Chapter 22: Entangled in a Blood Case
I'm not unfamiliar with blood, but the amount of blood on the ground is too much. In the blink of an eye, it's almost reached my feet. This is fresh blood! For several days, Wang Kun and I have been constantly injured, so we're extremely familiar with its smell.
No matter if someone came with a big aunt or got hemorrhoids, it's impossible to bleed so much. I suspect that the patient's wound ruptured and the situation is critical. I didn't care about avoiding suspicion, I just wanted to go in and save people.
"There's a ghost! There's a ghost in the toilet!" The women who came out of the toilet were still frightened, all shouting that there was a ghost.
A woman's words can be believed only half the time, and even that is not always true. Exaggerating and fabricating sensational gossip is a specialty of women.
I rushed into the women's restroom, but didn't see a single soul. The blood was flowing out of one of the stalls, the door slightly ajar, and compared to the bustling outside, the entire restroom seemed eerily quiet.
My heart suddenly accelerated, full of curiosity about the situation in the compartment. I didn't have any evil intentions, but smelling the taste of fresh blood always made me recall those terrifying experiences.
As I opened the door to the cubicle, what I saw made my hair stand on end and I took a few steps back, unable to stop vomiting. A female corpse wearing hospital clothes lay on the toilet with her eyes wide open, her belly cut open and her internal organs spilled all over the floor.
Her face was distorted, as if she had been frightened to death, her eyeballs were almost bulging out, and the white medical gown on her body had long been soaked with blood. Those internal organs seemed to have been crushed into a pulp, and their original shape could not be seen.
The woman was already dead, and after the doctor and nurse rushed in, they didn't even try to rescue her. They squatted down beside her and vomited for a while. The experienced doctor was also completely shocked by the victim's tragic appearance.
I was already feeling dizzy and now I'm even more exhausted, being supported by two young nurses as I leave the ladies' restroom.
"Have you seen the female ghost? The female ghost wore a red dress and killed the person inside!" A loud-mouthed woman shouted at me.
I took a glance at her, she was wearing the uniform of a cleaning worker, probably a toilet cleaner. The layout of the women's restroom is different from the men's, it's all cubicles inside, just now everyone else was in the cubicles using the toilet, only the cleaning auntie saw the female ghost.
However, the woman's gossiping ability is impressive. After the cleaning worker's loud shout, everyone swore they saw a ghost, but no one could describe what the "ghost" looked like.
I didn't have the heart or energy to care about the cleaning auntie, my mind kept thinking about Ren Binghua's previous words, I gradually began to doubt myself, was all this happening again because of me?
The doctor judged that the deceased was murdered. Such a heinous murder case must be reported to the police. A few minutes later, the police arrived.
This time, it was not Ma Zhiguo who led the team, but a young man named Chen Jianfei. He is the director of the police station, and Ma Zhiguo is only his deputy.
Chen Jianfei looked like he was only in his thirties, with a very capable appearance. He led his subordinates to investigate the scene and exchanged views with the forensic doctor, speaking professional terms that I didn't quite understand.
I heard Ma Zhiguo mention him, he is very young but quite capable. Two years ago, Ma Zhiguo was about to be promoted and become the head of the department when Chen Jianfei suddenly parachuted in.
At that time, Ma Zhi Guo was naturally not convinced. In terms of seniority and ability, he could have fully taken on the role of Zheng Suozhang. However, a month later, Ma Zhi Guo had to admit in front of everyone that he was inferior to Chen Jianfei, and afterwards, he tried his best to avoid Chen Jianfei when he was on duty, not wanting to be overshadowed by him.
It is said that Chen Jianfei and Xiao Huan have a good relationship, and it was also him who came forward to ask Xiao Huan for help in solving the vengeful spirit's problem. The labor cost of 10,000 yuan per day was also given by Xiao Huan as a friendly price because of his face to Chen Jianfei.
After the investigation, I saw the old man with a lame leg from the police station's morgue again. His mental state was completely different from when I saw him at night, staring at the corpse with sparkling eyes.
"Take the deceased's body back and examine it carefully." Chen Jianfei reminded.
The old man with a lame leg didn't even glance at Chen Jianfei, excitedly nodded, and without needing anyone's help, carefully lifted the body onto the stretcher, covered it up, and had the police officers carry it back to the police station.
After doing all this, Chen Jianfei finally noticed my existence, walked in front of me and frowned: "How is it you again?"
This sentence makes me very unhappy, what does he mean? Does he also think I'm a jinx, that nothing good will happen whenever I show up?
"I was just passing by and heard the miserable cries inside, so I rushed over to take a look. This has nothing to do with me, can't the police randomly frame an innocent person?" I retorted bluntly.
Chen Jianfei took a deep breath, shook his head: "As long as you're involved, things won't be that simple. It seems that this time, I'll have to spend a lot of money to get Xiao Huan that bastard over here."
