Chapter 68: Even Kings Fear
The zombies' intelligence has indeed evolved, logically speaking, the resurrected zombies are just mindless corpses, what's going on? Moreover, Li Guangyi had also mentioned earlier that he added a group of genes to his research results, so what was the additional group of genes later on? It seems that the Americans' secrecy measures are quite sophisticated, a virus can be researched by two people separately and then combined together, without either knowing what the other's research results were. Perhaps there are still unknown secrets inside, this is truly a case of "using one thing to prevent another". Yang Hao was just admiring the old American's political tactics when the elevator's power was restored, probably due to the backup power device kicking in. Along with the rumbling sound starting again, the elevator continued to ascend. Everyone's heart slightly relaxed a bit.
"I only know that apart from me, there are 2 other scientific teams doing research at the same time, but I'm not sure who they are yet..."
"That genome, I secretly studied it before, it's very strange... This set of genes doesn't seem to be a human gene arrangement, but nor does it seem like a beast's gene." Yang Hao was confused after hearing this, not human? Not beast either, what is it then??
"What do you mean by this?"
"This gene is not found in humans, nor in beasts, nor even in any species that we know of... The sequence is quite strange, but one thing is certain: originally mindless zombies, after being implanted with this gene, showed an increase in intelligence and became bloodthirsty and aggressive, most importantly, they are different from beasts, seemingly uninterested in animals, only having a strong attacking instinct towards living humans." Li Guangyi pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose, explaining seriously.
"With the restored IQ, bloodthirsty, targeting living humans for attack..." Yang Hao muttered to himself, and suddenly an idea popped up in his mind, but this idea was too terrifying, although it seemed unthinkable, yet it was the only, most fitting explanation.
"Clang..." The elevator went up for a few minutes before losing power again and stopping in mid-air. This time, everyone's heart was in their throat, as if the force of their gasping breaths could have blown their hearts out.
Yang Hao stared at the elevator's flashing indicator lights, which were currently stopped on the 29th floor. There were still three floors to go before reaching the top. Although it was only a short distance of three floors, the danger outside was unpredictable. The intelligence of this group of zombies was rising at an alarming rate, they had immense strength, feared no knives, guns, or clubs, and were bloodthirsty, moving extremely fast. Anyone who was bitten, scratched, or even slightly touched by them would likely die or become one of them. However, the elevator could no longer be used, and staying there would mean certain death. Yang Hao pried open the elevator doors with his hands and said...
"We're not far from our destination now. In this situation, we only have one chance to survive, and that's to make a run for it. I don't guarantee that everyone will make it out alive, but there's no other way. Are you with me? Just as he finished speaking, the sound of shuffling footsteps and low growls could be heard from outside the elevator..."
"Rush... whether or not to rush is death, rushing doesn't necessarily mean death..." Li Guangyi seemed to be forced by the zombies to a desperate point, unexpectedly blurting out this sentence, after a brief explanation from Little Wei and 4 soldiers around him, everyone agreed on the plan to rush out of the elevator to the top floor.
"Action as planned earlier... Lamp Shixiong, thank you..." Yang Hao said and stepped back to make way at the door entrance. Yu Deng nodded and with both hands, drew out Huan Tian, striking it diagonally against the large gate. The thick gate was cut open by half under the sharp blade of Huan Tian that could cleave iron like mud.
The moment the big gate fell, Yang Hao's mind flashed back to a voice command from his favorite university game CS, and without thinking, he shouted it out loud. As it turned out, sometimes things from games really work in real life. The moment the commanding sentence left his mouth, everyone immediately formed an unspoken agreement. Yang Hao and Hu Tou led the way at the front, Xiao Wei and Yu Deng protected Li Guangyi in the middle, behind them were two soldiers carrying a zombie like a rice dumpling, and finally there were the two American soldiers with guns.
Yang Hao and Hu Tou had just run out of the door for a few steps when they felt a strong gust of wind blowing in front of them, and more than 10 zombies rushed over, roaring and running wildly. The two men looked at each other and then clashed with the zombies. As soon as they met, it was like two assassins who were proficient in dark arts had run into a crowd of people who had no power to fight back. There were sounds of brains splattering, limbs shattering, angry roars, and violent shouts everywhere. Li Guangyi saw that the two men in front of him were opening up a path, their movements incredibly fast and deadly, each blow striking with precision. The ferocious zombies under their attack were like weak-minded children fighting against wild warriors, completely powerless to fight back. His heart felt much more at ease, and if things continued this way, there shouldn't be any unexpected events.
