Chapter Nineteenth: The Development of Humanity
But after the Fire God said goodbye to Tongtian, he returned to his tribe and carefully observed the life of the human race. He found that humans were covered in hair and drank blood, and at night they were often disturbed by fierce beasts. The Fire God saw this and began to think deeply about how to solve this problem. One day, a heavy rain fell from the sky, with thunder and lightning. A bolt of lightning struck a large tree, and it suddenly burst into flames, burning fiercely. The wild animals around were frightened and ran away in all directions.
"The beast is afraid of fire, so lighting a bonfire at night will not worry about the invasion of fierce beasts." Thinking of this, Suirenshi was overjoyed and immediately picked up a wooden stick, ignited it in front of him, and then rushed back to his tribe. Unfortunately, the wooden stick was burned out halfway, and the fire went out. Suirenshi saw this, but did not give up, and found a slightly larger wooden stick to try several times, but all failed. Standing beside the burning big tree, Suirenshi began to think slowly.
At this time, he suddenly smelled a fragrance and followed the scent to find a wild beast that had been burned to death. The Suiren tore off a piece of meat from the beast's body, chewed it in his mouth, and found that the meat was extremely delicious, hundreds or thousands of times better than what he had eaten before. He immediately thought to himself: "I didn't expect fire to have such an effect, but how can I get some fire?" The Suiren fell into deep contemplation. After thinking for many days, the Suiren still had no clue, so he thought of Tongtian, who had said that if there was anything he didn't understand, he could come and ask him. Thinking of this, the Suiren immediately rushed to where Tongtian was.
After a moment, Suiren arrived at Tongtian's location and immediately went to see him. Tongtian was sitting cross-legged on a large stone, cultivating his energy. When Suiren saw Tongtian, he didn't care about anything else and immediately kowtowed to the ground, calling out: "Disciple Suiren, paying respects to Master." Tongtian opened his eyes and saw that Suiren had arrived, his heart moved, knowing that Suiren might have realized something, so he came to ask for his guidance.
Then, he suppressed the impulse in his heart and asked slowly: "Sui Ren Shi, why don't you stay in your tribe and learn how to help people overcome difficulties? What are you doing here? Hurry back." Sui Ren Shi heard Tong Tian's words and hurriedly kowtowed again, saying: "Master, I have gained something in my tribe this time. I discovered the wonderful use of fire. Fire can not only drive away fierce beasts and insects, prevent night attacks by wild animals, but also burn wild animals into more delicious food, its uses are endless. However, fire is difficult to preserve, I don't know if Master has any method, please instruct me."
Tongtian listened to what Suirenshi said, and was overjoyed in his heart. This disciple had indeed not let him down. Suppressing the joy in his heart, he asked Suirenshi: "When heaven and earth first opened up, they were divided into yin and yang. Yin and yang were further divided into the five elements of metal, wood, water, fire, and earth, which generate and overcome each other. Do you understand?" Suirenshi listened, bowed his head in thought for a moment, and muttered: "Generate and overcome each other."
Suddenly, he thought that a large fire needs wood to sustain it, and immediately looked up and asked: "Teacher, is it said that in the Five Elements, wood can generate fire?" Tongtian saw him understand, was delighted in his heart, but also couldn't speak clearly, only saying: "This requires you to understand yourself, to know that humans must rely on their own strength to overcome difficulties one after another, this way they can survive on this vast and barren continent. I can only give you a hint, too much won't be said." Suiren heard this, knew it required his own understanding, so bid farewell to Tongtian and returned to his tribe.
Suirenshi thought all the way, thinking of Tongtian's words about interdependence and mutual restraint. Since wood can give birth to fire, how can wood be made to produce fire? Then he had an idea, lightning strikes trees and sets off a big fire, so if you hit the tree, will it produce sparks? Suirenshi began to experiment, but failed, the tree was already broken by him, but no spark was seen. Suirenshi couldn't help feeling discouraged, so he sat on the tree to rest for a while. Suddenly, he found that the tree he was sitting on was hot, and immediately began to check. After observing for a while, Suirenshi came to the conclusion that after hitting the tree, the temperature of the damaged part of the tree began to rise. After thinking about it for a moment, Suirenshi quickly took a piece of broken wood, and then took another small piece of broken wood to rub against each other. Before long, the wood started to smoke, and then a small flame rose up.
