Beyond the Extraordinary: The Zither in the Palace

A birthday gift for ya zi, happy 2nd birthday to ya zi.

Lin Jing didn't like his name when he was young. People who met him for the first time always thought this name should belong to a gentle girl, and in both primary school and high school, there were classmates or schoolmates with the same name and surname, all of whom were girls. However, his father told him that his name came from the Book of Songs, "Yi Yan Yin Jiu", which means "to grow old together in harmony". Only then did he realize that this name might be a symbol of perfect love expected by his parents' generation.

Lin Jing has always respected his father, Lin Jiezhou, although his father is strict with him. His mother is actually closer to him. Lin Jiezhou was born into a family of scientists and engineers and was among the first batch of students to graduate from a prestigious university after the restoration of college entrance exams following the end of the Cultural Revolution. Since Lin Jing can remember, his father has been in charge of a large state-owned enterprise. Rather than being a manager, Lin Jiezhou is more like a scholar. In Lin Jing's eyes, his father is wise, calm, rational, upright, and erudite, and has always been his role model throughout his growth. More importantly, Lin Jiezhou's emphasis on family and his meticulous love for his wife make Lin Jing feel that he has the happiest family in the world.

What is more important for a man than a peaceful and beautiful family, besides a successful career? Lin Jing has been influenced by his family since he was young, he thinks that being able to protect his family from wind and rain, giving happiness to the people he loves is the most basic responsibility of a man. However, not all families are as lucky as his, even the happy and carefree Little Long Wang, when returning home, has to face his parents who have been fighting continuously.

Every time a world war breaks out at home, Xiaofeiyu would appear on Lin Jing's dinner table. She always sat next to Lin Jing with an air of innocence, as if everyone couldn't see her, and quietly moved her small stool closer to Lin Jing. Lin Jing lowered his head to eat. He pretended not to notice that her eyes were shining brightly at him, and even laughed heartily when Xiaofeiyu was telling jokes. Lin Jiezhou, who always advocated for "no talking while eating" and "no speaking while sleeping", was now enthusiastically participating in the discussion. The usual serious and stern patriarch and leader image had disappeared. Lin Jing's mother also smiled at this lively little girl. The table was filled with Xiaofeiyu's favorite dishes.

Lin Jing was not jealous at all, in his eyes, this girl was his third family member.

Lin Jing is five years older than Xiao Fei Long, and he has always been her tutor. She is clever but not diligent in her studies. The mistakes she makes on her homework are due to carelessness, and when he explains the key points in the textbook to her, her attention often wanders far away.

She said, "I really like your lamp, it's orange. Lin Jing, can you give me one? I'll look at it every day when I get back."

Lin Jing replied that this kind of old-fashioned table lamp was no longer sold on the market, and the one at home was a memento of his parents' new marriage. He couldn't give it to her. She didn't get angry, but every time the light bulb burned out, Lin Jing would take a bus for over an hour to the edge of the city to buy a replacement at an old hardware market. This was the only place in the entire city that still sold bulbs of this color. He feared that one day this market would also disappear, so he usually bought many at once. He knew his own selfishness. He refused to give her such a table lamp because he hoped that when she missed the warm light, she would appear beside this very lamp. He hoped to be the only person in the world who could bring her such warmth.

Lin Jing practiced Liu's style because he loved the strict rules and powerful strokes of Liu's style. His calligraphy teacher always found it strange that a gentle child like Lin Jing could produce such bold and sharp characters. Xiao Fei Long hated writing with a brush, but her parents said that running to the Lin family often was okay, as long as she learned something good from Lin Jing, they hoped that learning calligraphy would help her wild personality become more reserved, so she followed him to practice calligraphy three days a week.

Lin Jing wasn't a strict teacher in front of Xiao Fei Long, most of the time she let her play with ink and have fun. As a result, even when he went to college and came back for summer vacation, her handwriting was still impressionist style and couldn't be shown off. However, there was one exception - the character "静" (quiet) which she wrote very well. Yes, he had taught her seriously and repeatedly, but had she also practiced diligently? Every time she had to show her handwriting to adults, she would resort to this one trick, and seeing the smooth and elegant "静" character, Lin Jing began to love her own name.

There are many children in the big yard, and he has been used to being a role model since childhood. Most parents educate their children with the usual phrase, "Look at Lin Jing, why can't you learn from him?" Lin Jing knows his own excellence and doesn't intend to hide it, he likes the admiring gaze of others, but tells his closest friend Xiaofeilong, "I don't admire you at all."

Lin Jing smiled and asked her, "Why?"

She said, "The person I want to marry is of course the best, isn't that a normal thing?"

In that case, he had already gotten used to hearing it. Perhaps from the moment she found out that people grow up and get married, she had always said seriously: "Lin Jing, I want to marry you, I must marry you!"

She said it in front of him, and also said it in front of many adults. A little girl, with a resolute tone, made a lifelong promise. Everyone was amused, and jokingly called her the young daughter-in-law of the Lin family. Lin Jing smiled too, but when he saw her playing wildly with those mischievous kids and her face turned red, he couldn't help but wonder if she really understood the meaning of "marrying him".

When she was six years old, her reason was, "Aunt Sun's cooking is really delicious, Mom said I couldn't marry Uncle Lin or Aunt Sun, so I can only marry you."

When I was nine years old, she said, "I look at Zhang Xiaoming and those stinky boys and want to beat them up. Lin Jing, it's still you who is good, I just want to marry you."

At fourteen, she tugged at his sleeve: "Wait for me, I'll be grown up soon."

He just smiled and said nothing.

She was seventeen that year, he came home for winter vacation and took her to the City God Temple fair, she had always liked to sneak into lively places. He went to buy water, turned his head back and couldn't see her anymore, finally saw her silhouette under the big banyan tree behind the temple when Lin Jing discovered that there was actually sweat on his forehead in the cold winter season.

He walked over and asked: "Weiwei, what are you doing?"

She was concentrating on tying the silk sachet with their names written on it to a branch with red thread, heard his voice and turned around hastily saying: "You are taller than me, you tie it."

"What's the use of being so tall?"

"A little higher and it won't be easy to knock off, when we get married, it's going to be a lifelong commitment."

She said it so matter-of-factly, Lin Jing wasn't the first time he heard her say something like that, don't know why, this time he didn't laugh, when he was tying the red ribbon on his toes, he couldn't tie a good knot several times.

Xiao Fei Long finally got accepted into a university in the same city as him. The day before she left by train, Lin Jing inserted the photo with "My Xiao Fei Long" written on it into the children's book she had given her. Over the years, many words were spoken by her, but there were some things that he needed to say himself, and he only said them once in a lifetime.

That night, he received a phone call. After hanging up the phone, he realized that his world had been turned upside down from that moment on.

"It is better to drink and make merry with you, and grow old together. With the zither and se under my arm, all will be quiet and good." What a moving vow, yet it was his most beloved person and another woman's longing for eternal love. The "whole world" of the happiest family he possessed turned out to be a joke, then what else is worth fighting for in this world?

He suddenly feared the small flying dragon that was about to come beside him.
