Chapter Twenty-One: The New Bride
Perhaps it was the unusual look in my eyes, or perhaps this man's overly sensitive heart, but as he approached me, he suddenly seemed to remember something and hastily covered the birthmark on his face with his hand again.
"It's just a birthmark, no need to cover it up." I said nonchalantly.
"Aren't you... afraid?" The man's eyes shone with a surprised light, his voice slightly trembling as he asked.
"Hiss, birthmark, what's scary about it?"
"He said this is... a birthmark?" The man looked at me with doubt.
"Yes, haven't you heard of birthmarks? They're what your mom had when she was pregnant with you... Hmm, it's like a distinguishing mark that sets you apart from others, something unique to yourself that others can't have."
"But everyone says it's the result of being cursed by a demon, and they all laugh at me because of it." A deep sadness flowed out from the man's eyes.
But this sorrowful sentiment made my heart tremble, just like how I've never been praised for being beautiful since birth, and my birthmark is ordinary. So I feel that an invisible string in my heart was struck by his words and the sorrow in his eyes. A sour feeling flowed out from the depths of my heart like a mountain spring gurgling out.
"What a devilish curse! It's really funny, you can see they are ignorant and uncultured. This birthmark is yours alone, you must cherish it well, it's a gift from heaven." I comforted him.
"Really?" The man's eyes sparkled immediately. "Butterfly girl, I'm so glad you think that of me!"
"Nandou! Nandou!" Just then, a clear cry suddenly rang out, and with the sound echoing in the air, a middle-aged woman wearing a silver-gray cloak slowly descended from the pink sky, surrounded by a group of girls dressed in colorful clothing.
"Ah, Aunt!" The man called Nandou suddenly took a step back and blocked me.
"Look at you, just married yesterday and already doting on her today!" The woman's face showed a faint layer of frostiness, and her tone also revealed obvious discontent.
"Not...I..." Nan Dou muttered to himself, wanting to make excuses, but only stammered and didn't say anything.
"Alright, nothing more needs to be said, it's getting cool outside, you'd better go back home with your good wife."
The woman finished speaking, and a burst of snickering laughter erupted around us. The women following her all covered their mouths, giggling as they looked at the two of us.
Nan Dou turned around and looked at me with difficulty, I stood there like a wooden chicken.
Who is his wife? It seems to be me. But when did I marry such a man, just now I met a big handsome guy for the first time in my life, he was so gentle to me, and I didn't have time to savor it carefully, how could I end up here, how could I become the so-called wife of Nandou?
"Miss Butterfly, listen to your aunt's words, let's go inside." Nan Dou took my arm and winked at me with a hint of meaning.
"Who's your wife?" I didn't even have time to consider the meaning of his winking eyes, I struggled free from his arm and the sympathy I had for him just now was gone. "Don't get me wrong, I'm not some butterfly girl, nor am I your wife! I'm Su Xiao Mei, the born unlucky Su Xiao Mei!"
"What's the matter with you?" The woman frowned, a look of displeasure on her well-maintained face. "Nan Dou, you'd better discipline your wife properly. Since she's married into our Sima family, she can't be without manners!"
"Auntie, I'm not your niece-in-law! You've really got it wrong, what era are you living in? It must be a mistake! Wasn't I found by you guys at the bottom of a cliff? Or did your family's niece-in-law just recover from a serious illness and is on her last breath? Or..."
I used up all the plot devices I could think of, and before I was even finished, this woman interrupted me.
"Alright! You ill-mannered thing! Nandou, drag her into the house for me. If she dares to speak nonsense again, family law will be waiting!"
The woman had an uncontrollably angry look, I was really surprised. I just wanted to explain something, but it seemed like I had offended her. It's really a feudal society where the mother-in-law bullies the daughter-in-law. However, this family seems quite well-off, although the male lead has two birthmarks on his face that are quite off-putting. But for me, a 27-year-old unmarried ordinary company employee, it's like catching a golden turtle son-in-law.
