Chapter 2: Robbers on the Road
A wave of drowsiness surged up to his head, Liu Yi lay on the table, and his two eyelids were fighting non-stop. Suddenly, math teacher Fan Yi walked in with a stack of papers "Classmates, we're going to have a test this period". The response was naturally a chorus of complaints, but despite the complaints, they couldn't escape their fate of doing the test papers.
Subconsciously, Liu Yi woke up from a cold war and thought to himself, "Isn't this going to be a dead end again? Am I going to get 0 points again?" He looked at Zhao Tong and found him staring at him with a sullen face. Unable to hold back, he blurted out, "Damn it, you're not good at it either, what are you being so smug about!"
Zhao Tong smiled slyly and said "I doubt it." As he spoke, he pulled out an answer sheet from the drawer "With this, isn't it easy, huh?"
"Wow, where did you get it from?" Liu Yi's eyes lit up. Zhao Tong whispered "I stole it from the teacher's office last night, hehe, isn't it awesome?" Liu Yi nodded in admiration, speechless at this guy's sneaky behavior.
However, the excitement stopped there. After getting the papers, the two of them were stunned to find that the answers didn't match at all. The answers had 10 multiple-choice questions, but the paper had 12, and the number of big questions was also different. Both of them were so depressed that they couldn't bear it.
This road is not accessible, can only detour. Liu Yi then stared at Ma Xiao Jie in front of him. Ma Xiao Jie and Liu Yi were elementary school classmates, but their grades were just barely average. Wearing glasses, Liu Yi started stretching his neck to stare at Ma Xiao Jie's paper, "Xiao Jie, the first question is B, hurry up and write it!" The two then began to carefully copy.
"Liu Yi, why is your neck stretched out so long? Are you a turtle?" Fan Yi said as she walked over. Liu Yi hastily explained, "Ah, teacher, I slept on my neck wrong last night and it's killing me."
Fan Yi hummed, took a chair and sat down beside Zhao Tong and Liu Yi. This made the two people anxious and worried. They were doomed. Liu Yi could only recall the "Meng Ti Shen Gui" (a mnemonic device) and silently recited "Three long one short choose A, three short one long choose B......". These math problems were all numbers, what to do? The two of them struggled on, randomly guessing the multiple-choice questions, and then started dozing off at their desks.
Fan Yi looked at the two people lying on the table, fell into deep thought. If this continues, the future of both will be ruined. (Fan Yi graduated from Beihai Normal University less than two years ago and was still quite responsible for her students.) Fan Yi felt that since they were her own students, she should fulfill her responsibility as a teacher. She patted Liu Ye's shoulder and woke him up: "Don't sleep! How can you sleep during the exam?"
Liu Yi shrugged and frankly said "What can I do, Teacher Fan? I don't know how to do these questions."
"Alright, starting from today, you two come to my office after school every day, and I'll give you both individual tutoring." Liu Yi and Zhao Tong exchanged a glance, furrowed their brows, and responded in unison. As dusk approached, accompanied by the fading red glow of sunset, groups of people walked out of the campus, leaving behind Liu Yi and Zhao Tong, who sat in the classroom with gloomy faces, pondering over the contents of their make-up classes.
"Let's go, we should get started." Fan Yina's slender figure appeared at the classroom door.
Two people hastily picked up their books and followed Fan Yi to the math group. Zhao Tong poked Liu Yi and whispered, "You think we'll be studying until how late tonight? Won't we be unable to go back?" Liu Yi glanced at Zhao Tong sideways, "Just endure it, what other good method do you have?" Zhao Tong stiffly smiled, "Then let's just endure."
As soon as they entered the math department office, Fan Yi instructed them to move a stool and sit on either side of her. "Let's start with the basics, functions, what is a function..."
In the blink of an eye, the sky had also turned pitch black. In the campus, only the office of the math department was still lit up. Fan Yi glanced at the clock on the wall "Let's stop here for tonight, and continue tomorrow". He handed two pages of questions to Zhao Tong and Liu Yi respectively "These questions are specially given to you two, they are related to what we discussed today, go back and do them well, and hand them in to me tomorrow." The two nodded and acknowledged.
