Chapter Sixteen

  Chapter Sixteen

In the morning, Yu Yongze woke up from his dream, and when he opened his eyes, Dao Jing was nowhere to be seen. He listened carefully, but she hadn't gone to light the stove or tidy up the room. He quickly jumped out of bed and pushed open a door crack to look outside - there wasn't a single person in the courtyard. He slammed the door shut, and as he did, the windows rattled loudly from the force. He lazily flopped back onto the bed, closed his eyes, and muttered to himself: "It's all over... it's all over... making clothes for others to wear while thinking I'm doing a good deed..."

His thin face twitched, a kind of unprecedented pain that seemed to have failed everything deeply tormented him. He didn't want to get out of bed or move. Thinking about how he had carefully advised Lin Daojing last night, and this woman, this stubborn wild horse, had quietly left without saying a word, going to participate in some "March 18th" event. Daojing's actions had deeply hurt his self-esteem, making him both angry and heartbroken. He lay on the bed thinking: How can I live with such a woman? How can I love her? And besides...

Lu Jia Chuan's smiling face flashed before his eyes, and he became even more enraged. He jumped off the bed, forcefully threw off the quilt, didn't wash his face, and without eating breakfast, he heavily stepped towards the library behind the Red Building.

For months, the library had become his refuge. When he felt dissatisfied with his 'private' life, when he felt weak in front of Lin Daojing, and when he felt that he had lost his youthful vigor in certain 'waves' and thus stirred up some conflicting or shameful emotions, he would quickly hide himself in the library. The environment here was quiet, the air was gentle, there was no struggle, no noise and shouting, people silently read books, who were not disturbing each other. So, every time when his mood was extremely bad, he would come here to bury his head for a few hours, and with the thick thread-bound book, everything would be forgotten. And if he could find some useful materials in a certain book, or in certain chapters and sentences, that he could refer to, then he would be even more happy and proud to forget all his troubles.

The "March 18" memorial meeting was being held on the playground of the Red Building. The crowd was shouting loudly and fighting fiercely, but Yu Yongze sat quietly in a hardwood chair in the library, as if thinking about his own affairs without any connection to the world. At first, he couldn't concentrate on reading because of his indignation and anxiety. When he looked up at the few classmates scattered around the long tables in the library, looking at these familiar faces who often buried their heads in books, his heart gradually calmed down. Soon, he became engrossed in reading with a concentrated mind.

"Down with Japanese imperialism! Down with the Nationalist Party that seeks glory!" These stirring and tragic slogans occasionally echoed into the quiet air of the library, as if a mischievous child had thrown a small stone onto the calm surface of the water. But the ripples caused soon disappeared. The students who were buried in their books in the library only raised their heads, furrowed their brows, and looked out the window, their uneasy mood quickly subsiding.

"A toast to the wine, how much of life is left? Like the morning dew, gone by day, suffering many...". Yu Yongze was flipping through a book, when suddenly Cao Mengde's words flashed across his mind.

A faint sense of desolation and sorrow, like a mirage, seized his heart in an instant. He threw down the book, got up absent-mindedly, and walked to the window. The branches were covered with moist green leaves, under the warm sunlight, several buds of peach blossoms were waiting to bloom, and the air was intoxicatingly fresh and fragrant.

He gazed intently, his thoughts drifting back to Lin Daojing. Where was she on this beautiful spring day?... His reverie plunged him into a daze. It seemed that his Daojing wasn't amidst any crowd shouting and screaming; nor was she in some place fighting and struggling; she was on the beach, dressed like an immortal in white clothes, slender figure, snow-white face, with big deep eyes waiting for him... Thinking of this, he yearned for her so much, as if he hadn't seen her for many days, as if she would never come back again, he felt deeply pained.

Several crisp gunshots broke through his tangled thoughts, followed by furious shouts and chaotic voices that made his heart beat anxiously.

"What's going on?" He turned his head and asked a classmate who was standing beside him, also looking out in alarm. "Gunfire! Do you hear it? Shots are being fired right on our playground." He thought of Dao Jing, who must be on the playground too, and became even more flustered.

Several students who were reading quietly also couldn't sit still; even the librarian ran to the yard, and they all looked up at the sky in different directions.

There were several more shots ringing out in rapid succession.

"No! I have to go find her!" Yu Yongze didn't dare think about anything else and hastily rushed out.

The library of Peking University is adjacent to the big playground. He ran out of the library gate and stopped not far to the east. Standing on a small mound, he looked at the playground: police and students were fighting together. Shouts, curses, flashing bayonets, dancing wooden sticks, flying stones and people lying in blood... These terrible scenes stunned him! His feet were nailed to the ground and couldn't move. He tried his best to calm down his panicked heart and looked around at the chaotic crowd on the playground, hoping to see Lin Daojing among them. If she escaped, he would rush up to meet her. But after a while, he didn't see her. Where did she go? Was she knocked down? Or... He became more anxious and his feet couldn't move.

At this moment, he began to feel a little ashamed and guilty: so many people are not afraid of her, why am I afraid? He really wanted to rush up and rescue Lin Daojing from the crowd, just like he did on the beach in Beidaihe Yangzhuang. But a kind of "understanding" of worldly affairs made him clearly see that this is one thing at a time, the situation is different, how can it be chaotic? He had just chosen an unadventurous path for himself, when suddenly a bullet whizzed past his head, scaring him badly! His face turned pale, and his fingers trembled uncontrollably. After calming down, he subconsciously looked around - was the world still intact and existing around him? Was he injured and about to fall? He raised his weak hand to touch his head: no holes, the bullet hadn't grazed his skin, he was still alive and well. Just as he had put his mind at ease, another bullet flew by, and he couldn't care about Lin Daojing anymore, nor could he bother to check if he was injured again. He took off running, wanting to get away from the playground, but then thought: people can't outrun bullets, so he quickly ran back into the courtyard of the library, sprinting towards the large reading room.

At noon, he was extremely hungry. He listened to the empty playground and looked at the library with no one inside. He slowly stood up, packed his books and papers, and walked out of the library gate. Without even glancing towards the playground, he went straight back to his apartment.

At this time, Lin Daojing had not returned yet. He could only start a fire by himself and tidy up the cold and messy room. He was listlessly cleaning and sweeping while cooking noodles. As he wiped the dusty table, he muttered to himself: "Without a woman, it really doesn't feel like home. Dear, please come back soon!"
