Chapter 41: Right Before One's Eyes
The young doctor's home seemed far away, and the carriage changed horses at each relay station every day, racing day and night without stopping.
"Yigubu, your home isn't that far away, is it? Where are you taking us?"
How could Yigubu be working in a town so far from home? Charlotte thought he might not be going back home.
Yigu thought Charlotte was tired, so he took out a cushion from under him and handed it to her.
"Here you go, it will arrive soon, why don't you lie down and take a nap?"
Yi Gu Bu had only one cushion and could only apologize with a smile to Mary.
"Mary, come lie down."
Charlotte handed it over to Mary, who had been sitting for a long time with an aching back and was eager to lie down and rest for a while. Charlotte pulled her over.
"Come quickly and sleep."
Stroking Mary's hair, Charlotte said with concern,
"I don't know how she is now, has that matter been resolved?"
Yi Gu said with a smile
"It's a pity you didn't see who killed Ed, otherwise brother would have a clue to crack the case. This afternoon is the day of public trial, if there's a result, brother will send me a letter, and we'll know as soon as we get home."
"Where is your home? Why haven't you arrived yet?"
Nan Di
Are you a spy sent by Windsor?
As they approached Southland, Charlotte could smell the thick smoke of gunpowder, and everywhere was the scene of sharpening knives and practicing soldiers. The road they were taking was a major thoroughfare leading to Southland, with many military camps along the way. Slowing down to let a column of soldiers pass through, Charlotte got out of the carriage and sat beside the coachman. Igu seemed concerned about the situation outside as well, and since there was no place to sit, he stood behind Charlotte. Charlotte turned her head and saw that he looked serious, pursing his lips - what could a doctor possibly see?
The soldiers marched in unison, their footsteps ringing out with a metallic sound, and it was clear that they had been trained for years. They carried spears on their shoulders, the sharp tips glinting in the sunlight and piercing Charlotte's eyes. She suddenly lost her enthusiasm for admiring the majestic soldiers and turned to push aside the curtains of the carriage and get inside. Yigubu was pushed out of the way and stumbled, falling off the carriage with a thud. Brushing off the dirt on his clothes, Yigubu was about to complain when he realized that the culprit had already escaped into the carriage.
Although their carriage was unassuming, it had also undergone strict scrutiny before being allowed to pass through. The scene inside the South Land was completely different from what Charlotte saw outside. People lived a peaceful and joyful life, unaffected by the hustle and bustle outside.
"If the Duke of Windsor wins, he will be a king for an era."
Charlotte didn't refute, if she hadn't seen it with her own eyes, she wouldn't have believed that this place was more prosperous than the royal capital and gave people a stronger sense of belonging. The children laughing and playing on the streets made one feel as though they were in heaven, Charlotte had once thought about settling down here for a moment.
"I can only pray for them and hope the war won't affect these innocent people."
Yi Guobu followed Charlotte's gaze towards the group of young children, and his pupils became moist and soft.
"I know what you're thinking. You think the royal family is starting a war over personal grudges, and you pity these innocent civilians."
In Yigubu's words, Charlotte's mind was clarified. She had never understood why the Duke of Windsor did so. In her consciousness, Windsor absolutely could not be called a good person. He was an extremely selfish person.
"But I think the Duke of Windsor didn't do anything wrong, you can understand it as personal worship, haha, ninety-nine percent of people in Nantou have a worship attitude towards the duke, and the remaining one percent is probably here,"
He pointed at his brain with his finger.
"Not enough here, clever?"
Charlotte thought that Yigubu could say something enlightening, but it turned out to be like this. A doctor is just a doctor, don't have too high expectations of him!
Having walked with the young doctor, Charlotte sensed from his daily habits that he might not be a commoner. Arriving at the young doctor's house, it was as expected, of course not as luxurious as the rooms she used to live in, but Lucas' family is famous nationwide for its wealth, and it's pretty good too, about the same as Martia's house.
Charlotte was afraid to sleep alone, but she didn't dare say it. She used the excuse that Mary was still young and needed her care to get a small roommate. Yigubu considered that the two were far away from home and had no relatives around, so he arranged for them to live together and comfort each other.
The next day after arriving at Yigubu's house, he received a letter from Charles. After reading it, Yigubu looked gloomy and Charlotte had a bad premonition. She reached out to take the letter, but Yigubu held it up high with his tall stature.
"Don't look anymore, don't grab, I'm doing it for your own good!"
Charlotte pushed a hand against Yigub's chest and bellowed at him.
"What right do you have to deceive me! This is my family affair!"
Yi Gu stepped back one step, his hands still raised high
"Charlotte, aren't you hiding something from me too? Don't look at me like that, okay?"
Yigubu's behavior made Charlotte's unease in her heart more and more turbulent, she couldn't control her emotions, a tear rolled down from the corner of her eye.
"What have I hidden from you? Didn't you guess long ago that I'm Lydia's daughter?! You still won't let me see! Scoundrel!"
The soft and glutinous texture with a sobbing tone almost made Yigub surrender.
"Have you guys had a fight?"
Mary cautiously poked her head out from the gap in the door, her big round eyes full of fear. Charlotte quickly turned around and secretly wiped away tears. Mary was most afraid of adults quarreling, usually she would hide far away, but this time it was different, the one quarreling was Charlotte, she couldn't run away. Squeezing through the gap in the door, Mary closed the door and walked to Charlotte's back, hugging her leg tightly.
"Charlotte got very angry, okay? Mary is scared."
Taking a deep breath, Charlotte suppressed her anger and turned around to hug Mary, smiling as she coaxed her.
"I'm not angry, let's not quarrel anymore, we won't stay here."
She dragged Mary away, intending to put her to sleep before coming back for Iguvua.
"Tomorrow is the family gathering, there are important people attending, so I need to go prepare now."
Charlotte stopped in her tracks, wondering if she was telling herself not to look for him recently. She felt a headache coming on. Mary tugged at Charlotte's sleeve, and she looked down to see Mary's pleading eyes, closing her own eyes to try hard to hold back from bursting out.
Yi Gu also felt it was a bit cruel to Charlotte and silently added a sentence.
"Brother has already thought of a solution, don't worry, Lydia will be fine."
Yi Gu Bu really didn't want her to see the letter, which told everything in detail. He was afraid that this girl would get hurt.
Although angry with him, Charlotte also knew that the young doctor had no malice and his brother was helping her mother clear her name. She was too anxious to know about her mother's situation, so she lost her composure. Thinking carefully about the content of the letter, she could probably guess that the public trial must have failed. Concealing the pain in her heart, Charlotte picked up Mary and returned to the bedroom.
Mary has fallen asleep, Charlotte can no longer hold back, thinking of Lydia taking the blame for herself and suffering, thinking of Ed's death behind the scenes, she suppressed her emotions and fell onto the bed. Can Charles really save his mother? Will Uncle put aside past grievances and support his mother with all his might? Charlotte doesn't know, in her heart, she keeps guessing and speculating, but can never get the answer she wants.
