Chapter 1: The Brief Biography of Wu Xin
A mountain is not great because of its height, but becomes famous if there's a fairy; water is not spiritual because of its depth, but becomes divine if there's a dragon. This saying has truly penetrated the principles of Zen and revealed the secrets of heaven, enough to shock and awaken the countless foolish people in the mundane world. Just like this Xiangyin city, which is famous both at home and abroad, it is an extremely good illustration of this saying.
Liyang City is actually a county-level city, located on the border of Hunan and Jiangxi provinces. The terrain inside is mostly mountainous, with some fertile land, lakes and rivers, which makes it look crisscrossed and scattered all over. This landscape of clear mountains and water has a unique charm similar to that of Jiangnan. However, although its mountains are elegant and beautiful, they do not have the majestic scenery of Mount Tai or Mount Hua; although its waters are clear and winding, they are not as comfortable and elegant as those of the Liujiang River in Fuzhou; its lakes are not as big as Dongting Lake or West Lake, and its fields are not as fertile as those in Northeast China or North China. But it stands out among many places in Jiangnan because of a river.
This river is called Liu Yin River, with nine bends and turns, originating from afar and flowing for a long distance, passing through several counties before finally emptying into the Xiang River. Although the Xiang River flows for hundreds of miles along its course, with mountains and water reflecting each other's beauty, it lacks the grandeur of the Yangtze River, the unbridled spirit of the Yellow River, the gentle elegance of the Liao River, or the endless length of the Hai River. However, on the banks of the Xiang River, there emerged a person who stood out among his contemporaries, with an aura that others could not match, who boldly forged ahead in a chaotic world to create a new future, igniting passion in people's hearts and shattering the old world full of flaws, creating a magnificent achievement that would last for centuries. As a result, the Xiang River became famous, followed by the Liu Yin River, and subsequently, the city of Liu Yin also benefited from this fame. This logic is quite similar to human emotions and worldly affairs, and it also echoes an old saying: "When one person achieves success, even chickens and dogs rise to heaven."
Xiangyin City is divided into several towns based on its mountain and river geography. One town near the Hunan-Jiangxi border is called Xugou Town.
Xugou Town is not big, with only tens of thousands of households and eight villages. The town's industry is not developed, and the land is too small, making it difficult to make a living by relying on the few acres of thin land. To maintain their livelihood, almost every household in the local village produces fireworks, earning some hard-earned money. Also because of this, the locals attach great importance to education, hoping that future generations can use this to pull themselves out of this "poor and remote" situation. As a result, there are primary schools in every village, and the town has also set up a junior high school, which is sufficient for such a small town with a relatively small population.
The village on the southeastern side of Xugou Town is called Hanshao Village.
In the village of Cold Crow, there is a well that has been named "Cold Water Well" because its water temperature remains extremely low even in summer, making it sweet and refreshing. The villagers find this well very convenient for their daily needs. In addition to its coolness, the well's water also has another unique property: during winter, it becomes warm and hot, which is ideal for washing and other uses. As a result, it serves as the primary source of living water for the entire village, earning great respect from the villagers.
Next to the well flows a large river, alongside which stands an enormous camphor tree that requires three adults holding hands to encircle its trunk. The branches stretch out in all directions, resembling a canopy. On this tree, crows build their nests and often make loud, shrill cries, fitting perfectly with the village's name "Cold Crow". Although villagers generally dislike crows, they treat those living on the ancient camphor tree with reverence, as if they were divine messengers.
The reason for this is simple: in rural areas, wherever there are large trees or cold springs, there must be spirits. The crows naturally assume the role of these spirits' envoys. But that's a side story, and we won't go into it further.
It is said that from an unknown time, a small temple appeared beside the tree, called Longwang Temple. The temple was very small, but incense and candles were always burning. An old man in his nineties lived inside, who was the temple keeper. Strangely, no one in the village could tell his origin, they just called him Old Man. It is said that drawing lots for divination here was very effective. Over time, both the temple and the old temple keeper became famous.
The story begins from the Dragon King Temple beside the ancient camphor tree near the Cold Water Well in Hanshya Village.
On this day at dawn, in the deep autumn season, with heavy fog, a tired and worried woman rushed to the temple.
The woman's forehead was beaded with water droplets, it was unclear whether they were dew or sweat. She was panting, her face flushed red as she carried a five or six year old child in and walked inside.
