Chapter 1: University Freshman

September 10th, in the southern country, it was a scorching summer day with the sun blazing fiercely.

Zheng Wei's face turned red as she and the taxi driver together pulled her two large suitcases out of the trunk, half-dragging and half-pulling them. As she lifted her head to wipe the sweat with the back of her hand, the dazzling sunlight that shot through the gaps in the leaves made her vision black out for a moment. She rummaged through the pockets of her jeans and pulled out some spare change that her mother had given her before leaving home, handed it to the taxi driver beside her, and said with a smile, "Thanks, uncle."

The driver, who looked under 30 years old, was left red-faced by the little girl's bright smile and proper words, and when he hastily found the money, he didn't even dare to take the change.

Zheng Wei stood under the only tree that could provide shade, fanning herself with one hand while sizing up the place where she would be fighting and living for the next four years. The location was a long campus avenue, lined with subtropical trees whose names she couldn't recall. It was easy to imagine that taking an evening stroll along this road would be quite pleasant, but now the entire sidewalk was packed with people and tables of all sizes, making it impossible to pass through. Occasionally, private cars and taxis drove up to her location, unable to move forward, and more often, school buses arrived from the station, bringing over new students in batches, all of whom were young faces dragging large luggage, accompanied by parents who had come to register their children, with expressions that were even more anxious and solemn than those of the students.

Zheng Wei looked at them and smiled, thinking that if her mother had come along, she would probably be just as anxious as the emperor's eunuchs. Her father and mother had both said they would send her to school, but she had patted her chest in front of them and said, "No need, no need! I'm an eighteen-year-old clever girl, can't even handle registering for school? You're underestimating me too much, don't forget that when I was eight years old, I already knew how to take a three-hour bus ride to my grandmother's house by myself. Don't worry, don't worry!"

They were not very reassured, but after all, they were also busy with work. She repeatedly guaranteed and emphasized that three high school classmates had also taken the exam in this city, so they could travel together and take care of each other. After going through their parents' repeated reminders and heartfelt warnings about human trafficking, Zheng Wei bid farewell to her two classmates at the train station and stood alone on the land of G University.

Before I could even take in the surroundings, four or five boys came up to me, their faces filled with the kind of enthusiasm and forced maturity that only seniors have. One of them asked: "Hey classmate, are you a freshman? Which department are you from?"

"I'm in civil engineering." Zheng Wei replied honestly.

"Are you from the Civil Engineering department?" A boy with acne on his face lit up, "Then she's our junior sister too. We're in charge of receiving new students. Follow me, I'll take you to complete your registration procedures." After that, several people took over Zheng Wei's luggage without asking.

Zheng Wei's impression of boys was still stuck in high school, where they liked to give girls nicknames, often arguing with them over a question until their faces turned red, dragging their feet and refusing to erase the blackboard voluntarily, and looking down on girls as companions. As a result, she was extremely unaccustomed to the sudden politeness and gentlemanly demeanor of boys in college for a while.

"Oh, this suitcase's wheel broke near the train station." She said to the boy who had actively pulled the largest suitcase.

"It's okay, don't look at us being thin, we have muscles, it's just a suitcase, no big deal." The boy smiled and made a gesture to lift the suitcase with one hand. At first, the suitcase didn't budge on the cement floor, and he was clearly taken aback, his hands applying force in disbelief. This time, he finally managed to lift it up successfully. Zheng Wei and several other boys walking behind him noticed that his footsteps were slightly floating."

According to their suggestion, first of all, they took the dormitory key and settled down their luggage and beds, and then slowly handled those tedious formalities. Zheng Wei agreed with this arrangement. After walking a few steps, she saw a reception sign that read "College of Civil Engineering" and was about to walk over when several boys said, "No need, we are also from the College of Civil Engineering, all the same." The boys standing next to the reception sign smiled and winked at each other, saying, "Old Zhang, you guys are lucky, little sister is from that department too?"

That boy with acne on his face was obviously their "Old Zhang". He scratched his head and smiled, "Little junior sister of the Civil Engineering Department."

As soon as the words fell, someone shouted, "Old Zhang, you're too wolf-like. Earlier, four or five boys from the environmental engineering department came, and after getting off the bus, they stood stupidly by the side of the road without anyone paying attention to them. Our civil engineering sister hadn't even seen her own classmates yet, but you rushed up first..."

