Chapter Thirty-Five: The Underground Base
"Be careful, retreat while scanning 'shooting', don't be 'reckless'!" Oni no Yaiba shouted loudly.
In fact, we didn't need him to tell us that we had to retreat at this moment. The savages were only a hundred meters away from us, and in between was a flat concrete road. If they charged over desperately, it would take them at most ten seconds.
Imagining a vast number of savages surging forward like a tidal wave, shouting and brandishing clubs with gnashing teeth and gaping mouths, the scene is extremely magnificent.
Beep beep beep...
At first, the submachine gun spat out a deadly snake of fire, and in one sweep, more than 20 savages fell to the ground.
"It's more exciting than fighting on the streets of Shanghai!" Xu Lai's eyes turned red, and the muscles on his face twitched with excitement.
Suddenly, the savage holding a Japanese military sword swung it left and right, and the group of savages instantly split into two "waves". One "wave" charged forward fiercely, while the other "wave" stopped and suddenly threw a hail of small stones at us.
"Run, hide quickly!" We were so scared that our faces turned white, and we hastily turned around, covering our heads and sprinting towards the lighthouse. A stone hit my leg bone, hurting me so much that I cried out for grandma.
That pause, and then a 'wave' of wild people was less than thirty meters away from us.
"Even savages have wisdom!" Xu Lai held the submachine gun and fired crazily, but the savage was already too close, and the advantage of firepower would soon be lost. In those years, the Eighth Route Army fought against the Japanese army with absolute superiority in artillery, relying on desperate charges, using "flesh" to fight for victory. How could we three brothers compete with dozens of savages in a "flesh" battle? I didn't dare think about it anymore.
We fired while rapidly retreating.
A large number of savages fell into a pool of blood, but they showed no fear at all.
"Damn it, I can only use this!" Oni no Yaiba bit off the fuse and quickly threw out a hand grenade. In the flash of an instant, he flew out and covered his head, shouting: "Get down!"
Xu Lai and I immediately rushed to the ground in the direction of the lighthouse at the moment when we saw the hand grenade flying out.
Boom! With a loud explosion, the savage let out a mournful cry. I turned back to see that only three had been blown up. The group of savages was clearly stunned by the sudden explosion and paused, we took advantage of the gap to fire another round, killing more than ten savages.
Not long after, more than 100 wild men were left with only a dozen or so. We ruthlessly shot and killed them all, but one lucky one managed to break through to the front of Guǐyèjiǎo, only to be kicked flying by the latter's high leg, his head shattered.
"Huff... what a close call." I gasped for air, and before I could even feel relieved, a rustling sound came from the edge of the dense forest.
Just a few seconds later, another group of wild men rushed over, one after another, and in the blink of an eye, more than 300 were entangled. In the nearby dense forest, the trees swayed more and more violently, and it seemed that even more wild men were rushing over quickly.
I stared wide-eyed, this is basically a savage island, can't even let people rest. What's even more maddening is that the submachine gun only fired a few shots and ran out of ammo at the critical moment, where's the time to change magazines now? Xu Lai's was even worse, it jammed directly.
Oni no Yaiba threw out three hand grenades in a row, giving us only a very limited amount of time. As the wild people's group got closer and closer, we were getting a bit flustered.
"Let's take shelter in the lighthouse," said Oni no Yaiba, and we three quickly ran to the small "door" of the lighthouse just five meters away from us.
The gun butt hit it once, and the 'door' actually opened, it wasn't locked.
All I saw was a dark and murky interior where nothing could be seen, and a whiff of damp earthy air entered my nostrils.
I was poking my head in to take a look, "Don't block the way!" Xu Lai was very anxious, and with one push, he shoved me inside. I stumbled, and just as my body moved into the lighthouse, I suddenly felt the ground beneath me give way, and my mind went completely blank. The next thing I knew, I was plummeting straight down. "No good!" It was almost an instinctive reaction to survive, at the same time that I fell, I subconsciously grabbed onto Xu Lai's clothes, which were within arm's reach. Originally, I had wanted to grab onto the last straw to save my life, but I didn't think that Xu Lai's slender and tall build could withstand the turmoil of a Northeastern big fellow like me. Almost without any pause, the two of us tumbled down together.
Ah...... Thud.
We crashed heavily onto a metal plate, I only felt an unbearable pain in my chest, a foul smell in my throat that was hard to bear, and spat out a small mouthful of blood.
"Aiyo, aiyo...... my leg is broken, aiyo...... it hurts so much......" Xu Lai was pounding his chest and shouting loudly beside me, but I couldn't see his expression.
"Hey, are you okay?" Oni no Yaiba shouted from above.
"Don't worry, I won't die for now!" I replied.
Suddenly, a beam of light fell from above, and I hastily reached out to catch it. It was the flashlight in Oni no Yaiba's hand. "Quickly check if there is any place to hide below! There are too many of those things, I can't hold on much longer!" Oni no Yaiba's tone was extremely urgent. Following that, the sound of machine gun fire and scattered explosions from hand grenades as well as the angry roars of the wild men clearly reached my ears, and I knew that the hand grenades Oni no Yaiba had brought with him would soon be used up.
