Chapter 6: The Mysterious Crow of the Black Turtle
Chen Shunzhen only then saw the other person's appearance clearly. This face was not considered beautiful in those years, lacking some roundness and luster, but it was crystal clear and elegant, with a unique and refined temperament. The hair was fine and smooth, with a slightly yellowish tint at the temples, unlike the traditional black and shiny hair. The eyebrows were also light in color, like a waterfall or smoke, and the nose bridge was slender. Placed on this delicate face, it made people applaud and exclaim. When speaking, her eyebrows seemed to be raised, her lip corners slightly upturned, and her dimples smiled shallowly. Her words were neither humble nor arrogant, knowledgeable and reasonable, and she was quite refined and likable.
"As you are Mrs. Tang's esteemed niece, there is no need to be polite," Chen Shunzhen also chuckled, "Come on, get in the car quickly, the accommodations have all been arranged properly, go take a look and see if anything has been missed."
As soon as the car started, driver Xu Genbao mentioned a scene he saw at the station: "It looks like someone else has been caught. Several of our people were escorting a man, I don't know who it was."
Dong Zhiyu perked up her ears, she also wanted to figure out the identity of this person. What she least hoped for was that he was a revolutionary comrade from Anping, but if it were true, perhaps she could obtain some information about the underground party members in Xuanwu District, or even get in touch with them.
"Either it's from the Anping side or the Yupei side, who else could it be?" She then turned to Dong Zhiyu and patted her shoulder, "You weren't scared, were you?"
"It's all right, it's all right. In Shanghai, you often see people being caught too. I really can't understand what these people are doing, Mr. Wang pointed out the peaceful way for the citizens, but they don't follow it, instead they want to be anti-Japanese heroes, dragging the ordinary people to bleed and suffer."
"Does everyone really understand this in their heart? The common people suffer and bleed, they are heroes, yet they scold us as traitors, not knowing the times!"
Dong Zhiyu nodded in response, but his heart was filled with an unbearable sense of sadness. He looked out the window at the city that had endured hardships and humiliation, its residents' buildings still flying faded flags that seemed to be the original Xuanwu Party's blue sky and white sun flag at first glance. But upon closer inspection, a yellow ribbon had been added below, with the slogan "Peaceful Anti-Communist National Reconstruction" printed on it. The lines of poetry "The stone city has changed masters several times, but the Huai River still flows as it did in the Qin dynasty" suddenly came to mind, and he couldn't help but feel a pang of emotion. Every time the city had changed hands, which one was like this, with his people being oppressed and humiliated?
The sedan chair went all the way to the south end of Xuanwu Lake, and when it arrived at the east side of Baota Street, Chen Shunzhen pointed in the direction of Jiming Temple with her hand: "Look, the National Government is over there, at Jiming Temple, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is also there."
Dong Zhiyu looked in the direction her finger was pointing, she knew that the puppet government had occupied the original place of Dai Jitao's examination institute, what a pity for this location with mountains and rivers.
Chen Shunzhen saw that she was just looking around and thought it was a girl who felt fresh, and continued: "Your residence is not far from here in the south, you can walk there."
"That's great, I was thinking of buying a bike earlier." Dong Zhiyu smiled slyly.
"It's a girl's home and she's a young lady, we can't use that thing," Chen Shunzhen shook her head straight, "turning around will get you there, it's right next to Central University."
"Thank you, Mrs. Zhu, for going to so much trouble."
The sedan stopped at Chengxian Street, next to a narrow alley called Youxin Lane, which was too narrow for the car to enter.
"Old Xu, you go with Miss Dong to take a look and help tidy up, see if there's anything else needed," Chen Shunzhen said, "Here are the keys," she took out a bunch of keys from her handbag and handed them to Xu Genbao, "Oh, and don't forget the food we brought back from the East Asia restaurant earlier, help Miss Dong carry it up together."
"Yes, ma'am."
Dong Zhiyu thanked Chen Shunzhen and followed Xu Genbao into the Youxin Workshop. This was a great location, quiet in the midst of noise. Before long, they arrived at a two-story small building. Although it was called two stories, the second floor was actually an attic with an independent staircase outside. After Xu Genbao opened the door, Dong Zhiyu looked around and found that this place seemed to have been renovated recently. The bathroom looked new, and the small kitchen had a coal stove, pots, and pans. The bedroom was a bit small, but the bed and bedding were all tidy and appeared to be newly purchased.
After putting away the luggage, Dong Zhiyu didn't delay and hurriedly sent Xu Genbao downstairs. They arrived at the car and exchanged pleasantries with Chen Shunzhen again before returning. As they waited for the car to start, Chen Shunzhen played with the chicken blood stone bangle on her wrist, "Is she really a local?"
"Isn't it?" Xu Genbao nodded his head like a garlic press.
"What did you tell him?" Chen Shunzhen seemed nonchalant, but her eyes held a hint of suspicion.
"Say it..." Xu Genbao scratched his head, this evening he seemed to have said a lot of words with the young lady, but when he thought back, it was all unclear. "She said she hadn't been back for several years, what a strange thing to think about."
Chen Shunzhen nodded.
