Chapter 2: Dawn II
Two
"Hahaha... Blue? I don't know how to say you're good, are you embarrassed or not?" Ever since Zhang Chongyu discovered that Xiao Yi had played hooky during the last physical education class, Xiao Yi always teased him about it.
Lan C's face turned red with anger, she wished she could throw a bomb to make the world quiet. She was even more regretful that day for not being careful enough, and her deep remorse couldn't change the impression the person she liked had of her. Thinking of this, Lan C let out a sigh of regret.
As soon as Zhang Chongyu walked into the classroom, Lan gave a sudden start and immediately covered Xiao Yi's mouth, signaling her to stop talking. Xiao Yi coughed awkwardly several times, smiling at the bewildered boy with a puzzled face.
"I feel like something's off about this atmosphere, it's making me anxious." Zhang Chongyu put his backpack in the drawer and turned around to look at the two girls.
"The weather is great today." Xiao Yi supported her cheek with a smile that was not quite a smile as she looked at Zhang Chongyu.
"What the heck! It's so hot I don't even recognize my own dad."
Lan Er leaned back in her chair, smiling quietly as she watched the two people chatting and laughing. Xiao Yi seemed to be the favorite child of heaven, with an innate noble aura and a superior sense of existence. She had a new set of beautiful clothes every day of the week, and a sweet smile that made people involuntarily like her at first sight. But what Lan Er envied most was Xiao Yi's incredibly good relationships - it seemed like both boys and girls especially liked her.
Zhang Chongyu, on the other hand, was another extremely popular character, with a more flexible mindset than even the math teacher. Although he was quite mischievous in his daily life, his natural intelligence kept his grades consistently stable among the top ten, and no matter how hard others tried, they couldn't surpass him by even a little bit. Moreover, he had a very handsome face, was neat and clean all over, and was extremely humorous; every girl in the class liked him, and his unique charm was like a powerful magnet that deeply attracted everyone.
Even though I was rejected by many people when I first joined this class, after being with them, I clearly felt that everyone's gaze on me had softened a lot. So I started to regard them as lucky stars, happily watching them make trouble beside me every day, sharing snacks brought from home, and unknowingly taking root in my heart, occupying a very important position. What kind of existence am I in their hearts?
"Why do you always look like your soul has left your body?" Zhang Chongyu waved his hand in front of Lan's eyes a few times, puzzled. The girl slapped his hand away and glared at him, "Are you trying to die?"
"Hmph, following me around has made your courage fatter, speaking without reserve, congratulations, you can graduate now." After finishing, she still threw a flirtatious glance, the girl let out a snort of laughter, with uncontainable delight in her eyes.
Xiao Yi stretched out a long, lazy waist, her fingers curled around the ends of her hair, looking cute and playful. "It's so hot outside, I really want to eat watermelon." After saying that, she glanced at Zhang Chongyu with intention.
"I know where to buy sweet and cheap watermelon, I'll go buy some after school!" Zhang Chongyu said with a proud look at Xiao Yi, patting his chest.
The first class in the morning is math, I don't know why math classes are always scheduled for the first class in the morning. This arrangement makes the day start from the morning and makes people feel annoyed, especially for those who have been hovering around the passing line of math scores, they will be particularly anxious when it comes to math class.
Blue eyes gazed at the middle-aged math teacher, who was in his 40s, with a slightly receding hairline, earning him the nickname "Old Baldy" among the classmates. It's said that his son is also in the top class and excels in math, with a similarly bald head. Thinking about this made her feel a little better - are people who are good at math prone to baldness? Luckily, she wasn't good at math. Blue eyes adoringly gazed at the figure sitting in front of her, her eyes involuntarily drifting to the back of the boy's head, where his thick black hair displayed a healthy color, forever an exception.
Blue tightly locked his figure, looking at him thoughtfully nodding to the old bald man. The old bald man was instantly grateful and looked at him as if inspired, increasing his volume, as if the math class was only for him to listen. Blue also liked to see him lower his head quickly taking notes or confidently answering the questions raised by the old bald man. Of course, the old bald man would always say with a smile in front of the whole class: "You all have to learn from Zhang Chongyu, I don't have to worry about it!" Every time he heard him praise Zhang Chongyu like this, Blue felt as if he was being praised himself and couldn't hide his pride, looking at the back of his head slightly raised with a happy smile.