Sui Ren Shi was overjoyed, holding up the burning stick of wood towards the sky and shouting loudly: "Today I, Sui Ren Shi, have successfully drilled into wood to obtain fire, allowing humanity to obtain its first flame. Humanity will bid farewell to its life of drinking blood and wearing fur, and enter an era with fire. Heaven and earth bear witness to this!" As soon as he finished speaking, the sky was filled with thunderous roars, shaking the nine heavens. After the thunder passed, countless merits descended from the sky towards Sui Ren Shi. One of them landed on the torch held by Sui Ren Shi, while the rest were absorbed by him. Sui Ren Shi immediately felt the changes in the Heavenly Way unfolding before his eyes, and his cultivation continued to rise until he reached the peak of Da Luo Jin Xian.
Originally, the Human Sovereign had no cultivation. The human race could only begin their true path of cultivation after Laozi passed down the Golden Elixir Great Dao. Although he didn't cultivate, he often listened to the Great Dao at Tongtian's place and his understanding of it was not inferior. Now, with the help of merit, he reached the peak of Daluo Jinxian in one go, which is no worse than some great gods who have heard the Dao in Zixiao Palace.
Not far from the Liren clan's village, in a great mountain, Tongtian sat cross-legged and cultivating, gazing at the anomaly displayed by the Heavenly Way, smiled slightly, then continued to cultivate.
Sui people drilled wood to make fire, and the human race used fire not only to drive away fierce beasts and mosquitoes, but also to roast food for eating. As a result, the human race began to vigorously promote the use of fire, and each tribe benefited greatly from it.
After saying goodbye to Tongtian, the Youchao clan also returned to their tribe. After careful observation, the Youchao clan discovered that after humans had spread the use of fire, although they were no longer afraid of beast invasions, on rainy days, fires would be extinguished and it was difficult to preserve them. Moreover, when humans camped in the wilderness, many people would still be attacked by beasts if they were not careful. Seeing this, the Youchao clan began to think of a solution.
One day, You Chui saw that birds living in trees were not attacked by wild beasts. Inspired by this, You Chui had his tribe live in trees. This indeed greatly reduced the threat of wild beasts to humans, but it was very difficult for many people to live in trees. If you weren't careful, you would fall from the tree, and there were many other inconveniences to living in trees. You Chui saw that this method wouldn't work and could only think of another way. But no matter how hard he thought, he couldn't come up with anything, so he went to ask for help from Tongtian.
After meeting Tongtian, You Nao's troubles were spoken out and asked for guidance. Tongtian looked at him and said: "You already know that birds live in nests, just imitate them." You Nao said: "Imitating bird nests and building on trees, the disciples have tried it before, but humans living on trees are very inconvenient, so they had to give up. The disciples also built them on the ground, but when the heavy rain came, they still couldn't avoid it. Please tell me the solution." Tongtian smiled: "Why don't birds in their nests have such troubles?" You Nao listened and said strangely: "Birds live in trees, and when the heavy rain comes, the trees will block it for them..." As he spoke, You Nao slowly became stunned, Tongtian saw this and smiled slightly, knowing that You Nao had gained some insight.
After a moment, You Chui came back to his senses and immediately said to Tong Tian Dao: "Master, I understand now. I'll take my leave." He then left without even saying goodbye, returning directly to the tribe. Later, he called upon some people and began building houses. Before long, a simple house appeared before everyone's eyes, with a roof that was also covered. This way, when it rained heavily, they wouldn't have to be afraid. You Chui was overjoyed and exclaimed loudly: "Today, I, You Chui, built the first house for humanity, sheltering them from wind and rain. Humanity can now bid farewell to sleeping in the open wilderness." From then on, humanity had their own place of residence, and heaven bore witness to this. After You Chui finished speaking, Tian Dao was moved once again and bestowed boundless merit upon him. Some of it landed on his newly built house, while the rest was absorbed by You Chui. As he absorbed the merit, his cultivation began to rise continuously until it reached the peak of Da Luo Jin Xian. You Chui laughed heartily and stretched out his hand. The house that had absorbed the merit slowly shrank in size, becoming palm-sized before falling into his hands. He then put it away. Next, he ordered everyone to start building houses. From then on, humanity completely abandoned their nomadic lifestyle and began to have fixed residences.
As for Xī Yī, after bidding farewell to Tōng Tiān, she continued to observe the lives of various tribes and slowly discovered that some insects in the vast wilderness were poisonous. When humans were bitten by these insects, they often lost their lives as a result. If Tōng Tiān had known this, he would have definitely shouted "I knew it!" because he was stung by a bee on his throat, although bees are not particularly venomous, but he still lost his life due to it.
