red Eagle submarine was forced to float at a depth of sixty meters, the Chinese government repeatedly negotiated with India, but India refused to remove the mines! Until finally, some patriotic businessmen from Hong Kong stepped forward as representatives and pressured India, threatening to withdraw their investments in India if the mines were not removed. Considering the impact on the domestic economy caused by the joint action of the Hong Kong businessmen, the Indian military finally removed the mines. When the matter was settled, the Red Eagle had been stuck underwater for a full sixty days!

Lack of oxygen and fresh water, when the Red Eagle surfaced, only three people walked out, one helmsman, one navigator, and one sonar detector. In order to ensure that they could drive the submarine back to China until the last second, the three of them got extra fresh water and oxygen, while everyone else including the captain died at their posts!

(Xiao Yao: Let's observe a 30-second silence for the martyrs. Although this scene has been slightly altered, it is true! The diplomatic influence of an entire country cannot even compare to the joint protest of a few wealthy businessmen. What kind of outrage is this!)

Looking at the miserable appearance in the submarine, the Chinese soldiers finally went into a frenzy. The military doctor Xiao Sun inside the submarine was still tightly holding onto the water bottle and oxygen generator when he died. His job was to rush over to any soldier who fell down and give them a mouthful of water and a breath of oxygen. When he died, the water in his water bottle was full! Even at the moment of his death, he did not take a sip of water or a breath of oxygen for himself.

Looking at the young grandson who died suddenly from a heart attack, this 22-year-old hero still maintained his standing posture in life. People can still find intense fatigue and sadness on his face. According to survivors, he had to run back and forth in this 60-meter-long submarine at least 50 times a day, rushing to rescue soldiers whose lives were hanging by a thread, distributing various supplies to them!

Witnessing this scene, countless people were moved to tears. When the numerous letters and photos of Little Sun were sent to the provincial military district and then transmitted to the central government, the national leaders were finally touched by this photo. China's long-silent fire chariot was finally refueled under the push of a young hero.

In the past, I and Zhang Sun Ting and Yang Qing simultaneously stood in front of the military camp gate, facing Xiao Sun's giant portrait, paying a solemn military salute. When we three stood proudly silent, a must-kill, must-win, must-die aura slowly rose from our bodies, forcing the surrounding soldiers to involuntarily retreat several steps, clearing out a circle with a diameter of five meters around us.

Dai Bing gazed at the three soldiers with an aura of charging into battle, and a faint smile finally appeared on his lips. He asked in a loud voice: "Fu Yinxue, Chang Sun Ting, how's your marksmanship now? You've disrupted the entire division's rest for twenty days, shouldn't you show some results?"

I quietly walked out of the ranks, I took a shooting target, suddenly let out a loud roar, and forcibly pulled out the entire steel frame welding gun target. Carrying it 100 meters away, I inserted the target into the ground again. Closely attached to the target, Long Sun Ting and I, 100 meters apart, simultaneously raised our submachine guns.

  "Dada... dada..."

The sound of the submachine gun firing in bursts echoed through the training ground, with bullet holes constantly appearing on the target. Long Sunting and I remained unmoved, our hands steady as if cast in steel, each of us firing a shot from our guns at the target next to the opponent's.

We almost simultaneously finished the bullets in the magazine, and Dai Bing nodded slightly. Two soldiers rushed over quickly and reported loudly after a while: "Chang Sun Ting, 30 shots, 287 rings! Fu Yan Xue, 30 shots, 279 rings!"

The result left all the commanders present aghast, with bullets flying around them, yet these two men still managed to score at least 9 rings per shot, which had already transcended the realm of shooting.

Yang Qing crawled into the training trench, and Chang Sun Ting and I raised our submachine guns at the trench where he was hiding. Just as we were changing magazines, two gunshots came from the trench, and after a brief moment of surprise, he fell silent again. No matter how crazy we swept again, he refused to show his face. After we fired all five magazines on our bodies, he had fired a total of ten shots. The target scorer finally called out in a strange tone: "99 rings!"

"Boom!" The surroundings were in an uproar.

"Alright, very good, calm and composed, yet not losing the hot-bloodedness and arrogance of a Chinese athlete, this is what a soldier of the Chinese army should be!" Da Bing's eyes were full of admiration as he walked up to us and looked at me saying: "Fu Yinxue, you always remind me of a friend I've never had the chance to meet in person. You both have a quality that's daring, unconventional, and yet somehow able to influence those around you, making them follow your lead without realizing it. Do you have a girlfriend?"

Seeing me nodding vigorously, Dai Bing shouted: "Even if it's for your girlfriend, you little brat, you have to come back alive for me!"

He suddenly looked gloomy, and in a low voice that was almost inaudible, he said: "The poor have no fixed abode by the river, still a person in the deep boudoir dream. It wasn't until this moment that I understood the helplessness of these two lines of poetry, she was right, I'm a bit too sentimental, suddenly having another daughter, it really made this old dad a little worried, am I going through menopause?"

Staring at the muttering substitute brigade commander, I almost exclaimed in surprise.

(Xiao Yao: That stupid B who's always advertising in my guest room, are you annoying or not? That trashy book of yours, deleted once and again, if you really want to write well, why do you have to go around mixing with other people's book reviews to make a living? Now the internet is all over the place, it's hard to find satisfying good books, it's because the threshold is too low, anyone can come in and mess around. Annoying!)