"Blue! The teacher is calling you! Stand up quickly!" Xiao Yi used her elbow to gently push Blue, pulling the girl's thoughts that had drifted thousands of miles away back in an instant.
"Huh?" Lan Yu hastily stood up and looked at Lao Tu in confusion.
The old bald man sighed helplessly, "You said you don't even know what you're thinking about in class, you can't keep up with the teacher's progress, what are you doing here? Zhang Chongyu is sitting right in front of you, how come you didn't learn well at all?"
"I..." Blue? He lowered his head and glanced at Zhang Chongyu sitting in front of him, who didn't turn around, leaning against the back of the chair with a careless attitude. His heart suddenly sank slowly, shame like a huge net wrapped around his body, feeling suffocated.
"Sit down first, don't block the students behind you from listening to the class," Lao Tu said with a look of impatience, then whispered, "Sitting so far forward and not paying attention to the lesson, if you don't listen carefully, I'll have to adjust your seat."
When she heard his words, Lan was like being struck by a deafening thunderclap, her mind suddenly went blank. She stared tensely at Lao Tu's constantly opening and closing mouth, as if she were in a silent world where people communicated only through actions and gestures, so that she wouldn't have to worry about thinking of the next sentence to say.
When you like someone, you always want to show your best side in front of them, but it seems that the opposite is often true. Not only do they not see the best version of yourself, but every time they see the most embarrassing and awkward side of you. The arrogant, the tolerant, the inferior, the insignificant self that is deeply attracted to you, how can I work hard to be worthy of standing by your side?
It's finally the weekend, as soon as the bell rang, the classroom started to get excited, "Another wonderful weekend!" Xiao Yi said happily while putting her books into her backpack.
"Where are you planning to go this weekend?" Zhang Chongyu handed his notes to Xiao Yi, every weekend Zhang Chongyu's notes would be borrowed by Xiao Yi to take home, in Xiao Yi's words, his notes were easier to understand than listening to the old bald man teach in class.
"I'd rather stay at home and read books, my mom doesn't even let me go out and play." Xiao Yi said helplessly.
"What a pity, I was planning to go swimming this week."
Blue? C clenched his teeth nervously and looked at Zhang Chongyu, saying: "I can go with you. I'll tell my mom that I'm going to a classmate's house to do homework, she'll definitely agree."
Zhang Chongyu shook his head and looked at her, "Forget it, next time, let's go when everyone is here, it'll be more fun."
Blue eyes fell, nodded silently, and didn't speak again.
"Right, Xiao Yi didn't you say you wanted to eat watermelon? Come on, I'll buy some for you!" Zhang Chongyu pulled Xiao Yi and headed straight downstairs.
Lan quickly grabbed her school bag and chased after him. The campus path was lined with the shadows of tall trees, which swayed gently in the wind like a dance.
Zhang Chongyu slowed down his pace on purpose, and when he turned the corner of the school path, he caught a glimpse of a girl running up to him out of the corner of his eye. After crossing over the back wall of the school, he saw an old melon farmer sitting on the ground with a worn-out pushcart in front of him, which was full of green and shiny watermelons. The old man slowly fanned himself with a straw hat.
"This old man's watermelons are all grown by himself, especially sweet!" Zhang Chongyu seemed very experienced, patted the watermelon with his hand, "Hmm, this one is ripe, take it." After finishing speaking, he handed the watermelon to Xiao Yi and reached into his backpack to grab some money.
Zhang Chongyu and Xiao Yi were carrying watermelons when they turned around to see Lan Zhan following behind them. Xiao Yi was startled and said, "How did you follow us without making a sound? You're like a ghost."
"I..." Lan looked at Zhang Chongyu with embarrassment.
"Want some watermelon?" Zhang Chongyu raised the watermelon in his hand, with a mischievous grin on his face.
"No, it's not."
"Here you are, I bought this for you." Zhang Chongyu said as he handed her the watermelon.
"Alright, you take it then." Xiao Yi smiled and patted the watermelon in her hand, "He's already bought one for me."
"I... I'll give you money." Lanyu said as she hastily took out her purse, "How much?"
"No need, I've got it." Zhang Chongyu smiled and pinched her hand holding the purse.
Blue? With a complex mood, she hugged a big watermelon and followed them step by step as the sunset fell. Sweat kept falling down her cheeks, wetting her short hair, but her heart was filled with joy. The watermelon in her arms was like the expectation she had been holding for a long time, finally getting a response.