"Ah Bo! Save this child! He's had a high fever all night, and even well water can't bring down the temperature!" The woman begged the old man as soon as she saw him, her expression extremely anxious.
Abe Jian, a widow in the village, comforted her: "Big sister, don't panic, I'll calculate it first!" After speaking, she took out a set of wooden divination tools and began to manipulate them, but her eyes were fixed on the little boy.
The woman saw A Bo's deep and bright eyes, felt strange, thought it was magical, and suddenly felt a sense of reverence, and also felt a little more at ease.
It's strange to say, when Old Man was fiddling with the wooden divination blocks and staring at the little boy, the little boy who seemed to be sleeping but had a red face suddenly opened his eyes and looked at Old Man. His two eyes slowly shone with a hint of consciousness and he even gave Old Man a slight smile.
Abu's heart skipped a beat as he saw the child, whose forehead was broad and flat, head square-shaped, with eyes that shone with a hint of ethereal detachment. He smiled and said: "Elder sister! This child is not in any danger, he'll be fine in two days!"
The elder sister-in-law was overjoyed and tearfully said: "Thank you so much! Uncle!"
"But! However, there's a bit of trouble!" Ah Bo said in a low and serious tone: "I need to keep him staying in the temple for three days, to worship the Dragon King as his godfather! By then, with this kind of ability to test the mountain, his illness will naturally be cured. It's just that every year on the Dragon Boat Festival, he must pay respects to the Dragon King, this godfather, to fulfill his filial duty."
"Nothing to it! Nothing at all! It's only right!"
This child is Wu Xin!
Wu Xin was in good spirits after being rescued by Uncle Ah, and from then on, he had no disasters or illnesses, and was much healthier than children of the same age. After entering school, he was exceptionally intelligent, able to make connections between things, and every year he was the top student in his school, and with excellent results, he smoothly passed the entrance exam for Xugou Middle School in the town.
The villagers all envied Wu's mother for having a good son, thinking that he would surely make a great career and have unlimited prospects in the future. Also seeing that the man of the house had passed away early, the widowed mother and her child were indeed pitiful, so they were also willing to offer some help. Wu's mother was also an open-minded and generous person, although poor but not stingy, and could get along harmoniously with the neighbors.
Wu Xin's achievements are outstanding, but there are also several other unusual aspects about him.
He was tall and handsome, with a sturdy build, but he didn't like sports. He ignored all kinds of physical activities at school and only liked to read quietly. People called him "bookworm", which he also ignored, only giving a faint smile. However, he had some brute strength, taking care of all the heavy chores at home by himself.
Secondly, he was a man of few words, but when he spoke, his words were often surprising and humorous. On one occasion, while playing with some friends, they came across a family digging a well in front of their house. Wu Xing casually remarked, "This would be a great place for a tomb!" The villagers were furious, thinking that Wu Xing was cursing them to die in the well. They glared at him angrily, but eventually let it go when they realized he was just being foolish. From then on, his friends kept their distance from him, and only one person remained close to him, a man named Hu Bin.
Thirdly, he is humble and prudent in his words, never wanting to be a cadre in the class. I remember once, the whole class voted for him to be the study committee member, but he refused to take it, saying he didn't like "being an official". This wasn't arrogance, whenever someone asked him about academic matters, he would always explain thoroughly until they understood. His classmates also came to understand him, although they thought he was a bit silly, they still respected him in their hearts.
Fourth, he also had a stupid habit, which was that he would only go to school after eating breakfast every day. He walked slowly and was often late for class, with hardly any days without being tardy. His mother and teachers were at their wit's end, both angry and amused. In the winter, Wu Xin usually arrived just as the morning reading session ended. At this time, the teachers would be sitting on benches in the playground, soaking up the sun, coincidentally welcoming Wu Xin's slow arrival. The teachers couldn't help but laugh and say: "Are you afraid of stepping on ants?" Wu Xin would smile shyly and continue to saunter into the classroom, leaving everyone exasperated. If he hadn't always been first in every subject every year, perhaps no one would have tolerated him.
With these few unusual skills, Wu Xin was famous throughout the town since he was a child. However, he was different from other boys, with a quiet personality, although he had a kind face and eyes, he rarely had close friends. From elementary school to junior high school, he only made one friend, but it was a very good friend, named Hu Bin.
