Chapter 28: The Pregnancy Was Exposed
After dinner, everyone was active in the farm, preparing to return to D city from the highway later. I stood beside the pomelo orchard of the farm, watching the free-range chickens they raised, feeling a sense of tranquility.
Su Haicheng appeared beside me at this moment. I turned around and looked at him, smiling at him. He said softly, "I didn't think you'd do that."
"I didn't think of it either, but those things from when we were kids can also help you out."
"Your grandfather must be an old man with stories."
"Hmm. But he died when I was 13 years old. If he were still alive, maybe he could have helped us."
"Never mind, from the beginning I decided to do it myself. I went to find Ah Tian just to ask for his help in getting some equipment. Who knew he would insist on following me? He followed even though he's just one person and wouldn't have died if he got lost in that forest. Later we met you guys."
"Isn't it better for everyone to be together?" I said, and now I'm afraid he'll tell us that this matter has nothing to do with us, and then drive my mom away. Looking at his expression, he's willing to go back with us this time, but that doesn't mean he'll let go.
He just smiled, actually I don't know what he means now either.
After a day and night of driving, we returned to D City. The car was rented by the boss, while the one Su Haicheng bought was still hidden in the woods. Although I missed that car very much, I didn't dare say it out loud. At that time, we couldn't go back for the car. We could only pray silently that when we went again next time, the car would still be hidden there.
But this idea only existed for half a day. Because when our car returned to the school, the boss's mobile phone rang. He looked at the caller ID and muttered: "I asked for a seven-day leave, why did the Dean of Studies call me?"
He answered the phone: "Hello, Director." The boss looked at me and replied, "Right! Good!"
He hung up the phone and said nervously: "There are police at school, they are looking for Si Yatou. They didn't say why, just that they want to take him away."
My heart sank all of a sudden, we just got back. And I'm sure, there's nothing that would make the police come to my door.
Kakaxi suddenly shouted: "Sister, sister, you'd better run away quickly."
A Tian yawned and said, "What's the hurry? Hai Cheng's mom is the deputy director of the Public Security Bureau. Can't she handle this little thing? Aren't you carrying Hai Cheng's child? His mom won't let you down?"
Kakaxi knew the inside story, our boss stared at me with wide eyes, hardly believing: "You're pregnant and you still want to go with us?"
"I didn't mean it!" I hastily explained, but now it seems like the more I explain, the more inappropriate it becomes.
Su Haicheng also said: "The police can find the school, you have no way to hide. April 1st, now call my mom and tell her that the police are coming to the school to take you away, just hang up after saying that." The driver is now Ah Tian, he can talk to me like this for a few more sentences, otherwise with his personality, he rarely speaks.
"But what if your mom doesn't care about me? Will I go to jail or something? Why are they looking for me?"
"The car hidden in the woods with your name on it, I think they've found it. Don't worry, I promise, my mom will help you."
"What if? Your mom didn't like me from the start, what if she doesn't help me..." I panicked, almost to the point of tears. I never thought things would turn out this way. But even if time were to rewind, I'd probably still end up in this situation."
"Then I'll go rescue you, I'll rush in and take you out, okay?"
"Alright, then you two elope. I'll help design the route for you. With my IQ, I guarantee a safe journey."
He slapped him on the back of his head: "When two people are talking about their feelings, it's your turn to interrupt?"
Su Haicheng nodded at me, slightly curled up the corner of his mouth, and gave me a reassuring phone call: "Make the call. We're almost at the school gate."
I held the phone and dialed back the number that Su's mother had called before. The call was answered quickly, but the voice on the other end sounded obviously impatient.
"Didn't I tell you we don't need to be in touch?"
"Auntie," I stammered: "Auntie, there are police coming to school to take me away. I..."
The words hadn't been spoken yet, when Su Haicheng took my phone away like last time and hung up. "This kind of thing, the more you talk about it, the more likely it is to make my mom suspicious. Just like this, she'll go investigate herself." He handed the phone back to me.
The car stopped in front of the school gate. Ah Tian said: "Girl, get off the bus, we won't go in. If Haicheng sees us, it's not good."
"Ah." I responded and opened the car door, my heart racing wildly, my legs feeling a bit weak. I had always been a well-behaved kid and never thought that one day the police would come looking for me.
I walked alone towards the school, and I could already see the police car in front of the office building over there.
The phone in my hand rang, I looked at the incoming call display, there was no name, but I remembered the number, it was Su Haicheng's phone. I quickly answered it.
"Hey!"
"Don't be afraid, I won't let you suffer. If it's at night and my mom doesn't go to help you, I'll sneak out in the dark to rescue you. Like... a dead person, like a ghost, I'll abduct you from them."
I held the phone, speechless for a moment. How to say it, is this what Su Haicheng told me as sweet words? He's not good at speaking, and he can say such things, which is already rare enough.
He didn't say anything else, and I didn't know what to say either, but he still refused to put down his phone. It wasn't until the police walked up to me and asked, "Are you Chen Siyi?"
"Yes, I am." I put down the phone and hung up the call.
"Come with us for a walk. We need to understand some things."
"Good."
Do you know how sad it is to leave school in a police car and be stared at by a group of classmates? I'm experiencing this feeling right now. The car drove forward, and the route was unfamiliar to me. It wasn't until halfway through that the policeman sitting in the passenger seat received a phone call. I couldn't hear what the specific content of the call was, but as he spoke on the phone, he turned his head towards me, and it seemed like it had something to do with me.
Then they whispered something in low voices, and I could only vaguely hear: "City A... who knows what kind of backing she has..."
The car just got on the highway, and when it was almost dark, we arrived at the police station in A city. I was handed over to the police here, and then a female police officer took me upstairs. She also said to me: "Don't worry, our deputy director is waiting for you upstairs."
After entering the office with the deputy director's nameplate, the female police officer immediately left. In this solemn and tidy office, there was only one person, Su Mama. She wore a neat police uniform, standing in front of the window, looking at the outside scenery, holding her mobile phone, and said with a sob: "My son is dead! He's dead! Do you understand? How can I be calm? Can you bring my son back? I only have one son! Now, Chen Si has Hai Cheng's child in her belly, she hasn't done anything illegal, how can you treat her like this, and even more so, Hai Cheng's posthumous child?! You've already made me lose my only son, are you going to make me lose my only grandson too?"
I just, Su's mom is really strong-willed, but she also loves Su Haicheng deeply. Because of her words, my eyes were also reddening. I really wanted to tell her that Su Haicheng was back, but I also knew that I couldn't say it out loud.
It was almost eight o'clock when we returned to the military compound. The living room lights were on, and the old man was sitting on a traditional Chinese wooden sofa, talking on his mobile phone. Although I couldn't hear what he was saying, it seemed like he was speaking with the leader of Su Haicheng. A young soldier nearby saw us return and hastily came over to greet us, lowering his voice to say: "You're back. You should also persuade General Zhang, it's already eight o'clock and he still hasn't eaten." His anxious expression showed that taking care of General Zhang was his responsibility.