A line of people slowly advanced under Yang Hao and Hu Tou's fierce battle... 30th floor, 31st floor....
"The people behind are catching up, and with one more floor we'll reach the rooftop..." Yang Hao said as he spoke, his dagger pierced through the heads of two more zombies. Along this road of killing, he didn't even know how many he had killed, all he knew was that he couldn't relax, couldn't stop, or else everyone would die...
As they spoke, the group of people had already fought their way to the middle of the 31st floor. Walking forward another 20 meters would bring them to the staircase leading to the rooftop. However, a tricky situation lay before them - the entrance to the stairs was packed with zombies. The sound of gunfire from behind informed Yang Hao that his rear was also being pursued by zombies. But these zombies didn't attack; instead, they stood in place, their sharp teeth bared and drool flowing continuously from the corners of their mouths. It seemed as though this group of people had an irresistible allure to the zombies, but why weren't they moving? Why weren't they attacking? Instead, they were blocking both staircases leading up and down, completely sealing them off. What did they want to do?
"Blood...blood...blood..." It was unclear which zombie's mouth had mumbled out the word, but after that, all the zombies stood in place and shouted loudly, although somewhat indistinctly, but still audible as a cry for blood.
Everyone was stunned by the scene in front of them, and Yang Hao didn't know what to do either, facing the increasingly loud and shocking shouting.
"Ah Hao, listen..." Hu Tou slowly leaned in, reminding him in a low voice, and Yang Hao perked up his ears with rapt attention.
"Tap tap tap tap tap..." A string of strange footsteps echoed into Yang Hao's ears, and just these footsteps made him shudder. At human speed, it was impossible to produce such a fast pace. What kind of thing was this??? Yang Hao felt that its movement speed was astonishing. The previous footsteps were still vague, but in the second it took for a question to flash through his mind, the footsteps became very clear. It seemed that the distance from himself wasn't far...
"Little Wei, ask them if they still have hand grenades?"
"Yang, and 2 high-explosive grenades..."
"Get me one over here...." As Yang Hao's words fell, a high-explosive grenade was handed over to him. Yang Hao took the grenade and rushed forward in an urgent charge into the zombie crowd. His left hand held a knife horizontally across his chest, and with a swift rotation, he crouched down, striking the zombies. The zombies that were hit immediately had large blood holes appear on their chests. At this time, Yang Hao stretched out his right hand, pulled the ring off the grenade, and stuffed it into the blood hole. With a kick of his left foot, the zombie flew backward, knocking over the zombies behind it. After a series of swift movements, Yang Hao used his hands to push off the ground and flipped back to Tiger's side with a backward somersault-like motion.
"BOOM....." A loud explosion sounded, and a group of zombies in front of me were instantly blown to pieces.
"Hurry... take advantage of the situation and hurry up~~~~" Yang Hao continuously waved his hands, signaling Li Guangyi and others to go upstairs. Because he felt that the guy who was quickly approaching them seemed more terrifying and threatening than 100 zombies combined. Li Guangyi and a group of people behind him didn't dare to stay, immediately set off running towards the stairs leading to the rooftop, switching from the front team to the back team. Yang Hao and Hu Tou stood at the back of the crowd, covering their actions. Before long, everyone had climbed onto the rooftop, where Kerry's helicopter was already waiting...
"Ahao, you go up first... I'll blow up the stairs and then arrive..." Hu Tou said, taking out the last high-explosive grenade from his hand and blocking Yang Hao's path.
"Tiger Head... then you be careful yourself, hurry up and catch up..." Tiger Head nodded, after that all his attention was focused on the 30-31 floor stair corner.
Yang Hao turned around and climbed onto the rooftop, the whirring sound of the helicopter's rotor blades gave him a sense of hope. Amidst Kaylee's shouting, Yang Hao boarded the helicopter.
"Departure..."
"Wait... there's still someone who hasn't come up yet..."
"Who's Ah??? Is Tiger Head???" Kerry nodded at the personnel, but didn't see Tiger Head's figure, so he signaled the driver to stop... Everyone's eyes were focused on the exit leading to the rooftop, anxiously waiting...
"BOOM....." Another loud explosion sounded, and finally a figure appeared on the rooftop.
Yang Hao's heart was about to put down, but he found that Hu Tou's face turned pale, knowing Hu Tou for so long, had never seen him like this before, what on earth did the fearless and daring Hu Tou encounter?