"It's all the same, we are all part of the College of Architecture and Engineering, everyone is one family, no distinction between each other."

Zheng Wei smiled secretly and continued to fan herself with her hand, pretending not to have heard the fierce debate that was like a pack of hungry dogs fighting over food. At this moment, maintaining suitable silence was the best choice for an intelligent girl.

The debate ended with Lao Zhang's "Contract Family" theory prevailing, successfully protecting the fruits of victory. On the way to the dormitory, several boys rushed to talk, asking about her name, department, major, and hometown, and even took the opportunity to introduce themselves in detail. The most impressive was Lao Zhang, who handed Zheng Wei a self-made business card that he had prepared early on, with his name, major, contact information, dormitory number, blood type, and hobbies all included. Zheng Wei was amazed by this concise and powerful introduction and put the card in her small bag, feeling admiration for this senior from the Environmental Engineering Department. To be honest, Zheng Wei, who was used to calling boys "brothers" and slapping their desks, felt a bit uncomfortable with such star treatment on her first day of university. However, as she walked from one end of the campus to the other, she saw that there were many people but very few girls, which made her believe the rumor that the male-to-female ratio at this famous southern technical university was 9:1. No wonder these boys looked like they were dying of thirst.

The number of girls in the science and engineering department is originally small, and most of them are relatively abstract. Although Zheng Wei is not a stunning beauty, compared to her beautiful mother, she has a certain gap, but her round face has a small pointed chin, big and lively eyes, and a nose that can be called elegant. Especially, her skin is white and flawless, which even her mother acknowledges is beyond her own youth. Therefore, based on Zheng Wei's numerous self-portraits, she absolutely deserves to be called a lovely girl who wins people's hearts, just like the heroine in a novel by a famous author. Although that author's works are already outdated for several centuries, his aesthetic views are still timeless. Just look at the female leads he chose for his novels, one more stunning than the other. Even Lin Jing, who rarely praises people, once said that Zheng Wei is quite enchanting when she doesn't speak, and can be called "quiet as a maiden". Of course, Zheng Wei consciously filtered out the second half of his evaluation, "lively as a mad rabbit", taking it as his affirmation of her.

So, Zheng Wei, walking behind Old Zhang, looked sympathetically at the boy who was panting and carrying a large suitcase, while secretly laughing to herself in her heart. She thought that even though she had only been admitted to a vocational university, there were still some benefits to be gained, and in this place where even a sow could become a Marilyn Monroe, good times were yet to come.

After receiving the key from Auntie in charge of dormitory management, Zheng Wei easily found the dormitory with the door number 402. She pushed open the door and entered a small single room for six people. Although it was a bit narrow, it had a balcony and a bathroom. She wasn't picky, so she looked around and saw that three out of the six beds already had luggage on them, which meant she was the fourth one to arrive. According to Auntie from dormitory management, due to insufficient dormitories, they couldn't arrange her accommodation according to her class, so she ended up in a mixed dormitory. She chose the lower bunk near the bathroom and this would be her territory from now on. When she turned around, she found that several boys who had helped her were still waiting for her, with the one who did the most work sweating profusely as if he had just taken a shower.

Mom said that when going out, one's mouth should be sweet, so she smiled and thanked several senior brothers, who were indeed pleased. Old Zhang even waved his hand: "What's this, a small gesture." His generous attitude almost made people forget that he was the person who had been empty-handed and only moved his lips along the way.

On the way to complete the admission formalities, the boy who was carrying a trunk finally caught his breath and asked weakly: "May I know what's in your trunk?"

  "My entire family fortune."

There were still so many people handling the admission procedures, but fortunately Old Zhang had a wide network of connections and was able to navigate through the crowds with ease, avoiding several long queues. Even so, after dozens of minutes, when Zheng Wei finally completed all the formalities and stood under the shade of a tree again, she couldn't help but exclaim, "This place is really hot!" She had originally thought that she could be considered a true southerner, but upon arriving in this subtropical city, she discovered that her hometown in the eastern province was actually quite cool and pleasant. No matter, she had finally arrived at her destination as she had wished, and thinking of this, she suppressed her excitement and shouted to herself in her heart, "I've finally come, Lin Jing!"