As soon as they went out, it was already very late. The dark night color enveloped every corner, and Fan Yi's face also showed a tired look. "You guys hurry back, it's not early anymore, your family should be waiting anxiously too," Zhao Tong said to Liu Yi and Fan Yi before disappearing into the vast night with a declaration of "see you tomorrow". Only Fan Yi and Liu Yi were left behind.
Just as Fan Yi was about to speak and ask Liu Yi to hurry home, Liu Yi said "Let me send you back home, teacher." This brought a hint of warmth to Fan Yi's heart.
"It's okay, I'll go back by myself." Fan Yi smiled and said to Liu Yi.
"It's so late, Teacher, it's not safe for you to go back by yourself. What if there are robbers or something? It's too dangerous." Liu Yi gazed at Fan Yi with utmost sincerity, his bright eyes shining like embers in the dark night.
Fan Yi couldn't outdo Liu Yi and had no choice but to let him send her back. The two of them pushed the cart, slowly moving forward under the dim streetlights.
Just then, two figures suddenly darted out from the small path beside them, one fat and one thin. "This road was opened by me, this tree was planted by me. If you want to pass through this road, leave your toll money behind! Take out all the valuable things on your body!"
Fan Yi was clearly startled by the two bandits, her body involuntarily trembling as she fell backward. Liu Yi quickly grasped and steadied the frightened Fan Yi, shielding her behind him as he glared at the two robbers. The dimly lit street was eerily quiet at this moment, with only these few people present. Fan Yi thought to herself, "When you call out for help from heaven, no one responds; when you cry out for help from earth, no one answers. What should I do now?"
But unexpectedly, Liu Yi rushed towards the two thugs and shouted "Who are you guys hanging out with? Don't you know that this area is under my protection?" The two thugs were taken aback, looked at each other, and laughed wickedly "Hahaha, I'm dying of laughter! You're just a kid who hasn't even grown all his hair yet, what kind of god are you pretending to be? Hurry up and hand over the money to me!"
Liu Yi's eyebrows slightly furrowed, and he flexed his fingers, making a cracking sound.
Fat Maozi saw that Liu Yi had no intention of taking the money, so he directly decided to take action. "You stinky brat, you don't want to take the money? Then obediently accept your death!" He said, and then pounced on him with both fists clenched.
Liu Yi is a nobody, spending his days idling around on the streets, getting into fights is just a trivial matter for him. He lifted his leg and kicked the fat thief's belly with one swift motion, directly sending the fat thief crashing to the ground.
The thin thief panicked and quickly pulled out a spring knife from his pocket, threatening Liu Yi "You... you let him go, or else I'll stab you to death, did you hear me?!" Liu Yi looked at him with disdain "Hmph, if you have the guts, come on! I'm just afraid you won't come!" The thin man charged forward, and Liu Yi dodged to the side, grabbing the thin thief's wrist with his left hand and punching with his right, aiming straight for the thin thief's face. The knife in the thin thief's hand slashed wildly, cutting open Liu Yi's forearm, but the next moment, he had no strength to continue, as Liu Yi's right knee landed squarely on the thin thief's forehead, sending him tumbling to the ground.
At this time, the fat thief came back to his senses and seeing that things were not going well, he pulled the thin thief and fled in a hurry. Liu Yi was about to run over to chase them when Fan Yi held him back: "Forget it, don't chase them."
Liu Yi watched the two fleeing figures, gritted his teeth in anger, spat on the ground and cursed, "Next time I see you two, I'll make sure to beat you to death."
Fan Yi gazed at Liu Yi with a warm and grateful heart, after a while, she blurted out "Thank you, Liu Yi."
Liu Yi turned his head and put on a pure face "Hehe, Teacher Fan, what are you thanking me for? This is what I should do!"
Walked Fang Yi down to the lobby, Fang Yi turned around and smiled, "Want to go up and sit for a bit?" "It's late, I should head back, next time." Liu Yi smiled foolishly.
He saw her off as she walked into the building, then Liu Yi rode his bow and flew back home. As soon as he entered the door, he saw his mother sitting on the sofa, scolding him "Where did you run to again? Look at your watch, what time is it?" Liu Yi smiled mischievously "We're already in our third year of high school, and our math teacher gave me and Zhao Tong extra tutoring, didn't we just finish?"
Before his mother could ask again, Liu Yi flashed into his own room. Soon he entered dreamland...