In a crisis, I hastily shone my flashlight to illuminate where I was. In an instant, I found myself in a four-meter-square skylight, with iron plates underfoot and several thick ropes cut open scattered all over the ground, surrounded by solid concrete walls on all sides.
I concentrated my mind and searched around, suddenly a bright light appeared in front of me, and I found that under Xu Lai's buttocks there was a partition similar to an air vent.
"Get your butt out of the way!" I kicked open Xu Lai, who was holding his leg and wailing in pain. My fingers were stuck in the partition, and with a burst of strength, I pried it open. The flashlight shone down, and I immediately excitedly shouted at the top of my lungs: "There's a road below!"
"Get out of the way, I'm coming down!" Oni no Ya shouted, and jumped down. He used his toes to stick to the concrete wall and slid down quickly, dissipating some of the force, then with a loud "thud", he landed right next to us with tremendous force, causing the iron plate beneath our buttocks to shake violently.
At the same time, a shrill cry continued to sound from above. I turned on my flashlight and shone it upwards, and what I saw was astonishing - more than ten wild men were sticking out their ugly heads, baring their teeth and making faces at us, their eyes glowing with a bloodthirsty green light. Without hesitation, I fired a burst of gunfire to greet them, but unexpectedly these wild men were quite agile, shrinking their necks and avoiding the bullets. Then they stuck their heads out again, taunting us and making faces. "They're just like the monkeys on Mount Tai, how detestable!" I was furious.
After several attempts, I also saw the 'door' way. These wild men seemed to have no intention of coming down, but only wanted to surround us below and not let us out.
Roughly estimated, the skylight is about 7 or 8 meters away from the ground. Even if there are no wild men above, it would be very difficult for us to climb out.
Without staying for too long, the three of us jumped down to the next level along the partition board. Xu Lai was pushed down hard by us, and naturally he couldn't help but curse his mother.
The flashlight shone carefully upwards.
"Huh, there's an electric switch." I was both surprised and delighted, with a try-it-out attitude, I pushed the switch up.
Puff...... The surroundings suddenly lit up with dazzling white light!
I was overjoyed, and all I saw in front of me was a long corridor with white fluorescent lights on the ceiling being lit up one by one, the light quickly moving forward, and it was impossible to see the end.
"This is strange, where am I? Did the Japanese really build an underground base here?" I muttered to myself. Now even a fool would know that the lighthouse outside was just a disguise."
I found that we were in a space like an iron cage, with the back closed and a row of movable iron bars in front, and several buttons marked with up and down arrows on the side.
Seeing these familiar facilities, a word suddenly flashed in my mind - "escalator".
"We fell into the elevator!" Myself and Oniichan almost shouted out at the same time. Thinking of this, I pressed the up button, but the elevator didn't react at all.
"The rope above has been cut off and this elevator is out of order." Koinosuke sighed.
"Damn it, the little Japanese didn't even do a good job before leaving." I let out a cold snort, but my back suddenly felt chilly. Had they really 'left' everything behind? I suddenly realized that the footsteps I had heard earlier beneath the concrete floor meant that there was a high possibility that others were still hiding in this underground location!
"Ah, my leg! It's ruined!" Xu Lai was covered in snot and tears. I took a look and damn, the white bone fragments were sticking out, fresh blood had dyed his pants red. This kind of injury needs to be treated immediately.
Oni no Yaiba took off his top, revealing a slender yet explosive muscular physique. He said to Xu Lai Dao, "Fortunately, I've studied battlefield medicine. Bear with it for a moment, it'll just hurt a little." As he spoke, he tore his clothes into strips and used Xu Lai's rifle as a splint to bind the broken leg tightly together. With one swift pull, Oni no Yaiba pressed the exposed bone fragments back in place.
"Ah!" Xu Lai let out a hoarse and mournful cry, and after a few seconds, he collapsed to the ground, lying motionless on his stomach.
"It's nothing, he just fainted from pain." Gu Ye Jia smiled and opened his pants in front of Xu Lai's broken leg.
"What are you doing?"
Oni no Ya said with a calm face: "Urine can be used for disinfection and pain relief, are you holding back or not? Why don't you also go take a piss?"
I hastily waved my hand.
Xu Laiyi, who was lying on the ground, immediately became spirited as soon as he heard that someone wanted to urinate on him. His face changed greatly and he shouted: "Chi Na, if you dare to urinate, I'll squeeze your eggs to burst!"
"Hmph, you don't know what's good for you, don't come crying to me if your wound gets infected." Gu Ye was extremely dissatisfied and kept lecturing about wilderness first aid and the necessity of special handling in extreme situations. Xu Lai didn't listen at all, let out a sigh of relief, patted his chest: "Hoo-hoo, dying is minor, getting wet is major."
Give Xu Lai a ten-minute rest, and I'll support him as we slowly move forward into the corridor. Oniichan is leading the way with his submachine gun at the ready.
The corridor is very long, with no rooms on either side. The amount of work required to build such a long corridor underground is enormous. Little Japan's nature is particularly frugal and will save wherever possible. Since he went to so much trouble to build this underground base, his purpose must not be simple.
Five minutes later, a 'gate' appeared in front of us. On the gate, there was a wooden sign with four big characters written in blood-colored ink: "No Entry".