At this, the Hempen people had no solution, and later, the Fire Drill people drilled wood to make fire, and humans began to use torches to drive away these insects, which was still effective, and the mortality rate of humans dropped significantly. However, many people were still harmed by this. The Hempen people saw this and began to think carefully about a solution. Later, the Nesting people built houses, and humans began to live in them, which reduced the harm caused by insects. However, humans had to go out to find food, and when they went out, without the shelter of houses, many people still lost their lives. Moreover, the Hempen people slowly discovered that although humans were no longer afraid of the cold after having fire and houses, they were still helpless when going out, and often people could not withstand the cold and fainted. Thus, facing the invasion of nature, humans were still helpless, and the Hempen people fell into deep thought.
One day, Xiuyi accidentally discovered that a wild beast was stung by a poisonous insect, but nothing happened. Seeing this, Xiuyi's eyes lit up - could it be that the beast wasn't afraid of the highly toxic insect? Moreover, the beast didn't seem to fear the severe cold either, which made her think she might have found a solution. But humans aren't beasts, so how could they also become fearless of insects and cold like the beast? Xiuyi thought for a long time but couldn't come up with any good results.
Helpless, the Xun Yi clan could only go to ask for guidance from Tong Tian. Upon arriving at Tong Tian's location, the Xun Yi clan asked: "Teacher, how can humans also be like wild beasts and not fear insect bites, and not have to fear the invasion of severe cold in the wilderness?"
Tongtian slowly opened his eyes, looked at Xunyishi, and said to her: "You see me with ordinary people, what's the difference." Xunyishi listened, looked at Tongtian with some confusion, but still didn't find anything, and could only say: "Master, the disciple is dull, can't see any difference between Master and ordinary people." Tongtian heard this, and said to her again: "The Great Way has no boundaries, it allows me to see the essence of things clearly, that is, the inner truth of things. But if you can't even see the outer appearance of things, how can you talk about seeing their essence?" Xunyishi listened to Tongtian's words, was stunned for a moment, thought carefully about Tongtian's words, then looked at Tongtian again, observing him carefully, and muttered to herself: "Outer appearance, outer appearance..."
Suddenly, Xī Yī's family stood up abruptly, with an excited expression, and then knelt down on the ground, saying: "Master, the disciple understands, the disciple will go try it now." After finishing speaking, he immediately left. Tōng Tiān watched as Xī Yī's family disappeared into the distance, a faint smile appearing on his face, and then continued to cultivate.
The Huayi tribe returned to their village, and immediately found some beasts that had been killed by humans. They had the skin peeled off, dried over a fire, and then wrapped it around their bodies. The warmth was extreme, and the Huayi tribe was overjoyed. They said to the crowd: "With this method, our tribe will no longer have to fear the cold and the harassment of poisonous insects when searching for food or doing other things in the wilderness." As soon as they finished speaking, the sky suddenly changed, and countless merits descended from the ninth heaven, all falling on the Huayi tribe's body and the animal skin wrapped around them. After being cleansed by the merits, their cultivation immediately reached the peak of the Great Luo Golden Immortal realm. The Huayi tribe smiled slightly, then had the crowd spread the use of clothing. From then on, humans were no longer completely naked, and they began to have clothing that not only kept warm but also reduced the harm from fierce beasts and insects.
On the edge of the gathering place of the human tribe, there was a great mountain. Tongtian was currently cultivating here, and after obtaining merit from creating clothes with the help of the Xunyi clan, he slowly opened his eyes and muttered to himself: "The three ancestors of the human tribe have now arrived, and the human tribe has also entered a stage of rapid development. It won't be long before I should come here to establish the teachings for humanity. From then on, the human tribe will have passed through its most difficult period. It seems that I need to plan carefully." Then, Tongtian calculated with his fingers and found that it was still 300 years short of the 500 years he had promised to take care of the human tribe with Houtu. However, Tongtian was extremely pleased about this and, after a brief consideration, continued to cultivate once again.
The place where Tongtian is located is not far from the place where Houtu cultivates. In Suiren, Youchao, and Ziyi, three people created fire, houses, and clothes for the human tribe. Houtu was overjoyed, but she also had some doubts in her heart, thinking that it was too easy for humans to obtain such great merit just by creating these simple things. However, she had always been fond of humans, so when they obtained merit, she was naturally happy as well. After calculating again, she gained nothing and didn't bother to think about it anymore.
From then on, the human race, under the leadership of Suirenshi, Youchaoshi and Xīyīshì, began to develop rapidly, with a sharp increase in population. As the population grew, humans gradually began to move out of their original tribes and expand into the vast inland areas of Honghuang.