I curled my lip: "You're a people's police officer, do you really believe the deceased was killed by a female ghost? Even if there are ghosts in this world, they wouldn't come out to harm people in broad daylight, would they? Director Chen, I think you seem to be biased against me."
It's said that if you're near vermilion, you'll turn red; if you're near ink, you'll turn black. This saying is absolutely right. Chen Jianfei and Xiao Huan have a good relationship, so he must be influenced by him. He might even believe what Xiao Huan says, thinking that I'm destined to be haunted by hundreds of ghosts, and everything is my fault.
Chen Jianfei furrowed his brow and didn't continue the conversation, instead asking me a few casual questions before telling me to wait quietly at the hospital, saying he would call me back to the station to ask about the case at any time.
I'm starting to regret it, I should have never gone to the women's restroom to join in on the excitement. In the end, I didn't even save anyone and just got myself into big trouble.
The spread of rumors is always astonishing, and by the time I returned to Pangzi's ward, other patients in the ward were already enthusiastically gossiping about the bloody incident that had just occurred.
They all swore that they had seen a female ghost wearing a red cheongsam, and some even said that people who were killed while wearing red clothes would become vengeful spirits with great resentment, harming people everywhere.
As one of the witnesses to the blood case, I think these are all nonsense. Except for the cleaning auntie, no one has really seen a female ghost wearing a red dress.
Even a cleaning auntie might just be seeing things, how could there possibly be a female ghost appearing in broad daylight?
Wang Kun didn't know when he woke up, his face looked very strange, and he said in a low voice: "Wu Tian, last night Xiao Lan was also wearing a red dress!"
I was stunned, it seems he had already heard the gossip from everyone. After hearing Wang Kun say that, I was even more convinced that the person I saw this morning was Xiaolan, but isn't this too coincidental?
"Fatty, don't you think that the female ghost who harms people is Xiaolan? Do you also believe what Ren Binghua said?" I asked with a furrowed brow.
Wang Kun said: "I... I didn't mean it that way, I just think this matter is too suspicious."
From his attitude, I can see that he has actually believed Ren Binghua's words. I suddenly feel very helpless, Wang Kun is my good friend, but now he has been completely deceived by Ren Binghua, who else can I stand on the same front line with?
But this is also human nature, I have no way to blame Wang Kun. If it were an outsider who heard Ren Binghua's words, they might have already spread them far and wide, and started to be on guard against me.
"Wu Tian, don't get me wrong, I believe in you. But when it comes to ghosts and gods, it's better to believe they exist than not. Let's be careful, or else I'll call Ren Binghua right now and have her come help us." The fatty advised.
I smiled and shook my head: "Alright, fatty, I know what you mean. Anyway, we're both brothers, I won't harm you, so just call your family to come pick you up and take you back home."
Now that I think about it, Wang Kun hasn't kept his distance from me despite all this, which is already quite a testament to our friendship. I won't put him in harm's way; leaving me means leaving danger and trouble behind.
The vengeful spirit's case was just about to be settled, but now a female ghost wearing a red dress has appeared, and I'm afraid that if this case isn't solved, I won't be able to escape.
But I still don't accept it, being haunted by a hundred ghosts? Once this case is solved, I will also leave this city. I wonder if there's any connection between the car and Ren Binghua, or if I'll be haunted by evil spirits again.
Wang Kun's face changed instantly, and he panted heavily: "You... Wu Tian, what do you mean? We're brothers, am I the kind of person who would abandon my own brother in times of danger?"
I let out a wry smile: "Fatty, it's precisely because we're brothers that I don't want to drag you down. The nonsense Ren Binghua and Xiao Hua said, I don't believe, but in reality, following me will indeed bring a lot of trouble and danger. You should head back home first, and we can meet up again when there's an opportunity."
If something happens to Wang Kun because of me, I will feel guilty for the rest of my life. Maybe Ren Binghua was right, I am an unlucky person, even if there are no evil spirits, people close to me will not have a good ending.
Actually, my heart is no longer that firm, and I keep doubting myself. My grandfather's brain isn't normal, he never looks at me straight in the eye. My dad disappeared mysteriously too, he was a filial son but didn't even come back for his mother's funeral.
If everything is as Ren Binghua said, and I am the one who caused the tragedy of everyone around me, then wouldn't it be better if I disappeared, so that everyone can live a good life?
Wang Kun wanted to explain, but I stopped him. I had already made up my mind and must let him leave. Now I was just being stubborn, saying that I didn't believe Ren Binghua's words. I was very afraid, afraid that I would implicate Wang Kun and get him killed.
"Alas, Wu Tian, I don't have the energy to argue with you. Anyway, my injury hasn't fully healed yet, if you really want me to leave, can it wait until I'm discharged from the hospital?" Wang Kun sighed, feeling a bit ashamed and regretful.
I hesitated for a moment, nodded, and was about to pat him on the shoulder to let him rest well, but found that his face was very abnormal, with a crooked mouth and eyes, and foul-smelling saliva flowing from the corner of his mouth.
